Redwood Creek (Marin County)

Muir Beach is a census designated place (CDP), unincorporated community, and beach on the Pacific Ocean. The community is located 16.5 miles (26.6 km) northwest of San Francisco in western Marin County, California, United States. Unlike many other entities in the area, it is not named directly in honor of conservationist John Muir; instead, it was named after Muir Woods National Monument to capitalize on the latter's popularity. The population was 304 at the 2020 census. The community itself flanks the northwest side of the beach. Located about 2 miles (3 km) from the entrance to Muir Woods, the beach is about 1,000 feet (300 m) long and 200 feet (61 m) wide, with coarse sand and several large boulders. Redwood Creek empties into the beach. There is a parking lot at the beach, which is accessible via a footbridge. The subdivision of homes was formerly called Bello Beach, and the beach itself was formerly called Big Lagoon after a freshwater lagoon that was located where the parking lot is now. Damage from 20th century dairy farms interfered with the flow of the creek and the lagoon.

Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, or Sōryu-ji (蒼龍寺 Green Dragon Temple) is a Soto Zen practice center located near Muir Beach, California, that practices in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki. In addition to its Zen training program, the center also manages an organic farm and gardens. Founded in 1972 by the San Francisco Zen Center and Zentatsu Richard Baker, the site is located on 115 acres (0.47 km2) in a valley seventeen miles (27 km) north of San Francisco and offers a variety of workshops and classes throughout the year. The land is an inholding of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and has much wildlife within its borders. In addition to meditation retreats, offerings include classes and workshops on the Japanese tea ceremony and gardening. While Green Gulch Farm has a residential monastery and retreat center, guest house, and conference center, it has also become recognized as a place where organic farmers can come to learn the tools of their trade. One of the original architects of the gardens at Green Gulch was the renowned late horticulturist Alan Chadwick—who had introduced the biodynamic farming techniques influenced by Rudolf Steiner on the farm. Chadwick's grave is marked by a stupa on site. Author Fenton Johnson writes that Green Gulch Farm, "...serve[s] as a model for living on the land in the context of a Zen Buddhist practice."

Pirates Cove is an embayment in Marin County, California, United States, between Muir Beach and Tennessee Cove. A trail leads from the terminus of the California Coastal Trail to a small beach area, surrounded by steep hills and coastal scrub.There is also a nude beach called Pirates Cove 5 miles west north west of Pismo Beach and 6.7 miles south south west of Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo, CA

Druid Heights was a bohemian community in Marin County, California, U.S., founded in 1954 by poet Elsa Gidlow, her partner Isabel Quallo, and carpenter Roger Somers. The community was a popular retreat for various countercultural movements and a meeting place for many figures of the San Francisco Renaissance.

Tennessee Cove is an embankment off the Pacific Ocean in Marin County, California. It is named after the S.S. Tennessee, a steamship that ran aground near here on March 6, 1853. All 550 passengers climbed safely onto the beach, and fourteen chests of gold were salvaged before the ship broke up. Remnants of the ship can still be seen during low tide during some winter days on the south end of the beach. The cove is a 1.7-mile (2.7 km) hike from the parking lot near the end of Tennessee Valley Road.

Muir Woods National Monument is a United States National Monument managed by the National Park Service, named after naturalist John Muir. It is located on Mount Tamalpais near the Pacific coast, in southwestern Marin County, California. It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is 12 miles (19 km) north of San Francisco. It protects 554 acres (224 ha), of which 240 acres (97 ha) are old growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests, one of a few such stands remaining in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Tamalpais Valley (Miwok: Támal Pájiṣ) is an unincorporated community in Marin County, California.

Rancho Saucelito (also called "Rancho Sausalito") was a 19,752-acre (79.93 km2) Mexican land grant in present-day Marin County, California, given in 1838 by Governor Juan Alvarado to William A. Richardson. The name means "ranch of the little willow grove". The grant extended from the Pacific Ocean on the west, to Mount Tamalpais to the north, and the Arroyo Corte Madera del Presidio and Richardson Bay on the east; and included present-day Muir Beach, Stinson Beach, Sausalito, Tamalpais Valley, and Homestead Valley.

Gull Rock is a rock formation and a small rocky island in Marin County, in the U.S. state of California. It lies in the Pacific Ocean just offshore of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Centissima Reef is the reef which surrounds Sears Rock west of Rodeo Beach in the Pacific Ocean off Marin County, California. Some early reports refer to Centissima Rock and Sears Rock as separate sub-surface navigation hazards, but present-day nautical charts show Sears Rock as part of the larger Centissima Reef. A 1908 report on San Francisco Bay stated that a survey was then in progress to investigate the cost of removing both Sears Rock and Centissima Reef, along with Mission Bay Rock and Sonoma Rock, near Mission Rock in San Francisco Bay. In 1922, Representative Julius Kahn told a congressional committee that neither Sears Rock nor Centissima posed a navigation hazard as they had been blasted several years previously: "They are not visible, neither of them. ... [Centissima Rock] is practically at 40 feet. It is a little below the channel, a little south of the channel."

Sears Rock (sometimes Sear's Rock) is a small sub-surface rock about 0.7 miles (1.1 km) west of Rodeo Beach in the Pacific Ocean off Marin County, California. It is the highest point of the larger Centissima Reef, a sub-surface navigation hazard east of the Bonita Channel, although some reports refer to the two as separate features. A 1908 report on San Francisco Bay stated that a survey was then in progress to investigate the cost of removing both Sears Rock and Centissima Reef, along with Mission Bay Rock and Sonoma Rock, near Mission Rock in San Francisco Bay. In 1922, Representative Julius Kahn told a congressional committee that neither Sears Rock nor Centissima posed a navigation hazard as they had been blasted several years previously: "They are not visible, neither of them. The Sear's was blasted to a depth of 40 feet some five or six years ago. It is never visible at all. There are some people who think that it ought to be blasted to a depth of 45 feet, but the men who navigate the vessels think 40 feet for the present time a sufficient depth."

The Tennessee Valley is a small, undeveloped part of Marin County, near Mill Valley. Historically home to ranches and threatened with the development of a new city, the valley was incorporated into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972, with additional sections added to the park in 1974. The park contains horse stables, a native-plant nursery, and numerous trails for hiking, biking, and horse riding, including a 1.7-mile, handicap-accessible trail that leads to Tennessee Cove and its beach.
