Ashworth Moor Reservoir is an upland water supply reservoir amongst the Pennines in Greater Manchester, England close to the A680 road between Rochdale and Edenfield. It is south of Scout Moor Wind Farm.

The Cheesden Valley is a valley in the Heywood area of Greater Manchester, England. It runs on a north–south alignment between Bury and Rochdale in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale. Cheesden Brook runs through the valley, joining with Naden Brook to eventually run into the River Roch near Heywood. During the industrial age the valley became a centre of cotton production dependent on running water. The valley is now a conservation area.

Scout Moor Wind Farm is the second largest onshore wind farm in England. The wind farm, which was built for Peel Wind Power Ltd, produces electricity from 26 Nordex N80 wind turbines. It has a total nameplate capacity of 65 MW of electricity, providing 154,000 MW·h per year; enough to serve the average needs of 40,000 homes. The site occupies 1,347 acres (545 ha) of open moorland between Edenfield, Rawtenstall and Rochdale, and is split between the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale in northern Greater Manchester and the Borough of Rossendale in south-eastern Lancashire. The turbines are visible from as far away as south Manchester, 15–20 miles (24–32 km) away.A protest group was formed to resist the proposed construction, and attracted support from the botanist and environmental campaigner David Bellamy. Despite the opposition, planning permission was granted in 2005 and construction began in 2007. Although work on the project was hampered by harsh weather, difficult terrain, and previous mining activity, the wind farm was officially opened on 25 September 2008 after "years of controversy", at a cost of £50 million. In 2012 Peel Energy sold its 50% share in the facility to Munich Re's asset management division MEAG. The other 50% holding was also purchased by MEAG from HgCapital Renewable Power Partners.

Birtle is a hamlet within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies in the Cheesden Valley, set amongst the Pennines. Historically a part of Lancashire, Birtle is archaically referred to as Bircle or Birkle, which means Birch Hill. Together with neighbouring Bamford, it formed the civil parish of Birtle-with-Bamford (also known as Birtle-cum-Bamford). It was in Middleton ecclesiastical parish and in Bury poor law Union. In 1933, Birtle-with-Bamford was dissolved with Birtle being amalgamated into the Municipal Borough of Heywood.The local church is Bircle Church, St. John the Baptist, Castle Hill Road, Bircle, Bury. In addition to the graveyard and garden of remembrance, the Church land includes an area now known as 'Bircle Church Wood', which was gifted by the Reverend Trend Smith.

Hail Storm Hill, also known as Cowpe Moss, is the highest point of the Rossendale Valley, England, an area of moorland and hill country situated between the West Pennine Moors and the South Pennines. It is wholly within Lancashire, although the administrative county boundary with the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale passes just a kilometre to the south-east of the summit. Scout Moor Wind Farm now spans Hail Storm Hill. The Forest of Rossendale also contains the Marilyn of Freeholds Top and the summit of Great Hameldon.

The historic parish of Bircle, near Bury, England, was created on 1 July 1846, although the village of Bircle (now known as Birtle) has existed for many centuries. It is believed that 'Bircle' is a shortening of the phrase 'Birch Hill', as it was suggested that there were birch trees in the parish. Names such as "Cleggs Wood", "Simpson Clough" and "Dobb Wood" appear on early Ordnance Survey maps. "Hill' appeared in the fourteenth century in the name of 'Birkhill' but it never found a permanent place. Over time its name has also appeared as Brithull, 1243; Birlcil, 1246; Birkhill, 1334, 1573; but Bircle appears in the Diocese of Manchester directory in England. Bircle Church is on Castle Hill Road.

Turn Village is a hamlet in the Rossendale borough of Lancashire, England. It is located in the South Pennines, on the A680 road between Edenfield and Norden. Population details are included in Ramsbottom. The surrounding moorland is the site for Scout Moor Wind Farm, the second largest onshore wind farm in England, which remains popular with Paragliders. The village is home to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary and the Fisherman's Retreat restaurant.

Shuttleworth is a hamlet at the northeastern extremity of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the South Pennines, 4.3 miles (6.9 km) north of Bury and 0.9 miles (1.4 km) south of Edenfield; Scout Moor Wind Farm lies to the immediate east. Effectively a suburb of Ramsbottom, the M66 motorway divides Shuttleworth from the main core of that town. Historically a part of Lancashire, the name Shuttleworth derives from the Old English scyttels and worth meaning a gated enclosure. The first element refers to a bar. It was documented as Suttelsworth in 1227 and Shuttelesworthe in 1296.From the Middle Ages, Shuttleworth lay within the township of Walmersley (sometimes called Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth) in the ancient parish of Bury, and hundred of Salford. Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth was made a civil parish in 1866. From 1883 the Shuttleworth area was administered as part the local government district of Ramsbottom, with the parish boundary between Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth and Ramsbottom being adjusted to match the local government district boundary in 1894.Shuttleworth is bounded to the south by Holcombe Brook and Summerseat; to the north by Edenfield, Irwell Vale; to the west by Holcombe and Ramsbottom and to the east by Stubbins, Turn Village and Shuttleworth-cum-Turn. In the 1990s, Manchester drag queen Foo Foo Lammar lived in Shuttleworth.

Jericho is a district of Bury, Greater Manchester, England. It is thought that the area of Jericho was so named when the reverend John Wesley preached there in 1778 along with his pilgrimage through Bircle.

Ashworth is a hamlet within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies in the Ashworth Valley, on the western edge of Rochdale, set amongst the Pennines. It is separated from Rochdale by the Norden Brook.

Greenbooth Reservoir is a reservoir to the north of Heywood and close to Norden in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, within Greater Manchester, England. In 1846, Heywood Waterworks Company finished constructing the Naden Reservoirs (Lower Naden, Middle Naden and Higher Naden) in the valley above the village of Greenbooth. By the 1950s, the village consisted of around 80 cottages, a sweet shop, a Co-op store and a school. There was also a woollen mill.In 1958, Heywood and Middleton Water Board decided that another reservoir was needed to supply water to the growing population of Rochdale and started construction of Greenbooth Reservoir that same year. It took over two years to build, with the village abandoned, mostly demolished and then submerged. The reservoir was completed in 1961 and officially opened in August 1965.The only visible reminder of Greenbooth village today is a plaque on the side of the reservoir dam wall which reads: "This tablet commemorates the village of Greenbooth, the site of which is submerged beneath the waters of this reservoir."The four reservoirs are in a peaceful area for a country walk with good views of Manchester in the distance. Some of the wind turbines of Scout Moor Wind Farm are also visible from the surrounding paths.
