Cold Hesledon is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated a short distance to the east of Murton.

Dalton-le-Dale is a small village in County Durham, in England. The parish population taken at the 2011 census was 1,546. It is situated on the old A19 road between Seaham and Murton. Most of the village is located in a wooded valley bottom, straddling a single road which follows the stream that runs through what is left of Cold Hesledon Dene. Where the road rises to meet the original path of the old A19, there is a small but very fine medieval church which is hidden from the old A19 in a dip. In the opposite direction where the village road to Seaham crosses the stream is Dalden Tower. The pele-tower is the most prominent part of the remains of what was a large medieval manor house complex. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the tower is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.

Stony Cut, Cold Hesledon is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Easington district of north-east County Durham, England. It consists of a shallow cutting alongside Seaham Golf Course close to the village of Cold Hesledon. The cutting exposes a section of Late Permian Ford Formation (Zechstein) dolomite in which the transition from the flat to the crest of the shelf-edge of an ancient reef is clearly visible. The site has been designated as of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review.

Hesledon Moor East is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the County Durham district in east County Durham, England. It is located on the southern edge of the village of Murton, 10 km south of Sunderland and a little under 2 km north-east of Hesledon Moor West SSSI. The site consists of two non-contiguous parcels of land. Most of the larger portion is covered by unimproved neutral grassland, a habitat that was once common on the Magnesian Limestone plateau of east Durham but is now reduced to scattered fragments, of which this is the best surviving example. The dominant grassland species include common bent, Agrostis capillaris, sweet vernal-grass, Anthoxanthum odoratum, and crested dog's-tail, Cynosurus cristatus. In places the grassland displays a weakly developed acidic character; common bent and sheep's fescue, Festuca ovina, are the dominant species. A short distance to the south, the smaller parcel supports a base and nutrient-rich soligenous fen-type vegetation in which the dominant species varies between purple moor-grass, Molinia caerulea, and meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria.

Hawthorn is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated between Seaham and Easington. The only public building in the village of Hawthorn is the Staplyton Arms, a small public house situated in roughly the centre of the village. Close by Hawthorn Dene's mouth, there was until the late 1970s, a large Gothic Revival house, named "Hawthorn Towers" once the family home of Major Anderson, who was connected with the Building of the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge.

The Old Oak is a 2023 drama film directed by Ken Loach and written by Paul Laverty. It follows TJ (Dave Turner) the owner of a small pub who forms a bond with Syrian refugee Yara (Ebla Mari). It is a co-production between the United Kingdom, France and Belgium. The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on 26 May, where it competed for the Palme d'Or. It was released in the United Kingdom by StudioCanal on 29 September. At the 77th British Academy Film Awards, it was nominated for Outstanding British Film.

Easington Greyhound Stadium, also known as Moorfield Stadium, was a greyhound racing stadium in Sunderland Road, Easington, County Durham.

The Seaham Colliery was a coal mine in County Durham in the North of England. The mine suffered an underground explosion in 1880 which resulted in the deaths of upwards of 160 people, including surface workers and rescuers.Among the dead were 36 non-commissioned officers (NCO)s and men of the 2nd (Seaham) Durham Artillery Volunteer Corps, a part-time unit of the Royal Artillery who were recruited from workers at the mine. They had been commanded by the mine's owner, the Marquess of Londonderry.

Murton is a village in County Durham, England. Lying eight miles (13 km) east of the city of Durham and six miles (9.7 km) south of Sunderland, it has a population of 4,534, increasing to 7,676 at the 2011 Census.Originally a rural agricultural hamlet called Morton, the discovery of coal beneath its fields in the 19th century transformed it into an industrial community. 'Morton became known as Murton Colliery or Murton-in-the-Whins following the sinking of the pit in 1838 by South Hetton Coal Company, and the village was a productive coal mining community for over a century. The pit employed over 1000 men at its peak and featured in a Picture Post article showing the 'vesting' of the mine at nationalisation in 1947.The village also had the South East Durham Cooperative Bakery and a Northern Bus Company garage as added sources of jobs. In 1955 a by product works for coal was established for the production mainly of coke. The mine and other employment opportunities closed in the 1990s along with many other County Durham mines and now the old spoil heaps are host to a retail outlet development Dalton Park, bringing much needed new employment.
