The Indian River is a 12.8-mile-long (20.6 km) river in western New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Mascoma River, which in turn flows to the Connecticut River and ultimately Long Island Sound. The Indian River rises in the southern corner of the town of Dorchester and flows south in a broad valley to the west of Mount Cardigan. At the town center of Canaan, the river turns west and shortly ends at the Mascoma River. For its south-flowing portion, the Indian River is followed by New Hampshire Route 118. From Canaan to the Mascoma River, U.S. Route 4 is close by.

The Northern Recreational Rail Trail, also known as the Northern Rail Trail, is a 58-mile (93 km) multi-use rail trail in western New Hampshire, USA, running from Lebanon to Boscawen. It uses the right-of-way of the Boston and Maine Railroad's former Northern Line, which was acquired by the State of New Hampshire in 1996. The trail is managed by the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails.

Canaan is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 3,794 at the 2020 census. It is the location of Mascoma State Forest. Canaan is home to the Cardigan Mountain School, the town's largest employer. The main village of the town, where 442 people resided at the 2020 census, is defined as the Canaan census-designated place (CDP), and is located at the junction of U.S. Route 4 with New Hampshire Route 118.

Mascoma Valley Regional High School (MVRHS) is a public secondary school in Canaan, New Hampshire. Surrounding towns that attend MVRHS are Grafton, Enfield, Orange, and Dorchester. The facility, opened in 1963, is located on Royal Road, off of U.S. Route 4. It is adjacent to the Indian River School, which houses grades five through eight. The school colors are Purple and Gold; the mascot is a panther and teams are known as “The Royals.” On March 11, 2014, district voters approved a $21.5 million renovation. The plan, which includes improved parking and access, efficiency upgrades, a new auditorium, library, band room, art room, expanded laboratories, and certain life safety upgrades (a sprinkler system), garnered nearly 63% of the vote (60% was necessary for the bond to pass). Previous attempts to either construct an entirely new high school or to renovate the existing structure had failed, including 2013's attempt which failed with 59+% of the vote. Renovations to the existing building commenced in 2015 and were completed over the summer in 2016. The school opened the new addition on September 6, 2016.

Mascoma State Forest is an area of forested land in Canaan in Grafton County, New Hampshire, on the west side of the Mascoma River. As of 2007, the tract covers 216 acres (87 ha). The forest borders the 900-acre Bear Pond Natural Area. Mascoma State Forest is managed by the state of New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands.

The Canaan Meetinghouse is a historic meeting house on Canaan Street in Canaan, New Hampshire. Built in 1794, with some subsequent alterations, it is a good example of a Federal period meeting house, serving as a center of town civic and religious activity for many years. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and included in the Canaan Street Historic District the following year. The building is still owned by the town, and is available for rent.

The Canaan Street Historic District encompasses the historic original town center of Canaan, New Hampshire. It is a basically linear district, running along Canaan Street roughly from Prospect Hill Road in the north to Moss Flower Lane in the south. The town flourished first as a stagecoach stop, and then as a resort colony in the late 19th century. The historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It included 60 contributing buildings.

Canaan Street Lake is a 291-acre (118 ha) water body located in Grafton County in western New Hampshire, United States, in the town of Canaan. It is part of the Mascoma River watershed, a tributary of the Connecticut River. A peninsula on the north side of the lake is occupied by the Cardigan Mountain School. The west side of the lake is bordered by the Canaan Street Historic District.

Cardigan Mountain School, also called Cardigan or CMS, for short, is an all-boys independent boarding school for grades six through nine, located on 62 Alumni Drive, Canaan, New Hampshire, United States. It was founded in 1945 on land provided by Dartmouth College. It is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), the Junior Boarding Schools Association (JBSA), and the Independent Schools Association of Northern New England (ISANNE). It is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Crystal Lake is a 401-acre (1.6 km2) water body located in Grafton County in western New Hampshire, United States, in the town of Enfield. Crystal Lake is part of the Mascoma River watershed. The lake contains one small island: Oliver Island. The lake is classified as a cold- and warmwater fishery, with observed species including rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, horned pout, black crappie, and rock bass.The lake is one of eight in New Hampshire which historically had a naturally occurring native lake trout population. These fish have since been extirpated from the lake.
