Brotherton, Pennsylvania

The Negro Mountain Tunnel is a tunnel located in Negro Mountain in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It was built by New York Central Railroad as part of the proposed but never completed South Pennsylvania Railroad, which over time became known as "Vanderbilt's Folly". The tunnel is located near milepost 116.7 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike where it is ten miles east of the Quemahoning Tunnel (also built for the railroad but never used by the Turnpike), 16 miles east of the Laurel Hill Tunnel (used by the Turnpike but bypassed in 1964), and seven miles west of the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel currently used by the Turnpike. When the newly formed Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission bought the South Pennsylvania Railroad's right-of-way in 1937, the Turnpike considered using the Negro Mountain Tunnel, but instead bypassed it, making it one of six tunnels bypassed along the highway, including Quemahoning and the original Allegheny Mountain Tunnel due to structural concerns, plus three used by the Turnpike but later abandoned.

Berlin is a borough located approximately 75 miles southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,004 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's major celebration each fall concerns the Whiskey Rebellion in the 1790s, although in recent years residents also commemorate the termination of Flight 93 in nearby Shanksville in 2001. The Berlin Fife and Drum Corps is one of the oldest such bands in North America. Snyder of Berlin potato chips are made in town, which also hosts Center Rock, Inc., a drilling-equipment manufacturer. Farming and coal mining have long been important in the area. It is not located near East Berlin in Adams County, or New Berlin in Union County. East Berlin was previously called Berlin but had to have the "East" added to avoid confusion with this Berlin.

Berlin Brothersvalley High School is a small Public High School, located in the central Somerset County town of Berlin. The High School is connected to the Middle School and Elementary School.

The Somerset Wind Farm is a wind farm in Somerset County, Pennsylvania with six GE 1.5 MW Wind Turbines that began commercial operation in October 2001. The wind farm has a combined total nameplate capacity of 9 MW, and produces about 25,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, which is roughly a 30% capacity factor. The wind farm was constructed by NextEra Energy Resources, based in Florida.The wind farm is just one-half mile (0.80 km) south of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which makes its 215-foot-tall (66 m) towers easily visible to turnpike travelers.

Roxbury is an unincorporated community in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. It lies along the borderof Stonycreek Township and Brothersvalley Township, which is formed by Pennsylvania Route 31 (Glades Pike). It lies at the intersection of Route 31 and Pennsylvania Route 160 (Huckleberry Highway). About 3 miles to the southwest of Roxbury along Route 160 is Berlin. About 3 miles to the northwest along Route 31 is Brotherton.

The Glessner Bridge is a historic covered bridge in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1881, and is a 90-foot-long (27 m), multiple Kingpost truss bridge, with half-height plank siding and a tin covered gable roof. The bridge crosses Stonycreek River. It is one of 10 covered bridges in Somerset County.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department is a volunteer fire department in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The department provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the boroughs of Shanksville and Indian Lake as well as to Stonycreek Township. The response area is approximately 62 square miles (160 km2) with an estimated 2,500 residents. Additionally the department is responsible for a 15-mile (24 km) stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Shanksville garnered global attention during the September 11 attacks when United Airlines Flight 93, bound from Newark, New Jersey for San Francisco, crashed in adjacent Stonycreek Township after its passengers rebelled against the flight's Al-Qaeda terrorist hijackers. It was the only one of the four hijacked planes that failed to reach the terrorists' intended target.

The county was created from part of Bedford County on April 17, 1795, and named after the county of Somerset in England. Somerset County comprises the Somerset, PA micropolitan statistical area, which is included in the Johnstown–Somerset, PA combined statistical area. The county is famous for being the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93, one of the four flights involved in the September 11 attacks, which crashed near the village of Shanksville after the flight's passengers struggled with Al-Qaeda hijackers for control of the plane, which terrorists intended to fly into either the U.S. Capitol or the White House.The Somerset County Amish community is the second oldest Amish community in the world that still exists, established in 1772. It is located in the South of the county around Meyersdale and Springs.

Shanksville-Stonycreek High School, located near the small community of Shanksville, in central Somerset County is a small high school serving a census of 146 in grades 9-12. Located within five miles is the newly dedicated Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands.

State Correctional Institution – Somerset is a medium-security, all-male correctional facility located outside Somerset, Pennsylvania, about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, and about five miles off the Somerset Interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
