Buer is the largest suburb of Gelsenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Hochstrasse in the heart of Buer is the largest shopping street in Gelsenkirchen.

Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord station is located in the city of Gelsenkirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is on the Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord–Marl Lippe railway. The current station was opened in 1998 and is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station as a halt (Haltepunkt). It replaced a station 600 metres to the southwest, which had been opened in 1905.

Parkstadion (German pronunciation: [ˈpaʁkˌʃtaːdi̯ɔn] (listen)) was a multi-purpose stadium in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, that is no longer used to host any major events. The stadium was built in 1973 and hosted five matches of the 1974 FIFA World Cup. It had a capacity of 62,109 with seats for 45,067. During the 1974 FIFA World Cup, Yugoslavia set the record for the biggest win ever at a FIFA World Cup with a 9–0 hammering of Zaire. Michael Jackson performed at the stadium during his Bad World Tour on 4 September 1988 and during his HIStory World Tour on 15 June 1997. He was also scheduled to perform at the stadium on 6 September 1992 on his Dangerous World Tour, but cancelled due to ill health. The Rolling Stones performed at the stadium during their Urban Jungle Tour on 16 August 1990 and during their Bridges To Babylon Tour on 27 July 1998. Pink Floyd performed at the stadium during The Division Bell Tour on 23 August 1994. It was the home ground of football club FC Schalke 04 until May 2001, before the newly built and adjacent Arena AufSchalke opened in July of the same year. The stadium hosted two UEFA Euro 1988 fixtures (West Germany v Denmark, and The Netherlands v the Republic of Ireland), as well as the first leg of the 1997 UEFA Cup Final between Schalke and Internazionale.The last competitive football match played in the stadium was a Bundesliga fixture between Schalke and SpVgg Unterhaching on 19 May 2001. The match was attended by approximately 65,000 people. At the end of the match, after a difficult 5–3 win against SpVgg Unterhaching, and thanks to a last minute goal scored by Hamburg SV against Bayern Munich, the crowd celebrated Schalke's first Bundesliga title before Patrik Andersson equalized in the additional time for Bayern, made Bayern retain the title and instantly killed the joy of the fans celebrating in Parkstadion. The stadium is now partly demolished and the Jumbotron that was placed atop of the northern stand was donated to Erzgebirgsstadion in Aue, where it was installed during the renovations of the stadium in 2004.

Westerholt Power Station was a coal fired power station in Gelsenkirchen-Westerholt, Germany. The power plant consisted of two units built in the 1960s, each capable of producing 150 MW of electricity. Its smokestack, built in 1981, was 337 metres (1106 feet) tall, making it Germany's tallest chimney at the time. The power station was decommissioned on May 13, 2005, and the chimney demolished on Sunday, December 3, 2006, at 10:53 a.m. It remains the tallest freestanding structure of any type to ever be demolished in a controlled manner. The only taller structures to ever be demolished in any manner(uncontrolled) being the two towers of the World Trade Center. It was the tallest structure in North Rhine-Westphalia. Before its erection the 320.8 m tall Wesel transmitter tower took this claim. After the demolition of the chimney, the Wesel tower once again became the tallest structure in North Rhine-Westphalia. A district heating plant, "FWK Westerholt", has been in operation on this site since the spring of 2004. There are six boilers there to provide heat for the district heating network of the northern Ruhr Area. The Westerholt coal mine is located only a few hundred metres away. Both the power plant and the mine are on the city limits of Gelsenkirchen in the Hassel neighborhood and were named for the contiguous (and at that time still independent) city of Westerholt in what was then the district of Recklinghausen (today the city is a part of the city of Herten and is named "Herten-Westerholt").

Arena AufSchalke (German pronunciation: [aˈʁeːnaː ʔaʊfˈʃalkə]), currently known as Veltins-Arena (pronounced [ˈfɛltɪnsʔaˌʁeːnaː]) for sponsorship reasons, is an indoor football stadium in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It opened on 13 August 2001, as the new home ground for Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04. It hosted the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final and five matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, including a quarter-final. It has a capacity of 62,271 (standing and seated) for league matches and 54,740 (seated only) for international matches. The stadium has a retractable roof and a retractable pitch. The naming rights to the stadium were sold on 1 July 2005 to German brewery Veltins.

Gesamtschule Berger Feld is a gesamtschule in Gelsenkirchen. It is located in the Erle region and has 1325 pupils and 118 teachers. It is known for the fact that a great number of its former students have become professional football players.

Gelsenkirchen-Hassel is a railway station on the Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord–Marl Lippe railway in Gelsenkirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station. It was opened on 27 September 1968. It has a platform on the west side of the track. It can be reached via stairs and a ramp. It is served by Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn line S 9 at 60-minute intervals. Haltern am See, Marl, Gladbeck, Bottrop, Essen, Wuppertal It is also served by bus route 243 (Buer + Bertlich – Westerholt – Herten, at 60-minute intervals) and taxibus service 240 (to Polsum at 60-minute intervals).

The Gemeinschaftsgrundschule Im Brömm is a primary school in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The school was built in 1913 as Katholische Volksschule – Josefschule. After having been destroyed in World War II the school was rebuilt in the 1950s. In 1963 the school got a gym and an indoor pool. On the schoolyard was built a mini-soccerfield in the year 2008.

The Gelsenberg Lager was a subcamp of the concentration camp Buchenwald in Gelsenkirchen-Horst. About 2000 Hungarian Jewish women were held in this subcamp, and were given the task of clearing the area of the Gelsenberg Benzin AG of rubble in the summer 1944. Approximately 150 of them were killed during heavy bombing attacks on the hydrogenation plant in September 1944. A few badly injured survivors were taken to Gelsenkirchen hospitals. After the dissolution of the camp in the middle of September 1944, the remaining Hungarian Jewish women in the camp were sent to the subcamp Soemmerda in Thuringia and the other women were shifted to Essen into another subcamp of the KZ Buchenwald The Gelsenzentrum, a center for urban and contemporary history in Gelsenkirchen, contains documents concerning the history of the subcamp Gelsenberglager.

The Rhine–Herne Canal (German: Rhein-Herne-Kanal) is a 45.6-kilometre-long (28.3 mi) transportation canal in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with five canal locks. The canal was built over a period of eight years (5 April 1906 – 14 July 1914) and connects the harbour in Duisburg on the Rhine (51°26′59″N 6°46′1″E) with the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Henrichenburg (51°37′1″N 7°19′19″E), following the valley of the Emscher. It was widened in the 1980s. The Rhein-Herne canal ship was designed specifically for this canal; normally of about 1300–1350 ton capacity, it has a maximum draft of 2.50 metres (8.2 ft), a length of approximately 80 metres (260 ft), and maximum beam of 9.50 metres (31.2 ft). Originally the Rhine-Herne canal ended in Herne, where it met a branch of the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal running from Henrichenburg to Herne, the intersection situated just above the East Herne lock. After the closure of the last part of the Henrichenburg to Herne canal, the Henrichenburg-Herne section of the Dortmund-Ems was added to the Rhein-Herne Canal.

Scholven Power Station is a coal-fired power plant in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. With an installed capacity of 2,126 megawatts, it is one of the largest power stations in Europe. It is owned by Uniper.

Horst Castle (German: Schloss Horst), located in the Horst district of Gelsenkirchen, is recognized as one of Westphalia's oldest and most significant Renaissance buildings. During its construction in the 16th century, it ranked among the largest four-winged castle complexes north of the Alps, significantly influencing the architectural style of the Lippe Renaissance. On December 15, 1983, it was declared a listed building.
