St. Elizabeths Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Southeast, Washington, D.C. operated by the District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health. It opened in 1855 under the name Government Hospital for the Insane, the first federally operated psychiatric hospital in the United States. Housing over 8,000 patients at its peak in the 1950s, the hospital had a fully functioning medical-surgical unit, a school of nursing, accredited internships and psychiatric residencies. Its campus was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990.Since 2010, the hospital's functions have been limited to the portion of the east campus operated by the District of Columbia Department of Mental Health. The remainder of the east campus is slated for redevelopment by the District of Columbia. The West Campus was transferred to the United States Department of Homeland Security for its headquarters and its subsidiary agencies. St. Elizabeths Hospital campus also has the joint tenant of the Douglas A. Munro Coast Guard Headquarters Building with hundreds of Coast Guard personnel. The campus grounds contain the Saint Elizabeths Hospital East and West Cemeteries. Burials were performed on the West campus beginning in 1856. Approximately 450 graves of Civil War veterans and an unknown number of civilians are buried on the West campus. In 1873, the three-quarter-acre West Campus burying ground was deemed full, and a new cemetery was opened on the East Campus. Approximately 2,050 military and 3,000 civilian interments occurred on the nine-acre cemetery on the East Campus over the next 120 years. The hospital was under the control of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services until 1987. At that time, ownership of its east wing was transferred by the federal government to the District of Columbia.

The Entertainment and Sports Arena is a multi-purpose events facility, located on the St. Elizabeths East Campus, in Congress Heights, a residential neighborhood in southeast Washington, D.C. The arena is home to the Washington Mystics of the WNBA and the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League. In addition, it houses a practice facility for the Washington Wizards of the NBA. The arena was officially opened on September 22, 2018.

Congress Heights is an island-platformed Washington Metro station in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., United States. The station was opened on January 13, 2001, and is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Providing service for only the Green Line, the station is located at Alabama Avenue and 13th Street, lying under St. Elizabeths Hospital. Congress Heights is the last Green Line station in the District of Columbia going southeast. Groundbreaking for the final segment of the Green Line occurred on September 23, 1995, and the station opened on January 13, 2001. Its opening coincided with the completion of approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) of rail southeast of the Anacostia station and the opening of the Branch Avenue, Naylor Road, Southern Avenue, and Suitland stations.Congress Heights is the closest metro station to the Entertainment and Sports Arena, home to the Washington Mystics of the WNBA and the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League.

Barry Farm is a neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., located east of the Anacostia River and bounded by the Southeast Freeway to the northwest, Suitland Parkway to the northeast and east, and St. Elizabeths Hospital to the south. The neighborhood was renowned as a significant post-Civil-War settlement of free Blacks and freed slaves established by the Freedmen's Bureau. The streets were named to commemorate the Union generals, Radical Republicans, and Freedmen's Bureau officials who advanced the rights of Black Americans during the Civil War and Reconstruction: Howard Road SE for General Oliver O. Howard; Sumner Road SE for Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner; Wade Road SE for Ohio Senator Benjamin Wade; Pomeroy Road SE for Kansas Senator Samuel C. Pomeroy; Stevens Road SE for Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, and Nichols Avenue (now Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE) for Henry Nichols who was the first superintendent of Saint Elizabeth's Hospital (Formerly called the Government Insane Asylum). The neighborhood name is not a reference to the late former mayor of Washington, D.C., Marion Barry, but coincidentally has the same spelling.

St. Elizabeths Hospital East and West Cemeteries are two historic cemeteries located on the grounds of St. Elizabeths Hospital. The West cemetery has burials from the Civil War and hospital patients. Most of the veterans buried in the West Campus cemetery were patients of the hospital and not casualties of the war. A burial ledger of hospital patients between 1917 and 1983 was transcribed and published in 2008.On the East Campus is the John Howard Cemetery, this cemetery has burials of veterans of multiple conflicts including the Civil War, Spanish–American War, World War I and II, a lone veteran of the War of 1812, and a Black Seminole Scout from the Seminole War. Access to the cemetery today is controlled by GSA with only authorized persons allowed.

The Bet Mishpachah Cemetery is a recently established Jewish cemetery located in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The cemetery is for the Bet Mishpachah community (Hebrew: בית משפחה) located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. This cemetery is located on land purchased from Elesavetgrad Cemetery and is adjacent to the Ohev Shalom, Adas Israel, and Washington Hebrew cemeteries. The address is 3233 15th Place SE, Washington, D.C. The cemetery marker stated it was founded in 1973, however, that refers to the founding of the organization. The first plots to be used to inter members were obtained in March 2012. As of May 2013, no one has been interred in these plots.

Anacostia is a Washington Metro station in Washington, D.C. on the Green Line. The station is located in the Anacostia neighborhood of Southeast Washington, with entrances at Shannon Place and Howard Road near Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE (a major street serving the southeastern portion of the city). The station serves as a hub for Metrobus routes in Southeast, Washington, D.C. and Prince George's County, Maryland.
