Hayes Barton

Bicton is a civil parish and a former manor in the East Devon district of Devon, England, near the town of Budleigh Salterton. The parish is surrounded, clockwise from the north, by the parishes of Colaton Raleigh, Otterton, East Budleigh and Woodbury. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 280. Much of the parish consists of Bicton Park, the historic home of the Rolle family, with Bicton Common, adjacent to Woodbury Common, in the west. The parish includes the village of Yettington on its southern border.

Bicton Arena is a multi-discipline equestrian venue in Devon, England. It is notable for hosting the Bicton Arena International 5*, the only CCI 5* event to run in the UK 2021, replacing the traditional Burghley Horse Trials normally held on the same weekend at Burghley House in Lincolnshire.The venue is part of the grounds of Bicton House (now used as Bicton College, and is managed by Clinton Devon Estates who manage the estate of Baron Clinton, the largest private landowner in the county.

The Bicton Arena International 5*, known for sponsorship reasons as the Chedington Bicton Park 5* Horse Trials was a CCI 5* eventing competition held as a one-off replacement for the Burghley Horse Trials in 2021, following the cancellation of both UK 5* events in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event was won by Gemma Tattersall riding Chilli Knight.

Budleigh Salterton Association Football Club is a football club based in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, England. They are currently members of the Devon League North East Division and play at Greenway Lane.

The Bicton Woodland Railway is a narrow-gauge railway running in Bicton Park Botanical Gardens in the grounds of Bicton House near Budleigh Salterton in Devon. The line was built in 1962 as a tourist attraction for visitors to the house. Most of the rolling stock was acquired from the Royal Arsenal Railway, Woolwich, with two locomotives, Woolwich and Carnegie coming from that source, as well as seven goods wagons which were reduced to their frames and converted to passenger carriages. It opened to passengers in 1963. Originally locomotives and carriages had royal blue livery. Additional rolling stock was acquired from the RAF Fauld railway and the internal railway of the LNWR Wolverton works. In 1998, the Bicton Gardens were put up for sale and the railway put into hiatus. The new owners sold the line's existing stock, and in 2000 took delivery of a 5.5-tonne diesel-powered replica tank engine. The line's original equipment was purchased by the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills museum at Waltham Abbey.

Woodbury Common in East Devon, England is an area of common land that is predominantly heathland adjacent to the village of Woodbury. It is bordered to the south by the edge of the towns of Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton, the hamlet of Yettington to the east, and the A3052 to the north. It is part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Within the common is Woodbury Castle, an Iron Age hill fort situated on a viewpoint overlooking westwards the villages of Woodbury and Woodbury Salterton and across the Exe estuary to the Haldon Hills, and overlooking eastwards the Otter Valley, part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The heathland has wide swathes of gorse and heather (bell, cross-leaved and ling varieties) and is a popular spot for orienteering, hill-walking, mountain biking and flying radio-controlled aircraft. It has a wide variety of wildlife, in particular the Nightjar, which migrates from Africa each year. The common contains a training ground for the Royal Marines, part of the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines based at nearby Lympstone in the parish of Woodbury. To the north end of Woodbury Common is the Woodbury Park Hotel, Golf and Country Club complex established by former Formula One driver Nigel Mansell.

Salem Chapel is in Vicarage Road, East Budleigh, Devon, England. Initially a Presbyterian, then a Congregational chapel, it was later owned by the Assemblies of God, and is now owned by the Historic Chapels Trust. The chapel, together with the adjacent assembly room and the boundary walls, is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is mentioned as the final two words of the short story, "Pomp and Vanities", written by S.Baring-Gould, circa 1865 and contained in his "Book of Ghost Stories", first published in 1903. The final two words, Salem Chapel, are referenced as an example of everything "heaven is not"!

East Budleigh is a small village in East Devon, England. The villages of Yettington, Colaton Raleigh, and Otterton lie to the west, north and east of East Budleigh, with the seaside town of Budleigh Salterton about two miles south. Until the River Otter to the east silted up, the village was a market town and port; it was still being used by ships in the 15th century, according to John Leland.Sir Walter Raleigh was born in nearby Hayes Barton in c.1552, and his parents are buried in All Saints churchyard in the village. The 14th-century church contains attractive pew ends including one bearing the Raleigh coat of arms. In 2006 a life-size bronze statue of Raleigh by sculptor Vivien Mallock was unveiled by the Duke of Kent and is positioned at the top of the village close to the church. The cost of £30,000 was met by British American Tobacco, and was unveiled in the week when new anti-smoking laws came into effect in England and Wales.Governor Roger Conant, founder of Salem, Massachusetts and the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was born in East Budleigh in 1592 to Richard Conant. East Budleigh had a railway station that was situated between the village and Otterton, which was closed in 1967.

Bicton College is a college with around 1,000 full-time and 3,500 part-time pupils, located near Budleigh Salterton, Devon, England. It is part of the Cornwall College group. The college specialises in agriculture and currently offers courses in such topics as animal care, countryside management, horticulture, veterinary nursing, and agricultural engineering, aboriculture and floristry. The college's courses range from level 1 all the way to foundation degrees. For the level-4 courses the college works in partnership with the University of Plymouth. The college was founded under the name Bicton Farm Institute in 1947, when the Devon County Council leased Bicton House and part of the Bicton Park estate from Lord Clinton. The name was changed in 1967 to Bicton College of Agriculture and in 2002 to Bicton College. For the years 2007-2008 Bicton College was recognised as a Centre of Excellence in Teacher Training for its training of teachers in the Post Compulsory (Post 16) sector.

Bicton House, or Bickton House, is a late 18th- or early 19th-century country house, which stands on the campus of Bicton College, Bicton, near Exmouth, East Devon. It is a Grade II* listed building. The park and gardens are Grade I listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.It is located about three miles from Sidmouth, in Devonshire. It had been in the East Budleigh Hundred.

Budleigh Salterton railway station is a closed railway station that served the town of Budleigh Salterton in Devon, England. It was opened by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) in 1897 but was closed to passengers in 1967 due to the Beeching Axe.

Woodbury Castle is an Iron Age hillfort near the village of Woodbury in the English county of Devon, some eight miles southeast of the city of Exeter. The fort is situated on a high point of Woodbury Common, at approximately 185 metres (607 ft) above sea level, in a commanding position with views up and down the Exe Estuary and across Lyme Bay in both directions. The structure is a prehistoric military type of earthwork.
