The Petchey Academy is an academy located in the Shacklewell area, and is based on the site of the former Kingsland School in the London Borough of Hackney, where its LEA is The Learning Trust. Named after businessman, philanthropist, and former football club director and owner Jack Petchey who sponsored the academy, It is a comprehensive high school and sixth form for boys and girls aged from 11 to 18.The academy is non-denominational and offers five subject categories. These are: Core (English, mathematics and science), Human Spirit (History, Sociology, Religious Studies) Wider World (Geography and Foreign Languages), Society and The Arts (Music, Drama, Art), and Enterprise and Innovation (Food Technology, Business, DT, PE, Computing).The Petchey Academy's uniform is a black blazer with blue accenting, white shirt, blue tie with a single coloured strip (corresponds to the student's house), black socks, black shoes and black trousers, with a tartan skirt option for girls. The Academy has gained a number of awards including ECM Gold, Inclusion Award and National Healthy School Status.

Dalston is a ward in the London Borough of Hackney. It roughly corresponds to the Dalston area of London. The ward has existed since the creation of the borough on 1 April 1965 and was first used in the 1964 elections. The boundaries of the ward from May 2014 are revised. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 14,727.

Kingsland Secondary School was a school located on Shacklewell Lane in the London Borough of Hackney, England. It closed in August 2003. The school, originally built as Dalston County School around 1937, was closed in August 2003, demolished and rebuilt under the new name of the 'Petchey Academy', named after Jack Petchey.

Shacklewell was a hamlet that developed on Shacklewell Lane in the modern London Borough of Hackney. The settlement core is now often seen as being part of Dalston which was originally a separate hamlet 500 yards to the south and also part of the Ancient Parish of Hackney. Shacklewell took its name from "some springs or wells which were of high repute in former days, but the very site of which is now forgotten."Shacklewell has never been an administrative unit, and partly for that reason its extent has only ever been nebulously understood. For a brief time its sphere of influence extended north and north-west beyond its village core but Shacklewell is now mostly forgotten as a place name in everyday use, though the historic street pattern of the original hamlet remains.

Arcola Theatre is in the London Borough of Hackney. It presents plays, operas and musicals featuring established and emerging artists. The theatre building, in the former Colourworks paint factory on Ashwin Street, Dalston, houses two studio theatre spaces, two rehearsal studios and a café-bar. In 2021 the theatre opened Arcola Outside, also on Ashwin Street.Since 2007 the Green Arcola project has aimed to make Arcola the world's first carbon-neutral theatre.

Shacklewell Lane Mosque (Turkish: Shacklewell Camii) is a Turkish mosque located in Shacklewell, London. Established by Ramadan Güney, his wife Suheyla Güney and other Trustees Turkish Cypriot in 1977, it is the first ever Turkish mosque in the United Kingdom. The mosque is an Andalusian-style building and was previously a synagogue, known as the New Dalston Synagogue.

On 14 November 1992, 3.2 tonnes of explosives was discovered during a routine check on a lorry travelling on Stoke Newington Road, part of the A10, one of the main routes between London and the north. The Volvo lorry was stopped by police around 1 am; the occupants fled. Constable Raymond Hall - a former Royal Engineer soldier and Falklands War veteran - chased the suspects to a residential street, Belgrade Road no.7 where he was shot twice by one of them. Shortly afterwards police arrested one man, Irish lorry driver Patrick Kelly, a member of the Provisional IRA, who was alleged to have been driving the lorry.The large amount of explosives, which was bigger than that used in the Baltic Exchange bombing earlier that year, could have caused "massive destruction". Investigations found detonation material inside the lorry as well. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist Branch were unable to determine the intended target, although it occurred on the day of the Lord Mayor's Show.

The Alexandra Theatre was a theatre located in the Stoke Newington district of London. Built in 1897, it was located at 65 and 67 Stoke Newington Road where the present-day Alexandra Court now stands. The theatre was demolished in the 1960s.

EartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney) is an independent arts centre in Dalston, London which opened in 2018 in a former cinema.

Ridley Road Market (known locally as Ridley Road) but often referred to as "Dalston Market" is the central marketplace in Dalston in the London Borough of Hackney. It is opposite Dalston Kingsland railway station, just off the Kingsland High Street section of the A10, about three miles north of the City of London. It sells a wide range of commodities, including food. Goods, particularly fruit and vegetables, are sold from traditional barrows (trolleys) in the pedestrianised street from 8am to 6pm daily (not Sundays or bank holidays). There is a large range of traditional and exotic produce from around the world. Other stalls and many other shops lining the street sell a wide variety of foods and household goods. New style stalls have recently been introduced by the local council.

Dalston Superstore is an LGBTQ bar and events venue in London. It was opened in May 2009 by Dan Beaumont and Matt Tucker. It hosts a number of club nights and drag events, with each one's individual audiences covering a diverse range of identities within the LGBTQ community. Both Time Out and Cosmopolitan have listed it as one of London's best club venues.

The Aziziye Mosque (Turkish: Aziziye Camii) is a mosque in Stoke Newington, London. The mosque was funded by the UK Turkish Islamic Association and the conversion began in 1983. Turks who had once felt reluctant to attend a ‘non-Turkish’ mosque welcomed the congregation as services were provided in the Turkish language rather than in English or Arabic. The total capacity of its Ottoman style mosque is 2,000 people. The institution includes a Halal butcher, a weekend school (Aziziye Education Centre), a wedding hall and a restaurant.Originally built as a cinema, it first opened in 1913 as the Apollo Picture House, was reopened in 1933 as the Ambassador Cinema and from 1974 played martial arts films and softcore sex films as the Astra Cinema, before closing in 1983. It is among Hackney Council's "Locally Listed Buildings."
