High Cross, Newport

Fourteen Locks (grid reference ST277886) is a series of locks, also known as the Cefn Flight, on the Crumlin arm of the Monmouthshire Canal at Rogerstone in Newport, South Wales. The flight of locks was completed in 1799 and raises the water level 160 ft (50 m) in just 800 yd (740 m). This is one of the steepest rises for a major run in the UK which, combined with the sheer number of locks, makes it one of the most significant in the country. The run of locks includes a series of embanked ponds, pounds, sluices and weirs to control the water supply, with no set of gates shared between individual locks. It therefore comprises a flight of locks rather than a lock staircase.

Newport West (Welsh: Gorllewin Casnewydd) is one of two parliamentary constituencies for the city of Newport, South Wales, in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) using the first-past-the-post voting system. Paul Flynn, of the Labour Party, was the MP from the 1987 general election until his death on 17 February 2019. Consequently, a by-election was held in the constituency on Thursday 4 April 2019. It is currently represented by Ruth Jones. The constituency is set to be abolished, as part of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies and under the June 2023 final recommendations of the Boundary Commission for Wales for the next United Kingdom general election. Its wards is to be split between Newport East, and Newport West and Islwyn.

Pye Corner railway station is a station serving a residential area in the west of Newport, Wales, between the suburbs of Bassaleg and High Cross. It opened on 14 December 2014.

Bassaleg Junction was a railway station which served the village of Bassaleg, Monmouthshire.

St Basil's Church stands in the village of Bassaleg, to the west of the city of Newport, Wales. An active parish church, it is a Grade II* listed building.

Rogerstone (Welsh: Tŷ du, meaning "Black house") is a large village and community (parish) in Newport, Wales. The area is governed by Newport City Council. The village falls within the ancient parish of Bassaleg and historic county of Monmouthshire. The parish lies at the gateway to the Sirhowy valley, to the north of Newport on the eastern side of the Ebbw River. It is bounded by the M4 motorway to the south, the Ebbw River to the west, the Henllys Vale to the east and the city boundary with Caerphilly county borough to the north. Rogerstone railway station is on the Ebbw Valley Railway. It opened on 6 February 2008 and links Ebbw Vale to Cardiff Central and Newport via Rogerstone. Pye Corner railway station, to the south of the ward and on the same line, was opened on 14 December 2014.

Bassaleg School (Welsh: Ysgol Basaleg) is a comprehensive secondary school for pupils aged 11 to 18 years, situated in the suburb of Bassaleg on the western side of the city of Newport, South Wales. The present buildings of the school range in age from the early 20th century to the present day. The buildings form a natural campus, with playing fields, lawns and gardens. It has over 1,700 pupils. Because of expanding residential development in the area, consultations took place in 2021 to 2022 to increase capacity to over 2,000 pupils by 2023. Plans were approved by Newport City Council in February 2022 and work on the project began in March 2022.

Monmouth Comprehensive School (Welsh: Ysgol Gyfun Trefynwy) is a comprehensive secondary school for pupils aged 11–18, situated in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales.

Bassaleg (Welsh: Basaleg) is a suburb on the west side of Newport, Wales. It is in the Graig electoral ward and community. Bassaleg is located two miles northwest of Newport city centre. Bassaleg is bounded by the A467 road (A4072) to the east, the railway spur to Lower Machen (the former Brecon and Merthyr Railway) to the north, the St Mellons Road (B4288) to the south and Rhiwderin to the east. The Ebbw River runs through the area. The A468 road passes through towards Caerphilly and junction 28 of the M4 motorway is less than a mile to the south.

Ridgeway is an area in Newport, Wales, in the electoral ward and community of Allt-yr-yn. It is well known for its ridge which overlooks Rogerstone and the nearby woodland areas. Ridgeway is at the end of the estate the main road breaks off onto the M4 motorway. Ridgeway is a predominantly middle class area in Newport, Gwent. Alongside the neighbouring Alt-yr-yn and has historically been a highly sought after area of Newport due to its catchment proximity of schools such as Glasllwch Primary, which has an Estyn “Excellent” rating, and up until its move in 2009, the independent Rougemont School. The estate consists of mainly 1920s housing with generous gardens and wide streets. Local amenities include the Ridgeway Inn and Ridgeway Cafe. The area has earned the nickname of “Little Switzerland” due to the generous panoramic views and style of housing.

Allt-yr-yn (Welsh: Allt-yr-ynn) is a suburb of the city of Newport, south-east Wales.

Newport West (Welsh: Gorllewin Casnewydd) is a constituency of the Senedd. It elects one Member of the Senedd by the first past the post method of election. Also, however, it is one of eight constituencies in the South Wales East electoral region, which elects four additional members, in addition to eight constituency members, to produce a degree of proportional representation for the region as a whole. It is currently represented by Jayne Bryant for Labour.
