King's Church Selby

St James' Church is a parish church in Selby, a town in North Yorkshire, in England. The church was paid for by James Audus. He may have had a role in its design, which is also ascribed to Newstead and Low. It was completed in December 1867, and was given its own parish later in the month. In May 1944, a Handley Page Halifax crashed into the spire, the crew and eight people in nearby houses being killed. The tower was rebuilt, but the spire was not. The building was grade II listed in 1980. The church is built of stone and has a slate roof with tile cresting. It consists of a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, north and south porches, north and south transepts, a chancel with a vestry, and a west tower. The tower has five stages, buttresses, string courses, an arcade of four pointed arches in the fourth stage with circular windows above, three-light bell openings, and a stepped embattled parapet with corner crocketed pinnacles. Inside, there is a wood and brass lectern described by Historic England as "exceptional", a marble reredos, extensive 19th-century woodwork, and an iron communion rail.

The Battle of Selby occurred on 11 April 1644 in North Yorkshire during the First English Civil War. In the battle, the Parliamentarians led by Lord Fairfax attacked and captured the strategic Royalist garrison of Selby under the command of John Belasyse.

Selby Town Hall is a municipal building in York Street in Selby, North Yorkshire, England. The structure, which was built as a Methodist chapel, is now the home of Selby Town Council.

Abbot's Staith is a historic building in Selby, a town in North Yorkshire in England. The building was constructed in about 1500, probably as a warehouse. It is generally thought to have been constructed on behalf of the monks of Selby Abbey. The Oxford Handbook of Later Medieval Archaeology in Britain describes it as "Selby Abbey's quay and timber yard". Writing in the 1750s, Richard Pocock stated that "near the river is a large store house of hewn stone, which served for their cloth before the Aire was made navigable". In 1911, the building was purchased by the Woodhead family, which used it for their seed business. However, it was disused from about 1990, and fell into poor repair. In 2015, the Save the Abbot's Staith group began fundraising to restore the building, for community use. In 2019, Historic England supported the cost of roof repairs.The building is two storeys high, H-shaped in plan, and is largely built of limestone. The north side of the upper storey of the central section was rebuilt in brick in about 1700, possibly replacing timber-framing. The southern side of the upper storey of the east wing was rebuilt in brick in the 19th century. Five first floor windows on the south side are original, as are two doors on the north side, with their original ironwork. Inside, the building is divided by thick stone walls.The building is grade II* listed and is also a scheduled monument.

Corunna House is a historic building in Selby, in North Yorkshire, England. The house lies on Water Lane, facing the River Ouse. It was built in the early 18th century, before 1724, for Richard Pearson. It had a variety of owners until the 1850s, when it was converted into the Ousegate School, which closed in 1926. It was then named "Corunna House", due to a purported connection with John Moore of La Coruna. Nikolaus Pevsner described the building as "the handsomest house in Selby". It was Grade II* listed in 1952.The house is built of brown brick, with a pantile roof. It has brick quoins and a wooden cornice. It is eight bays wide, with the third bay coming slightly further forward, and incorporating the main entrance. This has a rectangular fanlight and large hood above. In the middle, there is a carriage entrance, which may be a later creation. The windows are sashes. The right-hand side had a 19th-century shop front, which has since been replaced with brick and two further sash windows.

Selby Almshouses are a historic building in Selby, a town in North Yorkshire, in England. The building, comprising ten houses in three ranges around a courtyard, was constructed to house poor widows or elderly people. They were designed and funded by James Audus and were completed in 1833. The building was grade II listed in 1980, and is now run by the Audus charity. The almshouses are built of brown brick with hipped slate roofs. They have two storeys, three bays on the east side, and four on the west and south sides. The windows are casements with channelled voussoirs. In the middle of the south range is a low tower with an embattled parapet and crocketed corner pinnacles. It contains an entrance with a pointed head, a moulded surround, a crocketed ogee head, and an elaborate finial. Above the entrance is an inscribed and dated plaque.

Selby Toll Bridge is one of three swing bridges in the town of Selby, North Yorkshire, England. A timber bridge over the River Ouse in the town was opened in c. 1793 to replace a ferry crossing that had existed since Medieval times. The bridge provided a connection between the West and East Ridings of Yorkshire across the River Ouse, and became the furthest downstream public bridge crossing over the river until 1929, when the Boothferry Bridge was built. The moving section of the original bridge used ball-bearings and cog wheels; the bridge is believed to be the first in the world to use ball-bearings. The replacement 1970s bridge, now only carries the A19 road as the A63 bypass was opened in 2004.

Selby railway station is a Grade II listed station which serves the market town of Selby in North Yorkshire, England. The original terminus station was opened in 1834 for the Leeds and Selby Railway. The Hull and Selby Railway extended the line in 1840 and a new station was built, with the old station becoming a goods shed. The station was rebuilt in 1873 and 1891; the 1891 rebuilding was required due to the replacement of the swing bridge over the River Ouse at the same time. The area around the station is a junction for a number of lines, including the former East Coast Main Line route between Doncaster and York, the Selby to Driffield Line (1848) and the Selby to Goole Line (1910). After 1983, with the opening of the Selby Diversion, Selby is no longer on the East Coast Main Line. As of 2014, lines lead from Selby to Leeds, Hull and Doncaster. The station is managed by TransPennine Express and receives regional trains operated by Northern and TransPennine Express, as well as Hull-London services operated by Hull Trains and London North Eastern Railway.

Selby Town Football Club is an English football club based in Selby, North Yorkshire, founded in 1919. They play in the Northern Counties East League Division One. The club's traditional rivals are Goole (with whom they play an annual match, for the right to win the Eric Lawton Cup) and Tadcaster Albion.

Selby (Brayton Gates) was the initial, temporary southern terminus of the short Cawood, Wistow and Selby Light Railway (CW&SLR) in North Yorkshire, England. The line was connected to the North Eastern Railway (NER) nearby. The station is sometimes referred to as "Brayton Gates" or plain "Selby", though it was around a mile from the much larger Selby station.
