South Library (Islington)

The former Carlton Cinema (and then Mecca Bingo) is an Art deco Grade II* listed building, located at 161–169 Essex Road, Islington, London. It was completed in 1930 as a cine-variety theatre with a capacity of 2,226 seats. Architect George Coles decided for an Egyptian style facade dressed in multi-coloured Hathernware tiles. The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in November 1922 influenced the Art Deco style and the buildings erected in that period, particularly cinemas and theatres. Inside, the building is mainly Empire style, with Egyptian decorations in the foyer, whilst the auditorium has a French Renaissance style. The Carlton Cinema was taken over by Associated British Cinemas Ltd. (ABC) in February 1935. It was renamed ABC in 1962. Then it was the Carlton cinema during the 60's which for the younger generation meant Saturday morning pictures. The building was then converted into a bingo hall which continued for almost 35 years as the Mecca Bingo Club, until closing in March 2007.It was purchased by an evangelical Christian church Resurrection Manifestations in 2013, who planned to partially reopen it as a cinema, also converting the former cafe area into a second screen. It was reopened in 2015 as Gracepoint, a 900 capacity venue available for hire and an active church.The façade and foyer of the building appear as the Roxy Cinema in episode 2 series 5 of Endeavour, titled Cartouche.

The Old Queen's Head is a pub on Essex Road in Islington, London N1. Its shopfront is scheduled as "to be retained" by Islington Council. Since 2006 The Old Queens Head has been a part of The Columbo Group, owned by Steve Ball and Riz Shaikh. It is a Grade II listed building.

Essex Road is a National Rail station in Canonbury in Greater London, England, and is on the Northern City Line between Old Street and Highbury & Islington, 1 mile 59 chains (2.8 km) down the line from Moorgate, and is in Travelcard Zone 2. The station is at the junction of Essex Road, Canonbury Road and New North Road, with the present entrance on Canonbury Road. Operated by Great Northern, it is the only deep-level underground station in London served exclusively by National Rail trains. Between 1933 and 1975 the station was operated as part of the London Underground, as a short branch of the Northern line. Between 1922 and 1948 the station name was Canonbury & Essex Road. The name reverted to the original form in 1948.

Little Angel Theatre is a puppet theatre for children and their families based in the London Borough of Islington.The 100-seat theatre, a former Temperance hall, was opened on 24 November 1961, by founders John and Lyndie Wright with a performance of The Wild Night Of The Witches. As well as an internationally recognised theatre with productions touring throughout the UK and across the globe, Little Angel Theatre works with its local community to tackle barriers to arts engagement so all can benefit and enjoy the art form of puppetry. Puppeteers who have entertained here include Sarah Burgess who has created several roles for CBeebies.The theatre's creative learning department work with schools and youth and community groups, running a wide variety of participation activities. Little Angel Theatre is a registered charity.

City of London Academy Islington (COLAI, formerly Islington Green School) is an 11–18 mixed, secondary school and sixth form with academy status in Islington, Greater London, England. It was established in 1966 and adopted its present name after becoming an academy in September 2008.Its sixth form opened in September 2010 and is jointly sponsored by the City of London Corporation and City, University of London.

Tibberton Square is a small garden square in Islington, North London. It is bounded on two sides by terraces of Georgian houses which are Grade II listed buildings. Thomas Wontner, a wealthy hat manufacturer, built the square on his own garden between 1823 and 1828.

The Church Missionary Society Training College in Islington, north London was founded in 1820 to prepare Anglican missionaries of the Church Missionary Society for work overseas. Prior to the establishment of the College the CMS missionaries received their training under Thomas Scott.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is the historic parish church of Islington, in the Church of England Diocese of London. The present parish is a compact area centered on Upper Street between Angel and Highbury Corner, bounded to the west by Liverpool Road, and to the east by Essex Road/Canonbury Road. The church is a Grade II listed building.The churchyard was enlarged in 1793. With the rapid growth of Islington, it became full and closed for burials in 1853. It was laid out as a public garden of one and a half acres in 1885.

Granita was a restaurant at number 127 Upper Street in Islington. It was founded in the early 1990s by Vicky Leffman. Its decor was bright and light with a Scandinavian style of pale wood. Its cuisine was modern British, fusing classic dishes such as mussels with exotic ingredients such as lemongrass.It was the setting for the Blair-Brown deal between the then shadow Home Secretary Tony Blair and the then shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, in 1994.The restaurant was sold to Hüseyin Özer's Sofra group in 2002 but then closed in 2003, being replaced by a Tex-Mex restaurant called Desperados. When Desperados moved to number 67 in 2013, the premises was then converted to become an estate agent.

Upper Street is the main street of the Islington district of inner north London, and carries the A1 road. It begins at the junction of the A1 and Liverpool Road, continuing on from Islington High Street which runs from the crossroads at Pentonville Road/City Road and runs roughly northwards from outside the main entrance to Angel Underground station, then past the Business Design Centre, then splits at Islington Green (where Essex Road, formerly named Lower Street, branches off), then past The Screen On The Green cinema, past Islington Town Hall, ending at Highbury & Islington tube station on Highbury corner, where the A1 carries on as Holloway Road. It contains many fashionable shops, pubs, restaurants and theatres.

Angel Recording Studios Limited (also referred to as Angel Studios) was a British recording studio based in the eponymous recording and mixing complex in Islington, London. The company was incorporated by James Warren Sylvester de Wolfe on 5 December 1978. After ownership of the property transferred to third parties, the facility was closed at the end of 2019. The building was originally constructed as a Congregational chapel in 1888, and is now Grade II listed. The premises were acquired by library music specialists De Wolfe Music in the late 1970s and opened in 1982. Since then, the studio has been used to record both commercially successful work such as Adele's 2011 album 21 and numerous classical recordings

Islington was a civil parish and metropolitan borough in London, England. It was an ancient parish within the county of Middlesex, and formed part of The Metropolis from 1855. The parish was transferred to the County of London in 1889 and became a metropolitan borough in 1900. It was amalgamated with the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury to form the London Borough of Islington in Greater London in 1965.
