Edinburgh Arms

York City Arms Sports Club is a Grade II listed former sports club, originally a public house, on Fawcett Street in York, England. The building is dated to around 1830 in its official listing, and The Press reports that it opened as the City Arms pub in 1829. After operating for more than a century, it was taken over by local sports clubs in 1976 and used as their headquarters until its closure in 2001, after which it was converted into flats.

The Punch Bowl is a Grade II listed public house on the corner of Blossom Street and Nunnery Lane in York, England. It was formed from adjoining buildings dating from about 1835 and 1863. The site has supported inns since the late 18th century and the premises were enlarged in 1895 and 1974. It was included in the Central Historic Core conservation area in 1968. JD Wetherspoon has owned the freehold since 2002.

Fishergate Primary School is a historic school on Fishergate, immediately south of York city centre in North Yorkshire, England. The York School Board commissioned Walter Brierley to design a new school building on Fishergate, to accommodate 180 pupils. Work started in 1893, and the school opened in August 1895. The school building was Grade II listed in 1997. In 2022, two Victorian rocking horses were discovered in the school's basement, then restored for the use of current pupils. By that time, the roll had risen to 300 children. In 2025, it was the first primary school in York to be designated as a School of Sanctuary. The building is constructed of orange-brown brick, with dressings in orange brick, some of which is moulded, and slate roofs. It has two storeys and the front has a nine-bay central wing, with three-bay crosswings either side. Behind is a tall six-bay hall range, and at the rear is a 16-bay two-storey range. Most of the windows are sashes, while the hall has dormer windows. The first floor windows at the front are separate by brick pilasters, with a brick frieze and cornice above. The central entrance has a round arch with a lion keystone and a panel above with the Royal Arms and the date "1894".

The Masons Arms is a pub on Fishergate, immediately south of the city centre of York, in England. The Masons Arms was first recorded in 1835, when George Tilney successfully applied for a licence. It had a bar, tap room and smoke room, and also offered one bedroom for visitors. The pub was demolished and rebuilt in 1936, in a Tudor revival style. The new building was designed by James Knight, who was working for Biscomb and Ferrey. It is of two storeys, the ground floor of stone, and the first floor of brick, with timbers inlaid to resemble timber framing. There are two front entrances, one either side of the central bay, with identical porches. At each end of the front is a large corbel, one depicting the White Rose of York, and the other five lions, taken from the city's coat of arms. The ground floor bar area has panelling and a fireplace dating from about 1830, which was taken from the gatehouse of York Castle, that having been demolished in 1935. The lounge bar and sitting room were combined after World War II, but the public bar remains a separate space. The building was Grade II listed in 1996. York Barbican is an indoor entertainment venue located in York, England. Named after the nearby barbican attached to Walmgate Bar, the venue hosts a busy calendar of live music, comedy and sports, as well as business events and conferences. It has a 1,500 seating capacity and a 1,900 standing capacity.York Barbican is the host venue for the second biggest-ranking snooker tournament, the UK Championship, and has done so from 2001 to 2006, and then from 2011 onwards. The centre is located on the southern end of York city centre, opposite the city walls.

Tower House is a former military headquarters building in Fishergate, York, England.

St George's Roman Catholic church is located in the centre of the city of York, England, on George Street in the Diocese of Middlesbrough. The Church was designed by Joseph Hansom and was the first pro-Cathedral of the Diocese of Beverley.

The Foss Barrier consists of a retractable floodgate and pumping station owned and managed by the Environment Agency. It straddles the River Foss in York, just above the confluence (where two rivers join) with the River Ouse. The barrier’s purpose is to prevent water from the Ouse flowing upstream into the Foss, raising water levels and flooding properties along the River Foss. The pumps next to the flood gate move water around the barrier via a side culvert so that it can continue to drain into the Ouse. This prevents water levels on the Foss rising when the barrier is closed. The Ouse’s normal water level at York is approximately 5 metres AOD (Above Ordnance Datum). When the river level reaches 7.5 metres AOD, the barrier is lowered into the Foss, shutting it off from the Ouse. The electrically driven barrier takes less than five minutes to lower into position. The barrier operates as a ‘turn and lift’ gate (see below) so it opens and closes in a similar way to a garage door. The pump-house attached to the barrier maintain the water level in the Foss at around 6.5 metres AOD. When the flood subsides and the level of the Ouse drops back to 6.5 metres, the levels in both rivers are equalised so the barrier opens, and the pumps shut down.

Raindale Mill is a reconstructed early 19th-century flour mill which was moved from Raindale Valley on the North York Moors to the grounds of York Castle Museum in the 1960s.

The River Foss is in North Yorkshire, England. It is a tributary of the River Ouse. It rises in the Foss Crooks Woods near Oulston Reservoir close to the village of Yearsley and runs south through the Vale of York to the Ouse in the centre of York. The name most likely comes from the Latin word Fossa, meaning ditch. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The York district was settled by Norwegian and Danish people, so parts of the place names could be old Norse. Referring to the etymological dictionary "Etymologisk ordbog", ISBN 82-905-2016-6 deals with the common Danish and Norwegian languages – roots of words and the original meaning. The old Norse word Fos (waterfall) means impetuous. The River Foss was dammed, and even though the elevation to the River Ouse is small, a waterfall was formed. This may have led to the name Fos which became Foss. The responsibility for the management of the river's drainage area is the Foss Internal drainage board (IDB). It has responsibility for the area from Crayke to the pre-1991 city boundary of York covering 9,085 hectares and 162.54 km of waterways. The Foss IDB is part of the York Consortium of Drainage Boards that oversees 10 IDB's in the Yorkshire region.The typical river level range at the Foss Barrier is between 5.05m and 7.90m. The highest river level recorded was 10.20 metres and the river level reached 9.34 metres on 23 January 2008.

York Castle Museum is a museum located in York, North Yorkshire, England, on the site of York Castle, which was originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068. The museum itself was founded by John L. Kirk in 1938, and is housed in prison buildings which were built on the site of the castle in the 18th century, the debtors' prison (built in 1701–05 using stone from the ruins of the castle) and the female prison (built 1780–85).
