Salses-le-Château (French pronunciation: [sals lə ʃato] ; Catalan: Salses) or just Salses is a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France. It is located north of the city of Perpignan.

The siege of Salses (1639–1640) was a double siege during the Franco-Spanish War (1635–1659), starting with a French success, but ending with a Spanish victory.

The Gate of the Catalan Countries (Catalan: Porta dels Països Catalans), a work of the sculptor Emili Armengol, marks the Northern starting location of the Catalan Countries in Salses, Pyrénées-Orientales (this part of France belongs to what is also called Catalunya Nord, English: Northern Catalonia). After more than 20 years since the beginning of the project (often stopped, and even sometimes forbidden), it was finally inaugurated on September 28, 2003, being visible from the highway. Its conception and execution was in charge of the Union for the Catalan Region. The aerial view of the monument reminds one of a sickle, in reference to the Els Segadors anthem.

Côtes du Roussillon is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée for wines made in the Roussillon wine region of France. It is the least selective AOC in the Roussillon region. In 2002, 21,048,500 litres of Côtes du Roussillon were produced, 68% red, 28% rosé and 4% white. Grenache is the dominant variety in Red and Rosé. According to the AOC rules, however, red wines must be made with at least three varieties of grapes. The total of the two main variety grapes should not make more than 90% of the blend, and there must not be more than 60% of Carignan in it.

The Camp de Rivesaltes, also known as Camp Joffre, was an internment and transit camp in the commune of Rivesaltes in the department of Pyrénées-Orientales of the French Southern Zone during World War Two. Between August 11 and October 20, 1942, 2,313 foreign Jews, including 209 children were transferred from Rivesaltes via the Drancy internment camp to the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz, where they were murdered. Serge Klarsfeld described the camp as the Drancy of the Southern Zone. Since 2015, the site has been the Mémorial du Camp de Rivesaltes, a museum and memorial documenting the history of the site.

Saint-Hippolyte (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃tipɔlit] ), also known as Saint-Hippolyte-de-la-Salanque (pronounced [sɛ̃tipɔlit də la salɑ̃k]; Catalan: Sant Hipòlit de la Salanca, [santiˈpɔlid de la səˈlaŋkə]), is a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, Occitania, southern France.

Fitou (French pronunciation: [fitu] ; Occitan: Fitor) is a commune in the Aude department in southern France.

Muscat de Rivesaltes is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) for fortified wines (of the type vin doux naturel) made in the Roussillon wine region of France. They are similar to Rivesaltes AOC wines, except for the grape varieties used. The wines are white, and made from Muscat d'Alexandrie and Muscat à Petits Grains grapes, usually in equal quantities, although the appellation rules allow these varieties to be used in any proportion. The alcohol content must be at least 15 per cent by volume, the potential alcohol content at least 21.5 per cent, and the sugar content (fermentable sugars, glucose and fructose) of the finished wine at least 100 grams per liter.The AOC was created in 1956.The wine is usually served as an aperitif but in Rivesaltes ville and the surrounding area is commonly drunk by the glass in bars and cafes. A popular local starter is foie gras served with a glass of Muscat de Rivesaltes.

The Canton of Rivesaltes is a French former canton of the Pyrénées-Orientales department, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. It had 26,526 inhabitants (2012). It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015.

Rivesaltes (; French pronunciation: [ʁivzalt] ) is an appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for naturally sweet, fortified wines (vin doux naturel or VDN). The name refers to both a production region within Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France, and the style of sweet wines produced there. The Rivesaltes AOC designation of origin has been protected by INAO since 1972, combining several smaller protected designations created in 1936.
