Frost Woods (Monona, Wisconsin)

Monona is a city in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. A suburb of the state capital, Madison, the city lies on the southeastern shore of Lake Monona, from which the city gets its name. The population was 8,624 at the 2020 census.

The Willard and Fern Tompkins House is a single-family home built in 1937, designed by the Madison, Wisconsin firm of Beatty and Strang. It was part of the Frost Woods development in neighboring Monona. The house is an early example of the International Style that was beginning to take hold in the United States. It was added to the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places on August 18, 2024 (#5585) and the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 2023 (#100009539). The house has two stories, a basement and an attached two-car garage, with three bedrooms and a covered porch on the second floor. It has a flat roof and simple rectangular massing. Many of its bands of casement windows are wrapped around an exterior corner. The siding is lapped cypress.

The Tompkins-Brindler Mound Group is a group of Native American mounds in Woodland Park in Monona, Wisconsin. The group includes two linear mounds which are roughly 200 feet (61 m) and 210 feet (64 m) long. While there were once fifteen mounds in the group, including another group to the southwest called the Nichols Mound Group, the other mounds have all been destroyed. The mounds were built during the Late Woodland period, which covers roughly 500 to 1200 A.D., and during which most mounds in southern Wisconsin were constructed. While the purpose of linear mounds such as those in the Tompkins-Brindler group is uncertain, they are thought to have had religious or spiritual significance to the Late Woodland people.The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 2003.

The Nathaniel W. Dean House is a simple brick Italianate-style home built about 1856 in Madison, Wisconsin for Dean, an early leader and developer in the area. In 1980 the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Robert M. La Follette High School is a public school located in Madison, Wisconsin, serving the city's far east side with its attendance boundaries including parts of the City of Madison, City of Fitchburg, Town of Blooming Grove, and Town of Burke, teaching students in grades 9-12. Founded in the fall of 1963, it is a part of the Madison Metropolitan School District, and is named after former lawmaker and 1924 presidential candidate Robert M. La Follette, Sr.

Monona Grove High School (MGHS) is a school in Monona, Wisconsin, United States. Mitchal McGrath is the principal. The school was first established in 1955 to serve students from the city of Monona and the village and town of Cottage Grove and formerly served students from Town of Blooming Grove. The current building was constructed in 1999.

Capital Springs State Recreation Area is a state park unit of Wisconsin, United States, in development just south of Madison. The total area of the park is 3,000 acres (1,200 ha), with 326 acres (132 ha) designated as a state park. The park was authorized in 2000, the centennial of the Wisconsin state park system. The park includes 3,700 feet (1,100 m) of undeveloped shoreline on Lake Waubesa. The recreation area incorporates existing Dane County parks, and the site will be jointly managed by the state and the county. The property includes Native American archaeological sites that were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 as Lake Farms Archaeological District. In this area near Lake Waubesa, Early Woodland people lived seasonally, leaving behind remains of fish, mammals, waterfowl, nuts, and pottery fragments.

Lake Monona is a freshwater drainage lake in Dane County, Wisconsin, surrounded on three sides by the city of Madison, Wisconsin, and on the south east side by the city of Monona, Wisconsin. It is the second-largest of a chain of four lakes along the Yahara River (also including Mendota, Kegonsa, and Waubesa) in the area and forms the south shore of the isthmus that forms downtown Madison. The name 'Monona' is a word believed to mean 'beautiful', although the lake was originally named by the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) 'Tchee-ho-bo-kee-xa-te-la' or 'Teepee Lake'.

The Monona Mound is a Native American mound at 4009 Monona Drive in Monona, Wisconsin. The mound has a club shape, with a cone at one end and a long linear tail. It was once part of a group with another club-shaped mound and two conical mounds, but the other mounds have been destroyed. The mound was built by Late Woodland people roughly between 700 and 1100 A.D. It may have been used to mark the spring equinox, as its orientation lines up with the sunset either the first or second day after the equinox.The mound is located on private property which was once owned by violin maker Knute Reindahl; as Reindahl had learned wood carving from Native Americans, he and his family preserved the mound. When Reindahl's descendants sold the mound in the 1980s, it became the first mound protected under Wisconsin's Burial Sites Preservation Act. The mound was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 1, 1989. The Monona Landmarks Commission placed a historical marker at the site in 2020.

WIXL-LP (97.1 FM) is a radio station licensed to Madison, Wisconsin, United States, the station serves the Madison area. The station is currently owned by City Church, Inc. It broadcasts a Christian rock format. After many delays, the station went on air just ahead of an FCC deadline.

The Elmside Park Mounds are a group of Native American mounds in Elmside Park in Madison, Wisconsin. The group includes two animal-shaped effigy mounds; while their shapes are inconclusive, they have been described as a lynx and a bear. The mounds were once part of the Oakridge Mound Group, which included three other mounds, but the others were destroyed by home construction. Mound Builder peoples built the mounds in the Late Woodland period, likely between 800 and 1100 A.D., to serve as burial and ceremonial sites. The mounds may be the only remnant of a Late Woodland community on the northeast shore of Lake Monona and are archaeologically significant in the study of Late Woodland civilizations.The mounds were added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1991.

The Mills Woods Mound, also known as the Hudson Park Mound, is a Native American mound in Hudson Park in Madison, Wisconsin. It is an animal-shaped effigy mound with a long tail, though the exact animal it represents is unclear. The mound was once part of the large Mills Woods Mound Group, which included roughly thirty mounds of various shapes, but construction destroyed every other mound in the group. The mound group was built during the Late Woodland period, roughly between 800 and 1100 A.D., by a Mound Builder group; the Mound Builders used mounds for burials and ceremonial purposes. The mound is one of less than 60 effigy mounds remaining in Dane County, which once had 289 of the mounds, and has potential archaeological significance for the study of Late Woodland civilizations.The mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 7, 1991.
