Congress Heights station

The Entertainment and Sports Arena is a multi-purpose events facility, located on the St. Elizabeths East Campus, in Congress Heights, a residential neighborhood in southeast Washington, D.C. The arena is home to the Washington Mystics of the WNBA and the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League. In addition, it houses a practice facility for the Washington Wizards of the NBA. The arena was officially opened on September 22, 2018.

The Bet Mishpachah Cemetery is a recently established Jewish cemetery located in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The cemetery is for the Bet Mishpachah community (Hebrew: בית משפחה) located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. This cemetery is located on land purchased from Elesavetgrad Cemetery and is adjacent to the Ohev Shalom, Adas Israel, and Washington Hebrew cemeteries. The address is 3233 15th Place SE, Washington, D.C. The cemetery marker stated it was founded in 1973, however, that refers to the founding of the organization. The first plots to be used to inter members were obtained in March 2012. As of May 2013, no one has been interred in these plots.

The Parklands-Turner Neighborhood Library is a branch of the District of Columbia Public Library in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It is located at 1547 Alabama Avenue SE. A small library kiosk opened in the area in 1976, and a somewhat larger facility opened in 1984, which was eventually replaced in 2009 by a new $878,000 library facility.The notably small 4,900-square-foot library is located in a leased space in the Shops at Parkland strip mall. In 2019, the library system conducted a study of potential sites for an expanded library in the neighborhood, and the district has budgeted money for the project for fiscal year 2022.

The Oxon Run Parkway is a corridor of federal park land in the Washington Highlands neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Parkway once extended across the District's southern corner in a crescent from Hillcrest Heights to Oxon Hill but most of it became Oxon Run Park in 1971, and now only the portion north of 13th Street still uses the Parkway name. It was originally intended to provide recreation space, but was later enlarged to provide flood relief, space for a major piece of sewer infrastructure and the possibility of a clean drinking water source. At one time there was to be a road within it, but the road was dropped from the plans. The remaining Parkway is now 146 acres (59 ha). 94 acres (38 ha) of the existing site were originally a portion of the Camp Simms rifle range. What remains of the Parkway sits between Southern Avenue, Mississippi Avenue and 13th Street, SE and is now managed by the National Park Service. It contains wetlands, floodplains, springs, and forests as well as the only remaining McAteen magnolia bogs in the District of Columbia.

Shipley Terrace, formerly known as Randle Heights, is a large residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., bordering Prince George's County, Maryland. The neighborhood, named after a former public housing complex in the neighborhood, which was largely occupied by low-income housing – primarily walkup and garden unit apartments. This neighborhood now has a mix of townhome communities, large single-family-home communities, as well as some low-income housing. It is a model neighborhood for the Hope VI revitalization Grant Program. Shipley Terrace is bounded by Alabama Avenue to the north, Mississippi Avenue to the south, Wheeler Road to the west, Suitland Parkway to the northeast, and Southern Avenue to the southeast. St. Elizabeths Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Southeast, Washington, D.C. operated by the District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health. It opened in 1855 under the name Government Hospital for the Insane, the first federally operated psychiatric hospital in the United States. Housing over 8,000 patients at its peak in the 1950s, the hospital had a fully functioning medical-surgical unit, a school of nursing, accredited internships and psychiatric residencies. Its campus was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990.Since 2010, the hospital's functions have been limited to the portion of the east campus operated by the District of Columbia Department of Mental Health. The remainder of the east campus is slated for redevelopment by the District of Columbia. The West Campus was transferred to the United States Department of Homeland Security for its headquarters and its subsidiary agencies. St. Elizabeths Hospital campus also has the joint tenant of the Douglas A. Munro Coast Guard Headquarters Building with hundreds of Coast Guard personnel. The campus grounds contain the Saint Elizabeths Hospital East and West Cemeteries. Burials were performed on the West campus beginning in 1856. Approximately 450 graves of Civil War veterans and an unknown number of civilians are buried on the West campus. In 1873, the three-quarter-acre West Campus burying ground was deemed full, and a new cemetery was opened on the East Campus. Approximately 2,050 military and 3,000 civilian interments occurred on the nine-acre cemetery on the East Campus over the next 120 years. The hospital was under the control of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services until 1987. At that time, ownership of its east wing was transferred by the federal government to the District of Columbia.

Douglass is a residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., on the eastern side of St. Elizabeths Hospital, on the border of the Congress Heights Metro Station. It is bounded by Suitland Parkway to the north and east, Alabama Avenue to the south, and the St. Elizabeths campus to the west. The Douglass neighborhood sits atop a hilly ridge that is the highest point in Southeast Washington, The area was once almost entirely dominated by two public housing complexes, Douglass Dwellings and Stanton Dwellings. It is now one of the up-and-coming areas of Washington, DC and experiencing a fair amount of retail investment and gentrification. The areas is close to THEARC (Town Hall Education Arts and Recreation Center), with institutions such as Trinity Washington University (formerly Trinity College), the School of the Washington Ballet and the Levine School of Music. The area has several new homes developments with houses priced in the $200–400,000 range. The area contains several historic Jewish cemeteries, including the Adas Israel and Elesavetgrad cemeteries and a relatively new Bet Mishpachah Cemetery. The neighborhood is named for the famed American abolitionist Frederick Douglass, whose homestead, Cedar Hill, sits approximately one mile north of his namesake community.

United Medical Center, formerly Greater Southeast Community Hospital, is the only public hospital in Washington D.C. The 330-bed facility is located in Southeast Washington, D.C.In 2016, the government of the District of Columbia awarded a no-bid contract for running the hospital to Veritas, a politically connected firm with limited experience in health care management. While receiving more than $800,000 monthly to manage the hospital, Veritas failed to improve the quality of care. Under Veritas management there were several cases of preventable patient deaths and negligence. The only obstetrics ward east of the Anacostia River was closed by regulators because it could not meet minimum standards. In 2018, following a close vote in the D.C. Council, a new management firm was selected.

Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) is a combined cultural and social services campus in Southeast Washington, D.C. The campus consists of three connected buildings, playgrounds, basketball courts and public spaces. In May 2007, THEARC won the Urban Land Institute's Award for Excellence and was cited for its contribution to the community, response to societal needs, innovation, public/private partnership and environmental protection and enhancement.

Fort Stanton is a residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by Erie St SE. to the north, Suitland Parkway to the south, 16th St. SE to the west, and 19th Pl SE to the east. The neighborhood is named after the nearby civil War defense Fort Stanton. Fort Stanton is part of Ward 7, represented by Vince Gray. Fort Stanton is situated between the neighborhoods of Anacostia, to the north, Barry Farm to the west, Garfield Heights to the East, and Douglass to the south. The nearby Anacostia Community Museum is located in Fort Stanton as well as the nearby Fort Stanton Recreation Center and Fort Stanton Pool.

Engine Company No. 25 is a historic firehouse located at 3203 Martin Luther King Jr., Ave SE, in Congress Heights, Washington, District of Columbia.

Southern Avenue is an island platformed Washington Metro station in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The station was opened on January 13, 2001, and is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Providing service for only the Green Line, the station is located on the southern side of Southern Avenue, putting it just outside the District of Columbia, opposite Valley Terrace straddling the D.C/Maryland border. Southern Avenue is the first station in Maryland going southeast on the Green Line. Groundbreaking for the final segment of the Green Line occurred on September 23, 1995, and the station opened on January 13, 2001. Its opening coincided with the completion of approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) of rail southeast of the Anacostia station and the opening of the Congress Heights, Naylor Road, Suitland, and Branch Avenue stations.This station provides service to the National Harbor via Metrobus route NH1 and TheBus route 35.
