Bicton College

Bicton House, or Bickton House, is a late 18th- or early 19th-century country house, which stands on the campus of Bicton College, Bicton, near Exmouth, East Devon. It is a Grade II* listed building. The park and gardens are Grade I listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.It is located about three miles from Sidmouth, in Devonshire. It had been in the East Budleigh Hundred.

The Bicton Woodland Railway is a narrow-gauge railway running in Bicton Park Botanical Gardens in the grounds of Bicton House near Budleigh Salterton in Devon. The line was built in 1962 as a tourist attraction for visitors to the house. Most of the rolling stock was acquired from the Royal Arsenal Railway, Woolwich, with two locomotives, Woolwich and Carnegie coming from that source, as well as seven goods wagons which were reduced to their frames and converted to passenger carriages. It opened to passengers in 1963. Originally locomotives and carriages had royal blue livery. Additional rolling stock was acquired from the RAF Fauld railway and the internal railway of the LNWR Wolverton works. In 1998, the Bicton Gardens were put up for sale and the railway put into hiatus. The new owners sold the line's existing stock, and in 2000 took delivery of a 5.5-tonne diesel-powered replica tank engine. The line's original equipment was purchased by the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills museum at Waltham Abbey.

Bicton Arena is a multi-discipline equestrian venue in Devon, England. It is notable for hosting the Bicton Arena International 5*, the only CCI 5* event to run in the UK 2021, replacing the traditional Burghley Horse Trials normally held on the same weekend at Burghley House in Lincolnshire.The venue is part of the grounds of Bicton House (now used as Bicton College, and is managed by Clinton Devon Estates who manage the estate of Baron Clinton, the largest private landowner in the county.

The Bicton Arena International 5*, known for sponsorship reasons as the Chedington Bicton Park 5* Horse Trials was a CCI 5* eventing competition held as a one-off replacement for the Burghley Horse Trials in 2021, following the cancellation of both UK 5* events in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event was won by Gemma Tattersall riding Chilli Knight.

Salem Chapel is in Vicarage Road, East Budleigh, Devon, England. Initially a Presbyterian, then a Congregational chapel, it was later owned by the Assemblies of God, and is now owned by the Historic Chapels Trust. The chapel, together with the adjacent assembly room and the boundary walls, is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is mentioned as the final two words of the short story, "Pomp and Vanities", written by S.Baring-Gould, circa 1865 and contained in his "Book of Ghost Stories", first published in 1903. The final two words, Salem Chapel, are referenced as an example of everything "heaven is not"!

East Budleigh railway station is a closed railway station that served the villages of East Budleigh and Otterton in Devon, England.

Otterton Water Mill is at the village of Otterton, near Budleigh Salterton in Devon, England. Otterton Water Mill is set beside the River Otter in Devon. A watermill was recorded in this locality in Domesday Book in 1086. The mill possessed three pairs of stones. The manor and its mill were given by King Henry V to the nuns of Syon Abbey. At the Dissolution the manor was sold to Richard Duke, in whose family's possession the mill remained for 200 years. Sold again in 1785 to Denys Rolle, the estate and the mill subsequently passed through marriage to the Clinton family, who still own the mill as part of the Clinton Devon Estates. Milling stopped in 1959 and the buildings were subsequently used for grain storage. The watermill was restored in 1977 by Desna Greenhow, and has been operated again since, remaining functional today. Beside the mill is a bakery, a shop, a restaurant and a gallery of art and crafts. The mill hosts a yearly event with a "Portable Antiquities team" to examine archaeological finds made in the area.

Colaton Raleigh is a village and civil parish in East Devon, England. The parish is surrounded clockwise from the north by the parishes of Aylesbeare, Newton Poppleford and Harpford, Otterton, Bicton, Woodbury and a small part of Farringdon.The village is located to the west of the River Otter on the B3178 road between Newton Poppleford to the north and East Budleigh to the south. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book stating it had 20 villagers, 8 smallholders and 6 slaves. In 1066 it was owned by Earl Harold (King Harold II) before passing to King William after Harold's defeat at the Battle of Hastings. The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist. The village has a shop named "Woods Village Stores" in the centre next to the B3178 road. Bus route 157 operated by Stagecoach South West runs hourly towards Exmouth and Sidmouth through the village. The village's public house is called the Otter Inn; its large garden contains monkey puzzle trees.

Otterton Priory was a priory in Otterton, Devon founded before 1087 and suppressed in 1414. The tower of the parish church is the major remaining structure of the monastery. The manor house probably reuses parts of the monastery's fabric.

Bicton is a civil parish and a former manor in the East Devon district of Devon, England, near the town of Budleigh Salterton. The parish is surrounded, clockwise from the north, by the parishes of Colaton Raleigh, Otterton, East Budleigh and Woodbury. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 280. Much of the parish consists of Bicton Park, the historic home of the Rolle family, with Bicton Common, adjacent to Woodbury Common, in the west. The parish includes the village of Yettington on its southern border.

Otterton is a village and civil parish in East Devon, England. The parish lies on the English Channel and is surrounded clockwise from the south by the parishes of East Budleigh, Bicton, Colaton Raleigh, Newton Poppleford and Harpford and Sidmouth. In 2001 its population was 700, compared to 622 a hundred years earlier. At the 2011 census the population had reduced to 656. Otterton is part of Raleigh electoral ward whose total population at the above census was 2,120.

East Budleigh is a small village in East Devon, England. The villages of Yettington, Colaton Raleigh, and Otterton lie to the west, north and east of East Budleigh, with the seaside town of Budleigh Salterton about two miles south. Until the River Otter to the east silted up, the village was a market town and port; it was still being used by ships in the 15th century, according to John Leland.Sir Walter Raleigh was born in nearby Hayes Barton in c.1552, and his parents are buried in All Saints churchyard in the village. The 14th-century church contains attractive pew ends including one bearing the Raleigh coat of arms. In 2006 a life-size bronze statue of Raleigh by sculptor Vivien Mallock was unveiled by the Duke of Kent and is positioned at the top of the village close to the church. The cost of £30,000 was met by British American Tobacco, and was unveiled in the week when new anti-smoking laws came into effect in England and Wales.Governor Roger Conant, founder of Salem, Massachusetts and the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was born in East Budleigh in 1592 to Richard Conant. East Budleigh had a railway station that was situated between the village and Otterton, which was closed in 1967.
