Corte Sgarzerie

The Capitolium of Verona was a building complex forming part of the Forum area of the Roman city, it corresponds to today's Piazza delle Erbe. Parts of the cryptoporticus can be seen and visited under the loggia of Corte Sgarzerie, inside the crypt of the church of San Benedetto al Monte ­and under Palazzo Maffei.

The archaeological area of Corte Sgarzerie is located in the square by the same name in Verona, under the ground level. It encompassess the remains of the Capitolium, the main temple of Roman Verona, dedicated to Jupiter, Minerva and Juno. The archaeological excavation was carried on between 1988 and 2004 under the medieval loggia situated under the square, dicovering a section of the cryptoporticus that surrounded the temple on three sides, the remains of an ice-house, and underground space and the foundation of a medieval tower-house. The archaeological area of Corte Sgarzerie constitutes the only access point to the Capitolium open to the public.

The church of San Giovanni in Foro in Verona, is located on Corso Magenta, near the Piazza Erbe, the site of the ancient Roman Forum on Corso Porta Borsari. A church at this site was gravely damaged during the fire that swept medieval Verona in 1172. During restorations in the early 1900s, it was found that Roman walls had been incorporated into the external walls of the church. The base of the bell-tower dates from the 14th century. The renaissance portal of the church was sculpted by Gerolamo Giolfino with statues of Saints John the Evangelist, Peter, and John the Baptist. The fresco in the niche depicting St John was completed by Nicola Giolfino . The 3 baroque bells are rung with the Veronese bellringing art.

Palazzo Maffei is a historical palace in Verona, northern Italy, on the north-western side of Piazza delle Erbe.

The Domus Mercatorum or Casa dei Mercanti is a medieval edifice at Piazza delle Erbe in Verona, northern Italy. During the Middle Ages it was home to the Casa dei Mercanti, the guild of the city's merchants, while today is home to the Banca Popolare di Verona.

Palazzo Dalla Torre is a patrician palace in Verona, northern Italy, designed by Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio for Giambattista Dalla Torre. The palazzo was probably built from 1555, but remained unfinished. Allied bombardment in 1945 demolished a great part of the building. However, conspicuous remains of Palladio’s construction survive: the majestic access portal and a courtyard with columns and entablature.

The Palazzo Miniscalchi, adjacent to the 19th-century, Neoclassic style Palazzo Miniscalchi-Erizzo located on via Garibaldi, is a late-Gothic style palace with a facade on Via San Mamaso in central Verona, region of Veneto, Italy. The palace presently houses a museum and the Foundation for the Miniscalchi-Erizzo Museum. Access to the museum is through the Via San Mamaso entrance. The museum displays an eclectic collection of artworks including small Renaissance bronzes, archeologic findings from the region, weapons and armor, sacred works and utensils, maiolica, porcelain, tapestries, furniture, and paintings. It also displays the 17th-century Wunderkammer of Ludovico Moscardo. The design of the 15th-century Palazzo Miniscalchi, with the elegant portal and second story mullioned windows is attributed to Angelo di Giovanni. His workshop was also active in the churches of San Tomaso Cantuariense and Sant’Eufemia. The faded façade frescoes were painted in the 16th century by Michelangelo Aliprandi and Tullio India il Vecchio. The palace was inhabited until 1977 by the Miniscalchi family. By 1990, the museum was inaugurated.

The Torre dei Lamberti is an 84 m high tower in Verona, northern Italy. Construction of the tower was started in 1172. In May 1403 the top of the tower was struck by lightning, but the restoration works didn't start until 1448 and took 16 years. During that time, the tower was enlarged: The more recent sections can be recognized today by the use of different materials (such as marble). The large clock was added in 1779. The tower has two bells: the Marangona signals fires, work times, and the hours of the day, while the largest, called Rengo, is used to call the population to arms or to invoke the city's councils.

San Matteo con Cortile is a former Roman Catholic church in the historic centre of Verona, Italy dedicated to Matthew the Apostle. It was constructed in the medieval period on the site of a Roman temple of Janus. The building was deconsecrated in 1806 and it was used for various purposes, and it currently houses a restaurant and pizzeria.

Porta Borsari is an ancient Roman gate in Verona, northern Italy. It dates to the 1st century AD, though it was most likely built over a pre-existing gate from the 1st century BC. An inscription dating from emperor Gallienus' reign reports another reconstruction in 265 AD. The Via Postumia (which here became the decumanus maximus) passed through the gate, which was the city's main entrance and was therefore richly decorated. It also originally had an inner court, now disappeared. The gate's Roman name was Porta Iovia, as it was located near a small temple dedicated to Jupiter lustralis. In the Middle Ages it was called Porta di San Zeno, while the current name derives from the guard soldiers which were paid the dazio (Latin bursarii). The façade, in local white limestone, has two arches flanked by semi-columns with Corinthian capitals which supports entablature and pediment. In the upper part is a two-floor wall with twelve arched windows, some of which are included in small niches with triangular pediment.
