Shattuck Hotel is a historic building that was built as a hotel, located on the corner of Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way in Downtown Berkeley. Opened in December 1910 with the consent of Rosa Shattuck, wife of prominent gold seeker and builder Francis K. Shattuck, the hotel is located near the site of Rosa and Francis Shattuck's former Victorian estate. It has been a City of Berkeley landmark since 1987. It has also been operated as the Whitecotton Hotel and is currently operated as the Hotel Shattuck Plaza.

Downtown is the mass transit hub of Berkeley, with several AC Transit and UC Berkeley bus lines converging on the city's busiest BART station, as well as the location of Berkeley's civic center, high school, and Berkeley City College.

On June 16, 2015, shortly after midnight, five Irish J-1 visa students and one Irish-American died and seven others were injured after a balcony on which they were standing collapsed. The group was celebrating a 21st birthday party in Berkeley, California. The balcony was on the 5th floor of an apartment building at 2020 Kittredge Street in Berkeley, then called Library Gardens. The district attorney of Alameda County launched a criminal probe into the incident. In January 2022, one of the injured died after suffering a stroke related to the injuries.In June 2015 Mayor Tom Bates of Berkeley promised a wide-ranging investigation into the cause of the accident. Considered the likeliest cause is that the balcony of the building was not constructed properly, leading to dry rot, leading to the balcony becoming structurally compromised. Overwhelming evidence points to dry rot causing the collapse, and not the weight of the 13 students on it at the time.

Chamber of Commerce Building is a historical building in downtown Berkeley, California. The Chamber of Commerce Building was built in 1925. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 29, 1985. The twelve-story Chamber of Commerce Building was the first highrise building in Berkeley. The building was designed by Walter H. Ratcliff Jr. for the Central Berkeley Building Company. The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce headquarters was on the top floor from 1925 to 1938. The Chamber of Commerce moved across the street to 100 Berkeley Square in 1838. In 1905, the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce was founded. In 1927, on the ground floor the American Trust Bank Berkeley Branch opened. In 1938, the building's name changed to the American Trust Building. The famous Stanford Axe award, was stored in American Trust vault and was the stole by the University of California on its way to the Greek Theater in an armored car on April 3, 1930. Later Wells Fargo Bank moved in and the building became the Wells Fargo Building. The building was listed as a City of Berkeley Landmark on December 17, 1984. James W. Plachek designed a number of other buildings in Berkeley, including: Berkeley Public Library, Corder Building, New Hotel Carquinez, UC Theatre, schools, and civic buildings. Architect James W. Plachek office was is the Heywood Building.

The U.S. Post Office, also known as the Berkeley Main Post Office, is a local branch of the United States Postal Service. The building, located at 2000 Allston Way Berkeley, California, was built in 1914-15.The building has been described as a "free adaptation of Brunelleschi's Foundling Hospital." Designed in the Second Renaissance Revival style, the front of the building features terra cotta arches supported by plain tuscan columns.The Post Office is within the Civic Center Historic District, a five block area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district is a locally significant ensemble of harmoniously planned civic buildings that retains a high degree of integrity since achieving significance in 1950. The post office, along with the "Old" City Hall (1909) in the Beaux-Arts style, is among the earliest and the most decorative of the thirteen buildings in the district.The architect is unknown but Oscar Wenderoth is listed on the cornerstone as he was director of the Office of the Supervising Architect that designed this and many other federal government buildings. The floor space doubled with the completion of the annex in 1932. A few years later, the Treasury Relief Art Project commissioned a sculpture and a mural for the lobby. Both are well-preserved examples of the styles, subjects and dominant themes of New Deal Art. The post office was designated Berkeley Landmark No. 38 on June 16, 1980 by the Landmarks Preservation Commission and added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 1981.

The Berkeley Historic Civic Center District is a 9.9-acre (4.0 ha) historic district in Berkeley, California, U.S. It comprises portions of a five-block area surrounding Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park, primarily made up of civic-related buildings. It has been listed as one of the National Register of Historic Places since December 3, 1998; and listed as a Berkeley Landmark by the City of Berkeley since December 7, 1998.

The California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT) was a research organization at the University of California, Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies. CCIT was formed in 2001 as a group within California Partners for Advanced Traffic and Highways (PATH), another UC Berkeley transportation research center; in 2003 they became an independent center, with a focus on accelerating the implementation of research findings and technical solutions that improve the safety and efficiency of California's surface transportation. It came full circle when it re-merged with PATH in 2011 to form Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology, retaining the PATH acronym instead of "PATT".CCIT was formed by Hamed Benouar, a former Caltrans executive who is also a former California State Chief Traffic Engineer. The last CCIT Director was Thomas West, also a former Caltrans executive and current Co-Director at PATH.
