The Old Main Library was a public library building in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Opened in 1870 and demolished in 1955, it served as the main library of the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library (CHPL) system for 85 years. In 1868, the Public Library of Cincinnati, then located in the Ohio Mechanics' Institute, purchased an opera house in construction after its owner went bankrupt. It hired architect James W. McLaughlin to convert the building, located on Vine Street at the corner of 6th Street, into a new library. Librarian William Frederick Poole significantly assisted McLaughlin with the design. Although construction of the Old Main had yet to be fully completed, a first portion opened on 9 December 1870. The rest was inaugurated in 1874. The main hall, whose cast-iron alcoves, spiral staircases and wide skylight garnered architectural praise. Although it was often described as beautiful, the Old Main was considered congested and impractical. Its estimated capacity of 300,000 volumes was exceeded within two decades. In 1955, it had 1.5 million books, which had to be stacked three deep on bookshelves, or stored in basements, the attic or at other branches. This lead to various complications, including the difficulty of quickly producing requested books and the deterioration, from repeated flooding, of the volumes that were stored in the sub-basement. Other challenges included insufficient lighting, poor ventilation, lack of seating and elevator and fire safety. Because the building was heated by coal furnaces, dedicated "book cleaners" had to be hired to clean the soot off of the books and stacks. Calls for a new library emerged in the 1920s and the project was officialized in 1944. A location for the "New Main" was found two blocks away from the Old Main, which closed its doors on 27 January 1955. It was demolished from March to June of that year. Because of its sturdiness, it was said to have "died hard", requiring 100 days of wrecking and a crew of 50 to 75 men. It was reportedly the largest demolition contract of Cincinnati's history at that time. Today, the site of the Old Main is occupied by an office building and a parking garage. Decades after the library's demolition, images of its interiors garnered significant public interest online.

The Cincinnati Enquirer Building is the former headquarters building of The Cincinnati Enquirer on Vine Street in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. It was designed by the firm of Lockwood Greene and Company and completed in 1926. The newspaper had been published from premises on the same site since 1866.Built primarily of limestone, and measuring fourteen stories tall, the Enquirer Building was built to house both commercial offices and publishing facilities. Lockwood Greene's architects designed the building in a mixture of architectural styles; among its most distinctive features include the first-floor storefronts, the recessed central main entrance, and marble stonework with a Christmas tree with bronze details.The building is shown as the home of WKRP in the 1978-1982 television series WKRP in Cincinnati and its 1991-1993 sequel The New WKRP in Cincinnati. However, the building was referred to as the fictional Osgood R. Flimm Building.In 1975, the Enquirer Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, due to its place in local history and architecture. The newspaper's printing facilities moved to a new property at the intersection of Western Avenue and Liberty Street in 1979, and the offices to 312 Elm Street in 1992.In 2015, the Cincinnati Enquirer Building was divided into two hotels, each containing over 100 rooms.

Race Street Historic District is a registered historic district in Cincinnati, Ohio, listed in the National Register of Historic Places on August 4, 1995. It contains 24 contributing buildings. A notable building in this historic district is the former John Shillito Company department store. It has been converted into luxury apartments and businesses. A significant feature of the building is the restoration of the skylit atrium that was part of the original building designed by Samuel Hannaford.

The Doctors' Building is a historic commercial structure in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Located on Garfield Place in the city's downtown, it is one of Cincinnati's few Late Gothic Revival commercial buildings.The Doctors' Building was designed by the firm of Tietig and Lee, one of Cincinnati's leading architectural firms in the early twentieth century. Completed in 1923, it was one of the firm's most prominent commissions; it was Cincinnati's only large building erected for the sole purpose of providing space for doctors' offices, and its location on the southern side of a park ensures that it can be seen from a distance. Terracotta tiles cover the eight-story facade, which is structured primarily of brick, although reinforced concrete was also employed in construction. Some additional elements are constructed of metal or marble. The building is topped with a mostly flat roof with a small penthouse.In 1986, the Doctors' Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It qualified for the Register both because of its place in local history and because of its well-preserved historic architecture. Key to these two statuses was its place as the area's only large building constructed for physicians and as one of the most important buildings designed by Tietig and Lee.

The Terrace Plaza Hotel is an 18-story International Style mixed-use building completed in 1948 in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. It sits at 15 West 6th St between Vine and Race Streets.Designed by the architecture firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill between 1946 and 1948, the Terrace Plaza Hotel was their first hotel project and one of the first high-rise projects to be constructed in the United States after World War II. SOM went on to design some of the world's tallest and most iconic buildings. SOM assigned Natalie de Blois to be the lead architect and the team planned details down to furniture and matchbook covers.The building was considered groundbreaking modernism when it opened. Harper's Magazine published “If you want to discover what your grandchildren will think of as elegance of this postwar era, you will have to go to Cincinnati.” In addition to being the first hotel after WWII, it was also the first to have self-operated elevators and individual thermostats in rooms.The building originally housed two department stores in a windowless lower block style portion of the building. The hotel portion rose above the stores in a very different style. A 5-star French restaurant with wall to wall windows sat above the hotel. The 8th floor plaza even hosted ice skating in the winter.Inside, the decor was accented with modern art (later removed and installed at the Cincinnati Art Museum), including a stunning abstract mural by Joan Miró, another mural showing Cincinnati landmarks by Saul Steinberg and work by Alexander Calder. Above the stores on the first seven floors, the hotel lobby on the 8th floor was accessed via high speed elevators. The building includes 600,000 sq ft. of space.The hotel closed in 2008 but efforts to renovate it are planned. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. In 2020, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named it as one of America's most endangered historic places. The building is currently mostly vacant, with some business still occupying street-level retail properties. Steps have been taken in recent years to prepare the building for preservation, and it is planned to be auctioned in May 2022.

The Cincinnatian Hotel is a registered historic building in Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, listed in the National Register on March 3, 1980. It is a member of the Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since 2018, the hotel has been owned by SREE Hotels of Charlotte and the hotel has been managed by Hilton Worldwide and is part of its upscale Curio Collection brand.

The Cincinnati Gymnasium and Athletic Club is a historic building in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Located on Shillito Place in the city's downtown, it was built for a club of the same name. Founded in 1853 by a group of Cincinnati elites, including Rutherford B. Hayes, the society chose to erect a new headquarters in 1902; at the time of its completion, this four-story building was hailed as one of the country's best athletic facilities, second only to the gymnasium at Columbia University in New York City.A Second Renaissance Revival building designed by John Scudder Adkins of the firm Werner and Adkins, the building is built of brick with stone and metal elements. Among these elements are rusticated stone courses, a molded balustrade, and trimmed windows. In recognition of its distinctive and historically significant architecture, the club building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Phoenix Building and Cincinnati Club are two historic buildings in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. The membership of these two clubs was chiefly Jewish.Located at 812 Race Street, the Phoenix Building was constructed in 1893, designed by prominent Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford, the same architect who designed Cincinnati's Music Hall, and intended as the home of an organization for Jewish businessmen. It was listed in the National Register on January 11, 1985, and it is also recognized as a historic landmark by the Miami Historical Preservation Association. It was built in the architectural style of the Italian Renaissance, featuring Tiffany Glass windows and purchased by the neighboring Cincinnati Club, located at 30 Garfield Place, in 1911. The Cincinnati Club later sold the building in 1983. It later became a fine dining restaurant 1988–2008, and continues as a private banquet facility. The Cincinnati Club operated as a hotel and private businessman's club was also built by Garber and Woodward, Frederick W. Garber's firm. The two properties are separate buildings and each are currently used as a banquet hall for private events.

The Sherith Israel Temple is located at 624 Ruth Lyons Lane (originally Lodge Street), in the backstage entertainment district in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. This is the oldest existing synagogue building west of the Allegheny Mountains and the fourth oldest building in downtown Cincinnati. It is the seventh oldest synagogue building in the United States. The synagogue was built in 1860 and was an active synagogue until 1882. After that the building served as a warehouse, plumbing supply house, and machine shop. Chris Cain, the city's historic preservation officer said, "This is a building of importance". Despite the history of the former Sherith Israel Temple downtown, the city officially decided it should not be declared "historic" in 1998. Officials debated more than a year whether the building, once an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, should be saved. The former synagogue was saved from demolition, renovated, and today houses condominia.

The Cuvier Press Club, located at 22 Garfield Place is a historic former house in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It is also referred to locally as the Fechheimer Mansion and as of 2006 served as the headquarters location for Cincinnati-based firm LPK.

The Palace Theatre was a historic movie palace in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Constructed at the dawn of the Roaring Twenties, it originally housed stage acts before conversion into a movie theater. Named a historic site because of its architecture, it was demolished in the early 1980s following years of financial failures.

The Butterfield Center is a New Brutalist structure in downtown Cincinnati. Designed by University of Cincinnati architecture professor David Lee Smith, the building promotes the structural and systems materials (concrete, ductwork, etc.) themselves by leaving them exposed.The Butterfield Recreation Center (also known as the Butterfield Nutrition Center, also known as the Butterfield Senior Center) was closed in 2004 as a result of push to cut $4.2 million from the budgets of several city departmentsIn 2005, design firm Libby Perszyk Kathman (LPK) purchased the Butterfield Center along with the Marcus Fechheimer House, with the vision to conjoin the buildings and create a new headquarters and meeting space. The Fechheimer House, which is also known locally as the Cuvier Press Club, also served as a part of the senior citizens' center from 1977 until 2004. LPK restored the Fechheimer mansion and commissioned Cincinnati firm FRCH Design Worldwide to plan the design for the connection of the two buildings.
