On 25 August 2025, protests began in Indonesia as part of a larger civil unrest that began in early 2025 over economic frustrations and a proposed hike in housing subsidies for members of parliament. The protests, which were largely concentrated around the capital Jakarta, grew in intensity and spread nationwide following the killing of Affan Kurniawan, a motorcycle taxi driver who was run over by a Brimob police tactical vehicle on 28 August during a larger violent crackdown on civil dissent. Protesters initially demanded the House of Representatives reverse its subsidy schemes and penalize its members who made insensitive statements, as well as pass the Confiscation of Assets Act for lawmakers convicted of corruption. Student-led protesters expanded their demands to include total reform of the Indonesian National Police and resignation of the chief of police, Listyo Sigit Prabowo. Demonstrations in other cities also expressing anger at Kurniawan's death and adding local demands. In several cities such as Makassar and Surabaya, multiple government buildings were torched. Houses associated with or belonging to members of parliament were also looted and robbed.

It only takes one minute to travel between these two stations. BNI City railway station, a station that serves Soekarno–Hatta Airport Rail Link exclusively, is wedged between these two station. Regarding the discourse on closing this station as a result of the operation of the Sudirman Baru Station (BNI City), KAI Commuter has denied this discourse. Anne Purba as the VP Corporate Secretary KAI Commuter said that Karet Station is not closed and would still be used to serve KRL users. Related to this, KAI Commuter operates the station to divide traffic density by up to 40%

Palmerah railway station

Palmerah Station (PLM) is a railway station located in Jalan Tentara Pelajar, Gelora, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, near the Palmerah market. The station is located in the altitude of +13 meters above sea level, and only serves KRL Commuterline. Palmerah Station was rebuilt in 2013–2014 and features a new two-storey station building. The old building was preserved and the new building straddles above it.The Palmerah market and Parliament building is located adjacent to the station. The station services the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and the surrounding sports complex.
