Historically in Lancashire, it is a house of regional interest, and its listing notes its architectural and historical value in relation to Atherton's development from the late 17th century onwards.

Atherton Collieries Association Football Club is a football club based in Atherton, Greater Manchester, England. The club are currently members of the Northern Premier League Premier Division and play at Alder House. They are full members of the Lancashire County Football Association. Between 1919 and 1965 Atherton Collieries were winners of the Bolton Combination ten times. By 1964–65 they had won the Lancashire FA Amateur Shield six times, a record which is still unsurpassed. They are nicknamed "Colls".

It is a member of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, the umbrella organisation for British Unitarians. The chapel was granted Grade II* Listed status in 1966.

Atherton railway station serves the town of Atherton, Greater Manchester, England, and is the main station on the line between Wigan and Manchester on the Manchester to Southport Line, and according to Strategic Rail Authority figures is the busiest station on the line (excluding Wigan and Manchester). The station is located 11¾ miles (19 km) north west of Manchester Victoria with regular Northern Trains services to Kirkby and Southport. Atherton is the nearest station to Leigh, one of the largest towns in Britain without its own railway station. The 582 bus service provides a frequent service to Leigh and Bolton, a connection not overly promoted by Transport for Greater Manchester. Although it lies some distance from the centre of the town, the present Atherton station was originally named Atherton Central to differentiate it from Atherton Bag Lane (on the line from Bolton Great Moor Street to Kenyon Junction) which was closed in 1954 and Howe Bridge on the line between Wigan North Western and Manchester Exchange.

Fred Longworth High School is a coeducational secondary school with academy status located in Tyldesley in the English county of Greater Manchester.It was established as a girls' school by Lancashire County Council in 1964. The school became comprehensive in 1976 and was awarded Arts College status in 1998. Previously a community school administered by Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, Fred Longworth High School converted to academy status on 1 September 2011. However the school continues to coordinate with Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council for admissions. Fred Longworth High School offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. As well as for use for pupils, some of the school facilities are also available for hire to the local community.

Atherton Laburnum Rovers Football Club is a football club based in Atherton, Greater Manchester, England. Full members of the Lancashire County FA, they are currently members of the North West Counties League Division One North and play at Crilly Park.

Atherton High School (formerly Atherton Community School & Hesketh Fletcher CofE High School) is a mixed Secondary school and sixth form located in Atherton in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It is formally designated as a Christian faith school. The school opened in 2012 for 11-year-old (Year 7) pupils, but expanded over the next few years to become a full secondary school. The school's sixth form opened in 2013.The school was the first free school to open in Greater Manchester, and was established after the Chapel Street and Atherton Community Consortium had campaigned for the opening of a new secondary school in the Atherton area. In 2020 the school was transferred to the Education Partnership Trust and was renamed Atherton High School.
