Potter Brompton is a small village in the English county of North Yorkshire, on the A64 road from Malton to Scarborough. The village is situated just a few hundred yards off the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail and lies within the parish of Ganton. The population statistics for the village area included in those for the whole parish of Ganton.It was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. The village was part of the Ryedale district between 1974 and 2023. It is now administered by North Yorkshire Council. Potter Brompton is mentioned in the Domesday Book as having 29 ploughlands, but no villagers. The land originally belonged to Earl Morcar, but after the Conquest, the land was forfeited to William the Conqueror.The village is well served by public transport; it has an hourly bus service through the day on the Yorkshire Coastliner route between Leeds, York, Malton and Scarborough.

Wykeham Abbey is a Grade II* listed country house in Wykeham, North Yorkshire, England. It has been the seat of the Viscounts Downe since the early 20th century.

Sawdon railway station was situated on the North Eastern Railway's Pickering to Seamer branch line in North Yorkshire, England. It served the village of Brompton-by-Sawdon and to a lesser extent Sawdon itself. The station was named Sawdon to distinguish it from an existing station called Brompton (on the Leeds Northern Railway), near Northallerton, also in North Yorkshire. The station opened to passenger traffic on 1 May 1882, and the last trains ran on 3 June 1950. Sawdon was furnished with one platform, which had the station building on the northern side of the running line, and a small goods yard beyond the station building with an east facing connection to the main railway line. The goods yard had a crane capable of lifting 1-tonne (1.1-ton), and was equipped to handle a variety of goods including live stock.The station has been restored completely, as holiday accommodation.

The River Hertford is a river in Yorkshire in the north of England. It is part of the River Derwent catchment area. The River Hertford starts close to Muston near the seaside town of Filey. Despite being only 1.2 miles (2 km) from the North Sea (to its eastern side) the river flows westwards for 9.9 miles (16 km) into the River Derwent at Haybridge, North Yorkshire, near Wykeham. It has been referred to as a 'backward-flowing river' because it flows away from the sea. Ekwall suggests the name derives from a ford over the river, which became the name by back formation.Star Carr, a Mesolithic archaeological site, lies close to the river. Star Carr was on the edge of a nine-thousand year old Stone Age wetland known as, 'Lake Flixton' (near Flixton). This area is now known as the River Hertford Floodplain and extends from Muston in the east to Ganton in the west.Originally the river meandered, but the Muston & Yedingham Drainage Act 1800 resulted in the River Derwent and the River Hertford being straightened by cutting a new course for each. The Hertford was hand dug during the industrial revolution (local stories hold that the men who dug the new channel were prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars).The River Hertford catchment suffers from the discharges of three sewage plants at Folkton, Hunmanby and Seamer. This not only affects the quality of the river but also that of the Derwent downstream of Haybridge.

Wykeham Priory was a nunnery in Wykeham, North Yorkshire, England. It was established between 1140 and 1160 and was destroyed by fire during the reign of Edward III.In the mid-18th century, Wykeham Abbey was built on the site of the former priory.

Ganton has been widely rated as one of the best golf courses in England and one of the very best in Yorkshire. It has also been rated in the top-100 courses in the world by Golf Digest.

The 2003 Walker Cup, the 39th Walker Cup Match, was played on 6 and 7 September 2003, at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England. The event was won by Great Britain and Ireland 12½ to 11½, marking the first time that Great Britain & Ireland had three consecutive wins.

Ganton railway station was a minor railway station serving the village of Ganton, North Yorkshire, England, on the York to Scarborough Line and was opened on 5 July 1845 by the York and North Midland Railway. In order to speed up traffic on the line, most of the intermediate stations including Ganton were closed to passenger traffic in 1930. Accordingly, it closed to passenger traffic on 22 September 1930, and was finally closed to goods traffic in 1964.

Brompton is a civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England, containing the villages of Brompton-by-Sawdon and Sawdon. The village of Brompton-by-Sawdon is about 8 miles (13 km) west of Scarborough itself, close to the North York Moors and on the A170 road. It lies on the northern edge of the Vale of Pickering, with the village of Sherburn 3 miles to the south. According to the 2011 UK census, Brompton parish had a population of 573, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 516.Under 'Brompton', the sign on entry to the village reads 'The Birthplace Of Aviation' owing to the long-term residence of pioneering aeronautical engineer Sir George Cayley. Brompton has been the seat of the Cayley family since the Middle Ages, and Sir George Cayley was buried in the graveyard of All Saints' Church in 1857. The poet William Wordsworth married Mary Hutchinson at All Saints' Church in the village, on 4 October 1802. A copy of the wedding certificate can be seen in All Saints Church. Low Hall, off Barnard Lane, is the former manor house of the village; the current building dates from the 17th century and is Grade II listed.Brompton Hall is a Georgian town house in the village centre, now a special school.

The 8th Ryder Cup Matches were held 16–17 September 1949, at Ganton Golf Club in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. The United States team won the competition by a score of seven to five.Still recovering from his near-fatal automobile accident in February, Ben Hogan was the non-playing captain of the U.S. team. He returned as a competitor for a final time in 1951. The U.S. team's decision to bring a half ton of meat to England made headlines.Hogan objected to the depth of the grooves on some British players' irons, and they were modified before being allowed into the competition. Britain led three to one after the first day, but the U.S. won six of eight matches in singles on Saturday to keep the Cup.The Ganton course measured 6,632 yards (6,064 m) for this Ryder Cup.
