The Jackson–Swisher House and Carriage House, also known as the Old Swisher Place, is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. Louis H. Jackson, who built the house, was a local attorney until he relocated to Denver, Colorado. Stephen A. Swisher, who lived here for 40 years, started an insurance agency and served as a curator and president of the State Historical Society of Iowa. Both were graduates of the University of Iowa. The house's primary significance is architectural, and it is said to have "more characteristics of the Gothic Revival than any other house in Iowa City." The steeply pitched cross gable roof is set off by bargeboards with quatrefoil and circular openings. The paired windows of various designs, the window bays, the dormer-like window above the main entrance, and the fluted chimneys lend a picturesque quality. The front porch features tracery ornamentation. The former carriage house, converted into a garage in 1946, is simpler in its ornamentation. It has paired windows on the second floor, and like the main house, there is a gentle flair at the eaves. The buildings were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Iowa Writers' Workshop, at the University of Iowa, is a graduate-level creative writing program. At 87 years, it is the oldest writing program offering a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in the United States. Its acceptance rate is between 2.7% and 3.7%. On the university's behalf, the workshop administers the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism and the Iowa Short Fiction Award. The workshop's current director is the writer Lan Samantha Chang.

The Arthur Hillyer Ford House is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. Ford was a Chicago native who worked as an electrical engineer before becoming a college professor. He eventually became professor of electrical engineering at the University of Iowa, and is credited with inventing glare-less automobile headlights. He hired local architect Orville H. Carpenter to design his Mission Revival house. It features a symmetrical composition, wall dormers with scalloped parapets, a quatrefoil window, stuccoed walls, red clay tile roof with wide overhanging eaves, and a full-length front porch with square piers and flattened arches. The American Craftsman influence is found on the interior, especially in the fireplace inglenook. The house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. In 1994 it was included as a contributing property in the Brown Street Historic District.

The Gilbert-Linn Street Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 120 resources, which included 94 contributing buildings and 26 non-contributing buildings. This section of the city was developed as the population increased in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The growth was due, in part, to the expansion of the University of Iowa and its hospitals. There was also an expansion of the central business district at the same time. Both professionals and business owners built houses here. The district contains houses for the upper class and the middle class, side by side to each other. It was also the place where German and Bohemian immigrant families resided. The architectural styles and vernacular house forms found here are representative of those built in the city from the 1860s through the 1930s. The Queen Anne and Greek Revival styles are particularly evident. Local architect Orville H. Carpenter designed at least eight houses in the district. The Emma J. Harvat and Mary E. Stach House (1918) was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Emma J. Harvat and Mary E. Stach House, also known as the De Saint Victor House, was the home of Emma J. Harvat, who was the first female mayor of Iowa City, Iowa and the first female leader of a U.S. city with a population greater than 10,000. Harvat was a successful businesswoman who had become financially independent and retired to Iowa City at the age of 43. After arriving there she became partner in another business venture with Mary (May) Stach, establishing Harvat and Stach to sell women's clothing. Harvat and Stach had the house on Davenport Street built for them in 1919. The house was designed by Iowa City architect Orville H. Carpenter, incorporating a variety of historical revival styles, dominated by Colonial Revival.

Old Brick Church, once known as First Presbyterian or North Presbyterian, is an event venue in Iowa City, Iowa. One of the few surviving pre-Civil War structures in Iowa City, Old Brick was built in 1856 at the site of an older Presbyterian church that had burned. Its steeple was demolished in an 1877 wind storm, it was rebuilt with a crenellated belfry, giving it a distinctive appearance. Last used as a church in 1970, Old Brick was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 as North Presbyterian Church. In 1974 the University of Iowa purchased the property and intended to demolish the church to make way for a parking lot, but public protest prevented the demolition. This public protest manifested in the formation of Friends of Old Brick, the organization that purchased the structure in 1977. Old Brick changed ownership again in 1987, when Old Brick Episcopal Lutheran Corporation (the current owner) purchased the building. Old Brick now thrives as an event venue and community center, hosting such diverse events as weddings, memorials, religious services, academic lectures, humanitarian fundraisers, and dance lessons. Old Brick also houses several non-profit offices.

The Hamburg Inn No. 2 is a small family diner located near downtown in Iowa City, Iowa, in the United States. The Hamburg Inn is a regular stop for presidential candidates during the Iowa Caucuses. Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama have visited, and the restaurant was featured on the TV show, The West Wing.

The Tippie College of Business, also known as Tippie, is the business school located at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Established as the College of Commerce in 1921, Tippie is one of the oldest and highest-ranked business schools in the United States. The college is named after 1949 graduate Henry B. Tippie, marking the first academic division at the University of Iowa to be named after an alumnus. The college is located in the Pappajohn Business Building, which is named after 1952 graduate Des Moines venture capitalist John Pappajohn. Since 1923, the college has held the gold standard of accreditation, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Today, with over 50,000 alumni and 4,700 students in programs spanning from BBAs to PhDs; the college houses six academic departments, 12 centers and institutes, and four student-managed endowment funds.

The Webster is a restaurant in Iowa City, Iowa. Established in May 2021, the business was included in The New York Times's 2023 list of the 50 best restaurants in the United States. It serves American cuisine.

The Pappajohn Business Building houses the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Completed in 1994, it is home to the Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and Small Business Center. The 187,000-square-foot (17,400 m2) postmodern building embodies the style of the Pentacrest structures with its use of aggregate stone and is a modern twist on the turn-of-the century buildings found at the heart of campus. Its style is also reminiscent of financial institutions such as the New York Stock Exchange and its use of a "money-green" paint scheme reinforces its financial focus.The building includes 27 classrooms varying in size from a 16-seat conference room to a 387-seat auditorium. Each classroom is equipped with technology including projectors and audio systems. The building also houses one of the largest information technology centers on campus. The open atrium spaces, study corners and outdoor patio provide places for students to study or relax. The Pappajohn Business Building is named after John Pappajohn, a Des Moines venture capitalist and UI alumnus. His $4 million contribution to the building fund was one of the largest the University had ever received. To commemorate his contribution, the University of Iowa bestowed his name upon the building. This was not the only funding provided for the $34 million building; in 1991 the Iowa General Assembly approved $24 million in state revenue bonds to help offset the cost of the building project. Upon dedication, alumnus John Pappajohn was quoted as saying "Pappa's in the house."

Economy Advertising Company is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It is important due to its association with John Towner Frederick, and the journal he founded and edited, The Midland. This was a literary magazine that focused on regional literature from the Midwest. It featured writers whose work was not being accepted by literary journals in the eastern U.S. that dominated national literary circles. While The Midland had several offices during its run from 1915 to 1934, Economy Advertising Company typeset, printed and bound every edition of the journal. They also provided financial support. Frederick had worked here as an apprentice when he was a student at the University of Iowa. He went on to become the first educator to organize and teach a course in American literature when he taught at the University of Iowa. Together with Frank Luther Mott, who was sometimes a co-editor of the journal, he organized the Saturday Luncheon Club, a literary forum that was a forerunner of the Iowa Writer's Workshop. When Frederick took a position at Northwestern University, the magazine relocated to Chicago. The Midland was never financially self-sufficient, and Frederick took on its deficits himself. Financial factors finally doomed it in 1933. Economy Advertising was founded around 1896 by Samuel W. Mercer. He had this two-story brick building constructed in 1923. In addition to The Midland, Economy published hard back books under the "Clio Press" imprint, and for several years printed the State Historical Society of Iowa's journal, The Palimpsest. They also published literary works edited by Mott that included Grant Wood's Revolt Against the City. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
