Ashbrook High School is a public high school in the Gaston County Schools public school district located in Gastonia, North Carolina. The school was the result of the merger of two former senior high schools, Holbrook Senior High and Ashley Senior High. The first class graduated in 1971. Its attendance range covers most of the central and eastern portions of the City of Gastonia, as well as the towns of Ranlo and Lowell, and the community of Springdale.

Craig Farmstead is a historic home and farm located near Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. The William Moore Craig House was built about 1852, and is a one-story, single pile, two-room hewn- and sawn-frame house. The William Newton Craig House was built in 1886, and is a two-story, single pile Italianate style frame dwelling. Also on the property are the contributing privy (c. 1900-1910), meat / well house (c. 1900-1910), frame barn (c. 1890-1910), rectangular log pen barn (c. 1852-1860), and corn crib (c. 1900-1910).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Gastonia High School is a historic high school building located at Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. It was designed by Hugh Edward White and built in 1922–1924. It is a five-story, heavily ornamented E-shaped Tudor Revival style red brick school. It has a flat roof with parapet and features a four-bay projecting frontispiece and two-story, elegantly finished, auditorium. It has a six bays long and three bays wide addition built in 1955.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is located in the York-Chester Historic District.

York-Chester Historic District is a national historic district located at Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. It encompasses 649 contributing buildings, 2 contributing sites, and 1 contributing structure in a predominantly residential section of Gastonia. The dwellings were built between about 1856 and 1955, and include notable examples of Queen Anne and Bungalow / American Craftsman architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed former Gastonia High School. Other notable contributing resources include the Beal-Ragan Garden, Oakwood Cemetery, Caroline Hanna House (c. 1882), Spurrier Apartment building (c. 1929), Edgewood Apartments (c. 1937), and Devant J. and June S. Purvis House (1951).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

David Aaron Jenkins (April 5, 1822 – September 10, 1886) was a Republican politician and North Carolina State Treasurer from 1868 until 1876. His home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places before being demolished. He served in the General Assembly. He was the first official elected treasurer after it became a position elected by popular vote under the Constitution of North Carolina of 1868. He resigned before the end of his term, on which Governor Curtis H. Brogden named the Democrat John M. Worth to replace him. Jenkins was the only Republican elected North Carolina State Treasurer until 2016, when Dale Folwell was elected.His home located at Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 as the David Jenkins House. David Jenkins House was a historic home located at Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. It was built about 1876–1877, and was a two-story, three-bay, frame farmhouse with Greek Revival and Italianate style design elements. It featured a low hip roof supported by ornamental brackets. It was built by David A. Jenkins (1822–1886), a Republican politician and North Carolina State Treasurer from 1868 until 1876. The house has been demolished. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

In the early hours of April 8, 2008, Jamie Fraley (born March 5, 1986), of Gastonia, North Carolina, United States, told a friend over the phone that she was going to the hospital for the third time in the last 24 hours due to a stomach flu. When asked who was taking her there, Fraley said it was another friend and declined to further identify that person. She has not been seen since; her cellphone was found a few days later but provided no useful information as to her whereabouts. Investigators initially believed she had met with foul play, and began focusing on Ricky Simonds Sr., her fiancé's father, who lived in the same apartment complex, as a person of interest. He had driven Fraley to the hospital on one of her previous visits that day, and had a criminal record that included prison time for manslaughter after he had strangled a girlfriend in the 1980s. However, the investigation ended two months later when Simonds was found dead, apparently of heat stroke, in the trunk of a former girlfriend's car.In 2015, a prison inmate confessed that he had killed Fraley, but he was incarcerated at the time Fraley disappeared. The investigation continues, and in 2012 the case was the subject of an episode of the Investigation Discovery channel's Disappeared.
