Veterans Memorial Bridge (Chattanooga)

The Hunter Museum of American Art is an art museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The museum's collections include works representing the Hudson River School, 19th century genre painting, American Impressionism, the Ashcan School, early modernism, regionalism, and post-World War II modern and contemporary art. The building itself represents three distinct architectural stages: the original 1904 classical revival mansion designed by Abram Garfield, the son of president James A. Garfield, which has housed the museum since its opening in 1952, a brutalist addition built in 1975, and a 2005 addition designed by Randall Stout which now serves as the entrance to the museum.

Built in 1890, the 2,376-foot-long (724 m) Walnut Street Bridge connects Chattanooga, Tennessee's downtown with North Chattanooga. The bridge's main spans are pin-connected Pennsylvania through truss spans. The top chord of these truss spans are configured in five sections, making the spans similar to the Camelback truss design. The bridge is historically significant as an extremely long and old example of its type; according to the Historic American Engineering Record: "The bridge was apparently the first non-military highway bridge across the Tennessee River."

On March 19, 1906, Ed Johnson, a young African American man, was murdered by a lynch mob in his home town of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He had been sentenced to death for the rape of Nevada Taylor, but Justice John Marshall Harlan of the United States Supreme Court had issued a stay of execution. To prevent delay or avoidance of execution, a mob broke into the jail where Johnson was held, and abducted and lynched him from the Walnut Street Bridge. During Johnson's incarceration there was much public interest in the case, and many people, including court officers, feared a possible lynch attempt. The day after his murder saw widespread strikes among the black community in Chattanooga. Two thousand people attended his funeral the following day.After the murder, President Theodore Roosevelt made it his goal to have the members of the mob imprisoned by directing the Secret Service to participate in the investigation. Hamilton County Sheriff Joseph F. Shipp, who had arrested Johnson, was found guilty of contempt of court in United States v. Shipp, the only criminal trial ever held by the United States Supreme Court. Johnson, while in jail, made a Christian profession and was baptized. He publicly forgave those who were about to execute him. On the top of Johnson's tombstone are his final words "God Bless you all. I AM A Innocent Man." On the bottom is written "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord". Johnson was the second African American to be lynched on Walnut Street Bridge. Alfred Blount was the first, thirteen years earlier, in 1893.

Girls Preparatory School, or GPS, is an all-female college preparatory school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1906 by Grace Eliza McCallie, Tommie Payne Duffy, and Eula Lea Jarnagin. GPS enrolls students in grades 6-12. These students are taught by GPS's 66 faculty members, over 80% of whom hold advanced degrees. Since 2006, Girls Preparatory School has won 20 state championships in various sports. In addition, the school has graduated 49 National Merit Semifinalists in the past 13 years. For the 2019–20 school year, GPS enrolled 560 girls from 28 zip codes, with 210 in Middle School and 350 in Upper School. Its brother school, The McCallie School, was founded a year earlier by McCallie's brothers. GPS's Interim Head of School is Dr. Kirk Walker, former headmaster at The McCallie School.

Ross's Landing in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is the last site of the Cherokee's 61-year occupation of Chattanooga and is considered to be the embarkation point of the Cherokee removal on the Trail of Tears. Ross's Landing Riverfront Park memorializes the location, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Coolidge Park is a park located on the North Shore of Chattanooga, Tennessee along the Tennessee River. It has an interactive water fountain, rock climbing, a pavilion, picnic amenities, a military memorial, and a 100-year old restored antique carousel. There are also docking facilities. It is also near the Walnut Street Bridge. It is also close to the city’s entertainment and art districts. It serves as a venue for concerts, festivals, fundraisers, and special events. The park is also a part of the Tennessee Riverwalk, a 13-mile public waterfront greenway that follows the Tennessee River.In 2006, a circular landscape of trees representing the sister cities of Chattanooga called the Peace Grove was added to the park. There is also the Learning Walk, a one thousand linear foot-interpretive trail.The Coolidge Park Carousel is a Dentzel antique carousel from 1894. It has 52 hard-carved animals, a calliope band organ, and gold leaf benches. It is available for reservations.The park was established through the work of HGOR and the River Front Development Committee. The goal was to have an open space area, stabilize the riverfront area, and increase connectivity with a walkway system, as part of the Tennessee Riverwalk. The park was opened in 1999. The park was named after Charles H. Coolidge, a Medal of Honor recipient who fought in World War II.

McKenzie Arena (also called "The Roundhouse") is the primary basketball arena for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) in Chattanooga in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It replaced Maclellan Gymnasium, a 4,177-seat gymnasium now used for women's volleyball and wrestling. Originally called UTC Arena, it was renamed McKenzie Arena on February 21, 2000 in honor of athletic supporters Toby and Brenda McKenzie of Cleveland, Tennessee. The arena opened on October 8, 1982. It was designed by Campbell & Associates Architects with David J. Moore as the on-site architect/construction administrator. The first season included a visit by then defending NCAA national champion North Carolina Tar Heels, a team which included Michael Jordan, Brad Daugherty, and Sam Perkins. The arena hosted the 2005, 2009, and 2011 men's Southern Conference basketball tournament and the 2005, 2009, and 2011 women's tournament championship game. In addition to basketball, the arena has hosted many ice shows, rodeos, circuses, truck rallies, and wrestling events. The arena is also home to UTC's department of intercollegiate athletics. The arena also hosted the 2006 TSSAA State Wrestling tournament. The arena can also accommodate concerts, with a 64-by-48-foot (20 by 15 m) stage and capacities of 7,463 for side-stage shows, 9,107 end-stage and 11,557 center-stage shows; ice shows, circuses and even monster truck rallies (arena floor dimensions are 151'6" by 181'9"). The arena hosted WCW Halloween Havoc in 1991 and the thirteenth WWF In Your House pay-per-view In Your House 13: Final Four in 1997. It also hosted Clash of the Champions IV, the first Clash of Champions event produced by WCW. World Wrestling Entertainment continues to hold matches at the arena. In 2011, Winter Guard International made its first trip to McKenzie for the first annual WGI MidSouth Percussion Championship. Terrell Owens also hosted his own induction ceremony into the Pro Football Hall of Fame here on August 4, 2018.

The Market Street Bridge, officially referred to as the John Ross Bridge, is a bascule bridge that spans the Tennessee River between downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the Northshore District. It carries North Market Street (formerly designated as U.S. Route 127), and was named in honor of Cherokee Chief John Ross. The bridge was completed in 1917 at a cost of $1.1 million. In the mid-1970s, the southern terminus of US 127 was moved several miles north to the intersection of Dayton Boulevard and Signal Mountain Boulevard in the nearby suburb of Red Bank. The bridge has concrete arch spans flanking a center draw span, which is a steel truss with double-leaf Scherzer rolling lift bascule mechanism. The double-leaf bascule lift span stands approximately 70 feet above the water. At the time of its completion in 1917, the 300-foot (91 m) main span was the longest rolling-lift bascule span in the world. Vehicular traffic originally included streetcars, but streetcar service across the bridge ended in the 1930s. The bridge was formally renamed the Chief John Ross Bridge in 1950.The bridge closed in 2005 for a renovation, but reopened on August 4, 2007, ahead of its originally scheduled September completion date.The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 2010.Four times per year, the bridge is closed for a brief inspection to test its hinge mechanism, as mandated by the US Coast Guard.

Wiley Memorial United Methodist Church, now known as Bethlehem Wiley United Methodist Church, is a historic church at 504 Lookout Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee, affiliated with the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. The church's site was an important community center in the early years of Ross's Landing, before it came to be called Chattanooga. During the American Civil War, an earlier church building on the site was used as a military hospital and prison by the Confederate Army and later as a Union Army military prison. The building incurred major damage during the 1863 Battle of Chattanooga. In 1867 it was purchased for use by the first African Methodist Episcopal congregation in East Tennessee.The church's current brick building, completed in 1886–1887, replaced a building that was destroyed by arson. It was rebuilt though the cooperative efforts of the congregation's members.The city declared the building unsafe for occupancy in 1978. Money was raised to restore the historic building. Following restoration, which included installation of a new roof, sandblasting the exterior, and uncovering some of the interior woodwork, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. After the 1979 National Register listing, city officials allowed the congregation to resume its use of the church for worship.

The Tennessee Aquarium is a non-profit public aquarium located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. It opened in 1992 on the banks of the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga, with a major expansion added in 2005. The aquarium, which has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1993, is home to more than 12,000 animals representing almost 800 species.More than 20 million people have visited the facility, with the twenty-millionth visitor arriving in March 2013. It is consistently recognized as one of the country's top public aquariums.

The Chattanooga Car Barns is a three-building complex located at 301 Market St. in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was built in 1887 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.The three buildings include "offices facing Third Street, a fifteen-track car barn, and a bus fueling and storage facility. The offices and car barn were designed by R.H. Hunt, Architects."

The Hamilton County Courthouse in Chattanooga, Tennessee, designed by architect R.H. Hunt, was constructed in 1912. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.It is three stories upon a basement.A statue of Confederate general Alexander P. Stewart was unveiled on the courthouse grounds on April 22, 1919 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
