Portobello Police Station

Portobello Town Hall is a municipal structure in Portobello High Street, Portobello, Scotland. The building, which is expected to open under community management, is a Category B listed building.

Portobello Library is a public library in Portobello, Edinburgh, Scotland. The current building in Rosefield Place cost £37,500 and was opened on 11 October 1963 by Lord Provost Duncan M. Weatherstone with a stock of 26,000 books and eight staff. The previous accommodation in the Old Town Hall, now Portobello Police Station, was considered unfit for purpose and was criticized for being dirty, dark and overcrowded.Opened in 1897, the year after Portobello was formally incorporated into the City of Edinburgh, the library service is the joint-second oldest in Edinburgh (after Central Library (1890) and joint with Western (Dundee Street) Library (1897).In 1997, Portobello Library celebrated its centenary through a programme of talks.In June 2017, the Edinburgh Tool Library opened a lending service out of Portobello Library.Portobello Library is one of the main venues for events at Portobello's annual book festival in October.

Portobello is a coastal suburb of Edinburgh in eastern central Scotland. It lies 3 miles (5 km) east of the city centre, facing the Firth of Forth, between the suburbs of Joppa and Craigentinny. Although historically it was a town in its own right, it is officially a residential suburb of Edinburgh. The promenade fronts onto a wide sandy beach.

St John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church is a Catholic parish located in the Portobello district of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, in the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. Its historic church is located at the junction of Brighton Place and Sandford Gardens. Its parochial school, St. John's RC Primary School, is located at 18 Duddingston Road. From 2017 the many parishes in Edinburgh have been organised into clusters to better coordinate their resources. St John the Evangelist is one of three parishes in Cluster 2 along with St. Mary Magdalene and St. Teresa of Lisieux.

The George Cinema is a former Art Deco cinema on Bath Street in Portobello, Edinburgh. The building opened in 1939 as the County Cinema. For many years a bingo hall, it is a Category C listed building.

Portobello Toddler Hut is an early pioneer nursery school in Portobello, Edinburgh, Scotland, founded in 1929, and opened on Saturday, 14 November 1931 by Harriet, Lady Findlay, on "an appallingly wet day". When opened it catered for 40 children from 2 to 5 years of age. Starting at 10am, the older children returned home at midday and the younger ones stayed and had a meal and an afternoon sleep. It was run by a committee of ladies on a voluntary basis. The Education Committee of Edinburgh gave a grant to cover about a third of the costs, with the remaining money subscribed "so that bread-winning mothers may be relieved of the care of their children during the busy part of the day". Montessori methods were used to prepare the toddlers for more formal education. As well as a nursery the Hut was used for many years as a shelter for children lost on the beach during the summer holidays. The Toddler Hut is still operating in Beach Lane Portobello, the oldest community run, self funded childcare facility in the UK. During the COVID-19 crisis, the Hut was saved from closure thanks to a fundraising campaign.

Portobello Open Air Pool was opened in Portobello, Edinburgh on Saturday 30 May 1936 at a cost of £90,000.

Portobello railway station was located at Station Brae, off Southfield Place, in the Portobello area of Edinburgh (Scotland), with footpath access from other locations. The station was opened in 1846 by the North British Railway. It replaced an earlier Portobello station nearby on the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway.

Portobello Power Station was a coal-fired power station in Portobello, Edinburgh which was built in 1923 by the Edinburgh Corporation in order to cope with the increasing demand for electricity in the city. Although originally intended to be built in 1913, its construction was delayed because of the First World War, and it was formally opened by George V ten years later. Its electricity was used to power Edinburgh and the surrounding region while waste heat warmed the water of Portobello Open Air Pool. In 1938 the design of the station was extended by Edinburgh architect Ebenezer MacRae; its six individual chimneys were replaced with a single 365 feet tall stack, which weighed 10,000 tons, was made up of 710,000 bricks and cost in the region of £118,000 to build.Between 1952 and 1955, the power station achieved the highest thermal efficiency of any station in the UK, with peak output of around 279 megawatts, although an explosion in February 1953 led to a two-hour power blackout across Edinburgh. The explosion, which could be heard a mile away, was caused by sea spray collecting on high-voltage insulators in the main-grid substation. The power station closed on 31 March 1977 and demolished in 1980; a new housing estate was built on the site. During demolition, the chimney had to be taken down brick by brick because of its proximity to nearby houses.The Portobello coat of arms on the power station was rescued during demolition and it was planned to incorporate it into a new sports centre to be built in the area. This never happened and in 2016 the broken coat of arms was located in a council storage facility in the west of Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway opened Portobello railway station in July 1832. It remained in use until 1846 when a replacement station was opened nearby on the NBR Main Line.

Portobello Pier was a pleasure pier opened in Portobello, Edinburgh, Scotland. Designed by Thomas Bouch, it was 1,250 feet (380 m) long and 22 feet (6.70 m) wide, and included a tea room, camera obscura, and a concert hall. The final construction costs were £10,000.

Portobello Swim Centre is a multi-facility leisure venue in Portobello, Edinburgh. Built by Edinburgh City Architect Robert Morham in 1898, it comprises swimming pools, a gym and fitness studio, and Edinburgh's only authentic and publicly available turkish bath, one of three remaining in Scotland. The salt water baths were completed in 1901. It has been given Category A listed building status by Historic Environment Scotland.
