St Catherine, Somerset

The Church of St Catherine is an Anglican parish church in St Catherine, Somerset, England. It was built in the 12th century as a chapel of ease of Bath and has been designated as a Grade II* listed building.The manor of St Catherine belonged to Prior Cantlow of Bath Abbey in medieval times. The church was remodelled by him around 1490, with the tower being added in 1503, and underwent further changes in 1704, 1846 and 1880. The interior includes a 12th-century font and a 15th-century pulpit.The church stands within the grounds of the 16th century St Catherine's Court, which is Grade I listed.The parish is part of the benefice of Batheaston with St Catherine within the archdeaconry of Bath. St Catherine's has been part of the parish since it was annexed in 1258.

St Catherine's Court is a manor house in a secluded valley north of Bath, Somerset, England. It is a Grade I listed property. The gardens are Grade II* listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England.The original house was a priory grange for the monks of Bath Abbey adjacent to the Church of St Catherine. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the manor was granted to John Malte and passed down to the courtier John Harington. It was bought in 1591 by John Blanchard and housed his descendants for generations, but the property fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, the house was bought by Colonel Joseph Holden Strutt who renovated it, with the work being continued by his sons. In 1984, actress Jane Seymour bought the house and carried out further renovation. During her ownership, the property was used as a recording studio and party venue, which caused complaints among the neighbours. It has since been further extended and is now rented out as a wedding venue. The fabric of the building has changed over the centuries with a two-storey porch being added in 1610. Further extensions were added in the early 19th century, and the orangery and library were added in the early 20th century. In the 21st century, another addition including a swimming pool was added. The house is surrounded by 4 hectares (9.9 acres) of landscaped grounds with terraces joined by flights of steps. The barn within the grounds is from the 13th to 15th centuries.

Eagle House is a Grade II* listed building in Batheaston, Somerset, near Bath. Before World War I the house had extensive grounds. When Emily Blathwayt and her husband Colonel Linley Blathwayt owned the house, its summerhouse was used, from 1909 to 1912, as a refuge for suffragettes who had been released from prison after hunger strikes. It became known as the Suffragette's Rest or Suffragette's Retreat. Emily Blathwayt was a suffragette and member of the Women's Social and Political Union. Between April 1909 and July 1911, trees were planted in the grounds to commemorate individual suffragettes; at least 47 were planted in a two-acre (8094 m2) site. Known as Annie's Arboretum, after Annie Kenney, the trees were destroyed in the 1960s when a council estate was built. Only one tree, an Australian Pine planted in 1909 by Rose Lamartine Yates, remains.

The Church of St John the Baptist in Northend, Batheaston within the English county of Somerset was built in the 12th century and remodelled in the 15th century. It is a Grade II* listed building.The parish of St John the Baptist in Batheaston is joined with St Catherine, which includes the church of the same name. It is within the archeadconry of Bath.The west tower has four stages with a pierced embattled parapet, setback buttresses, projecting octagonal stairs, and a turret at the south-east corner which terminates in a spirelet. It was built around 1460, and was rebuilt in 1834 by John Pinch the Younger, of Bath. It has pointed perpendicular two-light windows with cusped heads. The east side also has a canopied niche containing a figure, probably of St John.The tower holds a peal of eight bells.In the churchyard are several chest tombs which are also listed structures.

Little Solsbury Hill (more commonly known as Solsbury Hill) is a small flat-topped hill and the site of an Iron Age hill fort, above the village of Batheaston in Somerset, England. The hill rises to 625 feet (191 m) above the River Avon, which is just over 1 mile (2 km) to the south, and gives views of the city of Bath and the surrounding area. It is within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hill is one of several possible locations of the Battle of Badon and shows the remains of a medieval field system. Part of the hill was quarried in the 19th century. In 1930, it was acquired by the National Trust. The hill was the inspiration of the Peter Gabriel song "Solsbury Hill", recorded in 1977. A small turf labyrinth was cut into the turf by protesters during the widening of the A46 in 1994.

Batheaston is a village and civil parish 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the English city of Bath, on the north bank of the River Avon. The parish had a population of 2,735 in 2011. The northern area of the parish, on the road to St Catherine, is an area known as Northend. Batheaston has been twinned with Oudon, France since 2005.

Royal Air Force Charmy Down or more simply RAF Charmy Down is a former Royal Air Force station in Somerset, England, approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north-northeast of Bath and 96 miles (154 km) west of London. Opened in 1941, it was used initially by the RAF and from 1943 by the United States Army Air Forces, primarily as a night fighter interceptor airfield. It was closed in 1946. Today the remains of the airfield are on private property and are used as agricultural fields.

Bathampton Toll Bridge is an arch bridge in England, carrying a minor road across the River Avon near Bathampton, to the east of Bath. It is a Grade II listed structure. The bridge was built of Bath stone by Hickes and Isaac in 1872, for the Bridge Company Turnpike Trust. It has nine pointed arches: three larger ones in the centre and three smaller ones at either end. The north end was built over an earlier bridge and mill leat. The first version of the bridge was built in the 1850s and replaced a ford and ferry.The road over the bridge between Batheaston and Bathampton is single-track with give way signs. On the Bathampton side to the south of the river, the road crosses three further bridges. The first is a modern bridge over the dual-carriageway Batheaston/Swainswick Bypass which is part of the A4. The second crosses the Great Western Main Line and the final bridge is over the Kennet and Avon Canal.The Toll house was built at the same time as the bridge and is also Grade II listed. It is a two storey building with a high pitch slate roof. A board advertising the historical toll prices is still in place.In 2021, it had the tenth highest revenue of UK toll bridges, with a revenue of over £1 million. The bridge is owned by the General Estates Company, who also own Whitchurch Bridge, a toll bridge across the River Thames.

The Bybrook, also known as the By Brook, is a small river in England. It is a tributary of the Bristol Avon and is some 12 miles (19 km) long. Its sources are the Burton Brook and the Broadmead Brook, which rise in South Gloucestershire at Tormarton and Cold Ashton respectively, and join just north of Castle Combe in Wiltshire. The river has a mean flow rate of 57.25 cubic feet per second (1.621 m3/s) as recorded at Middlehill near Box. A variety of flora and fauna is supported by the river including the endangered white-clawed crayfish. Twenty watermill sites have been identified on the river but none now remain in use.

Marshfield is a town in the local government area of South Gloucestershire, England, on the borders of the counties of Wiltshire and Somerset. Toponymy derives from the Old English language word "March" meaning a border, hence Border Field would be the literal translation. It is not to do with "marsh" in the sense of bog. The history of the town is reflected in the buildings and architecture, including the church and market place. It was used by troops during the English Civil War. A range of customs and cultural events are held in the town.

Bathampton railway station is a former railway station in Bath, UK, serving the community of Bathampton. The station opened on 2 February 1857 and closed on 3 October 1966. Very little remains, as the station site was replaced with improved trackwork for a nearby junction. The only significant remains are the gateposts at the head of the approach road.

Hampton Rocks Cutting (grid reference ST779666) is a 1.3 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near the village of Bathampton, Somerset, notified in 1990. The site is listed in the Geological Conservation Review, for its exposure of Pleistocene rocks made up of coarse fluvial gravels showing scour-and-fill structures and planar bedding. Their sedimentology gives a clear indication that the deposits were laid down under 'cold-stage' conditions, probably during the Devensian glacial period.
