Albert Hall Mansions

The London Map Fair, established in 1980, is a two-day annual event traditionally held in June at the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington, London. It brings together around 40 map dealers as exhibitors, and attracts hundreds of other dealers, curators and collectors from around the world. According to Ken Jennings, as of 2011 it was "Europe's largest event for buying and selling antique maps". It is noted for being the largest specialist fair of its kind. Exhibitors offer a range of atlases, travel books, globes, nautical charts, town plans, topographical prints and related ephemera. The fair also organizes lectures by cartographic experts, both mapsellers and academics. Guest speakers have included Peter Barber, former Head of Map Collections at the British Library; Laurence Worms, former President of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association, and writer and broadcaster Nicholas Crane. The fair also organizes talks on map collecting for beginners, held throughout the weekend. The current organizers of the fair are Tim Bryars, Massimo de Martini and Rainer Voigt.

Lowther Lodge is a house in South Kensington, London, England, immediately south of Hyde Park, which has housed the Royal Geographical Society since 1912.

The Royal Geographical Society with IBG, often shortened to RGS, is a learned society and professional body for geography based in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1830 for the advancement of geographical sciences, the Society has 16,000 members, with its work reaching the public through publications, research groups and lectures. The Society was founded in 1830 under the name Geographical Society of London as an institution to promote the 'advancement of geographical science'. It later absorbed the older African Association, which had been founded by Sir Joseph Banks in 1788, as well as the Raleigh Club and the Palestine Association. In 1995 it merged with the Institute of British Geographers, a body for academic geographers, to officially become the Royal Geographical Society with IBG. The society is governed by its Council, which is chaired by the Society's President, according to a set of statutes and standing orders. The members of Council and the President are elected from and by its Fellows, who are allowed to use the postnominal title FRGS. As a Chartered body, the RGS holds the register of Chartered Geographers in the public interest, a source of qualified, practising and experienced professional geographers. Fellows may apply for chartership if they fulfil the required criteria.

Albert Court is a Grade II listed mansion block development located in South Kensington, particularly the area known as "Albertopolis". The mansions occupy a plot to the southeast of the Royal Albert Hall along Prince Consort Road.

Gore House, built in the 1750s, with its 3-acre (1.2 ha) grounds was in Middlesex, England in a large exclave of St Margaret Westminster, Kensington Gore. Until its west wing soon became Grove House it was set apart from the east end of a row of 18th-century houses running from Palace Gate (near Kensington Palace) to the east, and was part of a phase of such houses facing Kensington Gardens as far as Knightsbridge, a broad bridge across the West Bourne. As the 1831 map, inset, shows: Upper Kensington Gore was the short-lived name for a short section of Kensington Road/Gore which was fronted by grand houses with large grounds and by Kensington Gardens. Its interiors were planned and supervised by leading architect Robert Adam. Between 1808 and 1821 William Wilberforce lived in it; he co-led the abolition of the slave trade and then slavery in the British Empire. It was occupied by the Countess of Blessington and the Count D'Orsay from 1836 to 1849. In May 1851, certain floors were converted to restaurant by the chef Alexis Soyer, with the aim of competing with and catering for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park to the north. After the exhibition, it was bought by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, for the Albertopolis cultural and educational sites. Today the Royal Albert Hall takes up its site.

The Shakespeare Memorial National Theatre Ball was an elaborate ball and fundraising event held in the Royal Albert Hall in 1911. It was noted for the lavishly decorated venue, costumes, and high profile of many of the guests in attendance. The ball hoped to raise funds for a national theatre dedicated to Shakespeare for the tercentenary of his death in 1916. Despite the displays of wealth, the event only raised £10,000, or around £1,000,000 today, and it would fail to achieve its goal. Despite this, the ideas would eventually develop into the establishment of the extant National Theatre in London.

The Grand Organ (described by its builder as The Voice of Jupiter) situated in the Royal Albert Hall in London is the second largest pipe organ in the United Kingdom, after the Liverpool Cathedral Grand Organ. It was originally built by Henry "Father" Willis and most recently rebuilt by Mander Organs, having 147 stops and, since the 2004 restoration, 9,999 pipes. An anonymous user publishes a tongue-in-cheek Twitter account supposedly written by the organ at @AlbertHOrgan.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1968 was the 13th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in London, United Kingdom, following the country's first victory at the 1967 contest with the song "Puppet on a String" by Sandie Shaw. Despite having won for the first time the year before, it was actually the third time that the United Kingdom had hosted the competition, having previously done so in 1960 and 1963, both of which also took place in London. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the contest was held at Royal Albert Hall on 6 April 1968, and was hosted by Katie Boyle for the third time. It was notably also the first time that the contest was broadcast in colour. Seventeen countries participated in the contest, the same countries that had participated the previous year. The winner was Spain with the song "La, la, la" by Massiel, and written/composed by Manuel de la Calva and Ramón Arcusa. This was Spain's first victory - and their first ever top five placing - in the contest. With her winning reprise, she became the first winner to perform part of her song in English, in addition to the original version.

The Rothmans International Tennis Tournament was a men's tennis tournament held in London, England between 1970 and 1977. The tournament was played on indoor carpet courts at Royal Albert Hall in London, except for the final edition in 1977 which was played at Earls Court Exhibition Centre, and was held in the March. From 1973 until 1977 the tournament was organized as part of the World Championship Tennis circuit.

The Chelsea Arts Club Ball was an annually held ball. It was organised by the Chelsea Arts Club and hosted in the Royal Albert Hall. The last ball was held in 1958.

The Royal School of Mines comprises the departments of Earth Science and Engineering, and Materials at Imperial College London. The Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics and parts of the London Centre for Nanotechnology and Department of Bioengineering are also housed within the building. The school as an organisation no longer exists, having been incorporated into the Faculty of Engineering since 2003. Today the Royal School of Mines refers to both the departments associated with the former school, and the Grade II listed Edwardian building by Sir Aston Webb, which is viewed as a classic of academic architecture. The building and relevant student union still carry the name.

The Royal Albert Hall is a concert hall on the northern edge of South Kensington, London. One of the UK's most treasured and distinctive buildings, it is held in trust for the nation and managed by a registered charity which receives no government funding. It can seat 5,272.Since the hall's opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from many performance genres have appeared on its stage. It is the venue for the BBC Proms concerts, which have been held there every summer since 1941. It is host to more than 390 shows in the main auditorium annually, including classical, rock and pop concerts, ballet, opera, film screenings with live orchestral accompaniment, sports, awards ceremonies, school and community events, and charity performances and banquets. A further 400 events are held each year in the non-auditorium spaces. Over its 151 year history the hall has hosted people from various fields, including meetings by Suffragettes, speeches from Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein, fights by Lennox Lewis, exhibition bouts by Muhammad Ali, and concerts from regular performers at the venue such as Eric Clapton and Shirley Bassey.The hall was originally supposed to have been called the Central Hall of Arts and Sciences, but the name was changed to the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences by Queen Victoria upon laying the Hall's foundation stone in 1867, in memory of her husband, Prince Albert, who had died six years earlier. It forms the practical part of a memorial to the Prince Consort; the decorative part is the Albert Memorial directly to the north in Kensington Gardens, now separated from the Hall by Kensington Gore.
