UC Merced School of Engineering

On November 4, 2015, 18-year-old student Faisal Mohammad stabbed and injured four people with a hunting knife on the campus of the University of California, Merced, in Merced, California. He was then shot dead by university police.

The University of California, Merced (UC Merced or colloquially, UCM) is a public land-grant research university in Merced, California. It is one of the ten campuses in the University of California (UC) system. Established in 2005, UC Merced is the newest campus within the UC system. The primary campus is located around five miles north of Merced and sits adjacent to Lake Yosemite. The main campus is around 1,026 acres (415 ha) in size, and total land owned by the university amounts to around 8,195 acres (3,316 ha) including large areas of preserve land. Large swaths of almond orchards and natural grasslands surround the university. The forming of UC Merced was initiated to address the large population growth of the Central Valley and the San Joaquin Valley, and to make higher education more accessible for students in the region. UCM is also being developed keeping in mind future growth projections for the UC System. UC Merced consists of three undergraduate, graduate and professional schools with a medical school in the works. The upcoming medical school is being established in partnership with UCSF and UCSF Fresno. UC Merced offers over 60 undergraduate degrees and 18 graduate and professional degrees, and roughly 8,000 undergraduates and 700 graduate students are enrolled at UCM as of Fall 2023. The university is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity", and had $45.9 million in research and development expenditures in 2021.UC Merced is one of the largest employers in Merced County, and contributes about $1.7 billion to the economy of the San Joaquin Valley. Every building on the campus is LEED certified with the majority being certified gold. The UC Merced Golden Bobcats currently compete in the NAIA as members of the Cal Pac. From 2025, the University plans to move up to the NCAA Division II. Additionally, of the current faculty, one has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

Lake Yosemite is an artificial freshwater lake located approximately 5 mi (8.0 km) east of Merced, California, in the rolling Sierra Foothills. UC Merced is situated approximately 0.5 mi (0.80 km) south of Lake Yosemite. The university is bounded by the lake on one side, and two canals (Fairfield Canal and Le Grand Canal) run through the campus.

The Kaehler–Rector House is a historic house located at 408 W. 25th St. in Merced, California. Built in the early 1890s, the house was designed by architect Louis Wegner in the Queen Anne style. The house's design includes a corner tower with a conical roof, a veranda extending to the front and east sides of the house, and a complex roof design that includes both gabled and hipped sections. A 1905 history of the San Joaquin Valley called the house "one of the finest in Merced County."George Kaehler, the house's first owner, was a major liquor distributor in the San Joaquin Valley. In 1903, he sold the house to Judge E. N. Rector, a Merced County Superior Court judge, who lived in the house until his 1941 death.The Kaehler–Rector House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 1982.

Merced station is an intercity rail station located in Merced, California, United States. The station is served by seven daily round trips of the San Joaquins and is a transfer point between trains and Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS) buses serving Yosemite National Park. Merced station has side platforms adjacent to the tracks of the BNSF Railway Stockton Subdivision.The Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) opened through Merced in 1872, followed by the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad in 1896. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) purchased the latter railroad in 1899 and erected a larger station in 1917. Service on both the SP and AT&SF ended in 1971; Amtrak San Joaquin service began on the AT&SF line in 1974. In 2000, the city replaced the 1917-built station with a modern facility of similar design.

The Leggett House in Merced, California, also known as Queen Anne Inn, is a historic house located at 352 W. 22nd St. in Merced, California. The house was built in the Queen Anne style of Victorian architecture. Its most prominent feature is the Witch's Cap on its roof, a cone-shaped turret with eight scalloped hips. The home's design also includes a steep shingle roof, gables on the porch and sides of the house, and horizontal shiplap and fish scale shingle siding on its first and second floors respectively. E. M. Herron, a local rancher, built the home in 1884; he later sold it to pioneer and Merced postmaster Thomas H. Leggett, who operated a jewelry store in the house's parlor.The Leggett House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 25, 1979. The Thomas H. Leggett House, another house in Merced owned by Leggett, is also listed on the National Register.
