Duke Street Prison

On 6 March 1989, two Class 303 commuter trains crashed on the Springburn branch of the North Clyde Line, just east of Bellgrove station in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland. Driver Mr. Hugh Kennan, aged 62 of Maryhill, and passenger Mr. Robert McCaffrey, aged 58, a retired rail worker from Scotstoun, died in the crash and 53 people were injured.The accident was of a type known as "ding-ding, and away". It was caused primarily by a signal passed at danger (SPAD) in conjunction with the single-lead junction track layout, where two lines converged into one just beyond the platform end and then diverged again – a layout which is simpler to maintain but is vulnerable in the event of a SPAD. This type of junction has been implicated in other accidents, notably to the south-east of Glasgow in the Newton rail accident just a couple of years later. Both trains were travelling at 40 mph (65 km/h), so the collision speed was 80 mph (130 km/h). The force of the impact was so severe that at least one passenger was thrown out of his seat and completely destroyed one of the "A" frame back-to-back seats. An official report, delivered in May 1990, determined that the Milngavie-to-Springburn train had passed the signal at danger, causing a collision with the Springburn-to-Milngavie service.

Gallowgate is a neighbourhood of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It takes its name from the major thoroughfare through the territory, which is part of the A89 road. Administratively, it is part of the Calton ward of the Glasgow City Council area.

Dennistoun is a mostly residential district in Glasgow, Scotland, located north of the River Clyde and in the city's east end, about 1+1⁄4 miles (2 kilometres) east of the city centre. Since 2017 it has formed the core of a Dennistoun ward under Glasgow City Council, having previously been a component of the East Centre ward. Aside from the smaller Haghill neighbourhood further east, Dennistoun's built environment does not adjoin any others directly, with the M8 motorway dividing it from Royston to the north, while the buildings of Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Wellpark Brewery plus the Glasgow Necropolis cemetery lie to the west, and railway lines form the southern boundary with the Calton/Gallowgate neighbourhoods, and Camlachie (a historic district which is now largely a retail park) on the opposite side.

St Mungo's Academy is a Roman Catholic, co-educational, comprehensive, secondary school located in Gallowgate, Glasgow. The school was founded in 1858 by the Marist Brothers religious order. The debate team at St Mungo's were the first Scottish team to represent the UK at the World Parliamentary Debate Competition, which they won. They were congratulated by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The Bellgrove Hotel is a category B listed building in the Gallowgate area of Glasgow. The hotel became notorious as a homeless hostel due to the poor living conditions it provides after a number of press and media reports and it was prominently mentioned during a debate in the Scottish Parliament on 16 December 2014.

The Bluevale and Whitevale Towers were twin tower block flats situated in the Camlachie district within the East End of Glasgow, Scotland. Officially named 109 Bluevale Street and 51 Whitevale Street, and often nicknamed the Gallowgate Twins or the Camlachie Twin Towers, the two towers were for a time the tallest buildings in Scotland.After originally being condemned in 2011, in early 2016 the demolition of both towers was completed.

Bellgrove Railway Station is in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland, serving the city's Calton, Gallowgate and south Dennistoun neighbourhoods. The station is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east of Glasgow Queen Street, and is managed by ScotRail. The station is an island platform served by trains on the North Clyde Line, and provides an interchange between the lines to Springburn and Edinburgh Waverley. The station is accessed from Bellgrove Street via stairs, and is approximately a mile (2 km) away from Celtic Park.

Whitehill Secondary School (formerly Whitehill Senior Secondary School) is a Scottish non-denominational comprehensive secondary school located in the suburb of Dennistoun in Glasgow. The school is a part of the Whitehill Campus, along with Golfhill Primary School and Westercraigs Nursery. The campus was assembled in 2007, following the closure of the Golfhill Primary building due to structural issues. The school moved into the main building in 2009, with Westercraigs having their own structure.

Duke Street Railway Station is a railway station in Glasgow, Scotland. The station is managed by ScotRail and is served by trains on the North Clyde Line, 1½ miles (2 km) north east of Glasgow Queen Street. It was built as part of the City of Glasgow Union Railway which provided a link across the Clyde (between the Glasgow and Paisley Joint Railway at Shields Junction and the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway at Sighthill Junction). Though goods traffic began using the line in 1875, the station was not opened until 1881 with trains initially running as far as Alexandra Park (as it was then known). An extension to Barnhill followed two years later, but it was not until 1887 that they finally reached Springburn. Electric operation at the station began in 1960 (using the 25 kV A.C overhead system), when the branch from Bellgrove was incorporated into the North Clyde line electrification scheme. Through running to Cumbernauld began in May 2014 - prior to this a change at Springburn was required.
