Carpentras (French pronunciation: [kaʁpɑ̃tʁa], formerly [kaʁpɑ̃tʁas]; Provençal Occitan: Carpentràs in classical norm or Carpentras in Mistralian norm; Latin: Carpentoracte) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. As capital of the Comtat Venaissin, it was frequently the residence of the Avignon popes; the Papal States retained possession of the Venaissin until the French Revolution. Nowadays, Carpentras is a commercial center for Comtat Venaissin and is famous for the black truffle markets held from winter to early spring. Carpentras briefly held France's all-time high-temperature record, during the heatwave of June 2019.

The Bibliothèque Inguimbertine is a scholarly library located in Carpentras. It was established by Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert, the Bishop of Carpentras from 1735 to 1754. It has been called "the oldest of our municipal libraries" by current chief librarian Jean-François Delmas. It currently contains about 220,000 books. The library is known to bibliophiles all over France and is scheduled to move into roomier quarters in the former Hôtel-Dieu in 2013. Which has been done.

Carpentras Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Siffrein de Carpentras) is a Roman Catholic church and former cathedral in Carpentras, Provence, France. The church was built in the 15th century by the order of Benedict XIII. The site used to be a Roman cathedral. Construction started in 1409 and continued for 150 years, with seven different architects working on the building. The main entrance was built in 1512–1514, then modified a hundred years later, and then modified again in 2000–2002. The tower was built in the early 20th century. The Arch of Carpentras is a Roman triumphal arch from the beginning of the first century AD, located at Carpentras in the French department of Vaucluse. It has a single fornix, framed by fluted lesenes and decorated with an archivolt of vine tendrils. At the outer corners there are engaged columns. On the sides there are images of trophies flanked by barbarian prisoners. These trophy reliefs are also found on the short sides of the Arch of Orange, which is however more richly decorated. The arch was originally located on the city's cardo maximus. Later it was incorporated into the old cathedral as an access door and still later into the episcopal palace (now the courthouse). The arch was included in the first list of French historic monuments in 1840.

The Hôtel-Dieu of Carpentras is one of the oldest hospitals in Comtat Venaissin, in Vaucluse. Built in 1754 by Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert, it was used as a hospital until 2002. In the near future, the bibliotheque Inguimbertine will be transferred to this place.

Carpentras (Lat. dioecesis Carpentoratensis) was a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the Provence region (later part of France), from the later Roman Empire until 1801. It was part of the ecclesiastical province under the Metropolitan, the Archbishop of Arles. The bishop was a major figure in the Comtat Venaissin, and a member of the Estates of the Comtat. He was a direct appointee of the pope.

The Roux Graineterie of Carpentras, seed company founded in 1907, at 34 rue Bel Air Carpentras in Vaucluse, France is an outstanding example of this industry, which now has five such institutions in France of which only two are classified as historical monuments (one in Carignan in Ardennes and the other monastic barn 14th century to Blois in Loir-et-Cher ). Carpentras station is a railway station serving the town Carpentras, Vaucluse department, southeastern France. It is the terminus of the railway line from Sorgues to Carpentras, which was closed for passenger traffic in 1938, but reopened after renovation in 2015. Additionally, Carpentras station was on the railway line from Orange to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue which also lost its passenger service in 1938 and freight service in stages between 1955 and 1988. Today, Carpentras station is served by regional passenger trains to Sorgues and Avignon. Freight traffic ended in February 2013 prior to the rehabilitation of the infrastructure for the restart of passenger traffic, although some freight tracks were retained in Carpentras.
