Glaisdale

St Thomas' Church is the parish church of Glaisdale, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. In 1585, a church was constructed in Glaisdale, acting as a chapel of ease to St Hilda's Church, Danby. It was demolished and a new church built between 1792 and 1794 in the Gothick style, from which period the nave and tower survive. The church was remodelled from 1876 to 1879, the work including a new east end. The building was grade II listed in 1969. The church is built of sandstone with a green slate roof. It consists of a continuous nave and chancel, and a west tower. The tower has a hood mould below the bell openings, which have two slightly pointed lights, a parapet stepped up at the angles, and a pyramidal roof with a ball finial and a weathervane. On the south wall of the nave is a sundial dated 1793. The building incorporates the datestone from the old chapel, inscribed "1585".

Hart Hall is a historic building in Glaisdale, a valley in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed as a longhouse in 1684. In 1768, the lower end was rebuilt to provide kitchen facilities, while the upper end was rebuilt in 1797. Probably in the early 19th century, the lower part of the building was raised from one-and-a-half to two stories. The farmhouse was grade II* listed in 1987. A legend holds that the building was formerly haunted by a hob, which assist with work in the fields. The farmhands left it a gift, which unexpectedly caused it to leave. The building is constructed of sandstone, the older part with a pantile roof, and the later part with a roof of green slate with stone ridges, gable copings and kneelers. It has two storeys, the main house with three bays. This has a central blocked doorway with quoined jambs, and a lintel with false voussoirs and a dated keystone. Most of the windows are horizontally-sliding sashes. The downhouse has two storeys, three irregular bays, and an outhouse on the left. It contains a doorway with alternate-block jambs and a dated lintel, a stable door with a re-set keystone, and sash windows. Inside, there is a cross passage, one wall of which is original. There is much early woodwork, including panelling, cupboards, and a chimneypiece in the parlour.

Quarry Cottage is a historic building in Glaisdale, a valley in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was originally a longhouse named Quarry Farm, probably built in the early 17th century. Originally there was only an attic over the forehouse, but in the 19th century, an attic storey was provided throughout. At some point, most of the byre was demolished, and most of the roof timbers have been replaced, but the building is generally well-preserved. It is also noted for its witch post in its original position. The farmhouse was grade II* listed in 1969. The farmhouse is built of sandstone on a plinth, with a pantile roof and stone copings. It has one storey and an attic, three bays, and a passage bay. On the front are chamfered mullioned windows, and a small larder window. At the rear is a wide buttress and an inserted casement window, and in the roof is a modern dormer and flanking skylights. Inside are some early doors, and the original firebeam and hood with a fireplace from about 1700.

Glaisdale is a railway station on the Esk Valley Line, which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby via Nunthorpe. Beggar's Bridge is a packhorse bridge straddling the River Esk in Glaisdale, North Yorkshire, England. The bridge dates back to 1619 and was reputedly built by a former poor farm worker (Tom Ferris) who wanted to meet his love but could not due to the river being in flood. Having become rich working at sea, then becoming the mayor of Kingston upon Hull, Ferris built the bridge at that point when flooding prevented him crossing it years before. The structure is both a scheduled monument and a grade II* listed building.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic church in Lealholm, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. In the early 20th century, Lealholm was in the parish of St Hedda's Church, Egton Bridge. A church was built in the village in 1932, to a Gothic revival design by the local architect W. R. Robinson. In 1948, it was given its own parish. Nikolaus Pevsner was critical of the building, describing it as "not a job to do any architect credit". The church is built of stone, with a Welsh slate roof. It consists of a nave and sanctuary, with a gabled sacristry to the south. The church is on a steep north-south slope. The windows are lancets, and there is a cross atop the west gable. There is a simple interior with a king post roof, a pine altar and pulpit, stained glass figures in the windows, and wooden stations of the cross recessed in the walls.

St James' Church is an Anglican church in Lealholm, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The church was built in 1902, as a chapel of ease to St Thomas' Church, Glaisdale. The building was designed by Temple Moore, in the Early English style. Nikolaus Pevsner describes it as "a job to do him credit", and it was grade II* listed in 1969. The church is built of sandstone with a clay tile roof. It consists of a three-bay nave, a south porch, a three-bay chancel with a small north vestry, and a slim west tower. The tower has a single stage, a chamfered plinth, a west lancet window with a double-chamfered surround, shouldered-arched bell openings, and a corbelled-out embattled parapet. The windows in the body of the church have pointed heads and shouldered lintels, and the east window has three stepped lancets. Inside, there is exposed stonework and a barrel-shaped roof. There are pine benches and an oak pulpit, lectern and choir seats. The chancel has a mosaic floor, and the reredos is of carved marble.

Lealholm is a small village in the Glaisdale civil parish, in the county of North Yorkshire, England. It is sited at a crossing point of the River Esk, in Eskdale which is within the North York Moors National Park. It is 9.5 miles (15.3 km) by road from the nearest town of Whitby, and approximately 27 miles (43 km) from both Middlesbrough and Scarborough. The village is typical of those found all across the North York Moors which straddle the main through-routes along the valley bottoms. It is mostly built of local stone with pantiled or slate roofs. Settlement around modern-day Lealholm can be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086, with entries concerning the Manor of Crumbeclive and "Lelum" at the site of Lealholm Hall, Lealholmside. Lealholmside is a hamlet by Lealholm, and was a popular location with the photographer Francis Meadow Sutcliffe. A honeypot during the summer months, Lealholm is located midway along the Esk valley between the villages of Glaisdale, to the east and Danby to the west. Lealholm is on the route of the Esk valley railway line, which runs from Whitby to Middlesbrough, and is served by Lealholm railway station. A large part of the community is involved in farming due to the high fertility of the slopes in Eskdale, whilst other members of the community are involved in tourism or commute to industrial centres such as Middlesbrough. This led to the economy of the area being hard hit by the 2001 UK foot and mouth crisis. Lealhom was a place of affection for Irish-born poet John Castillo, who wrote "Ah lovely Lealholm! Where shall I begin. To say what thou art now and once hast been?".

Lealholm Methodist Chapel is a historic Methodist place of worship in Lealholm, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The chapel was built in 1839 for the Wesleyan Methodist Church. By the early 20th century, it was one of four Wesleyan chapels in the small valley. The chapel has been flooded on numerous occasions, and the heights of various floods are marked by cuts on the external stonework. The chapel was grade II* listed in 1969. The chapel is built of sandstone, with a sill band, and a purple slate roof with a stone ridge, copings and curved kneelers. There is one tall storey, three bays, and a small single-storey extension to the southeast. The doorway has a pointed-arched head and a hooded fanlight. The windows are sashes, also with pointed-arched heads. Above the doorway is a square panel with fan-patterned spandrels and a dated and inscribed oval plaque.

Delves Cottage is a historic building in Egton Bridge, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The cruck framed cottage was probably built in the 17th century. A chimney was added in 1713. The building was restored and extended between 1975 and 1977, and it was grade II* listed in 1989. The cottage's wooden frame is encased in sandstone. It has a thatched roof, and an extension with a pantile roof. It has a single storey, 2½ bays, and a lower single-storey single bay extension. On the front is a doorway, a fire window with a chamfered surround, a sash window and a casement window. Inside, there are three pairs of full crucks and an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressummer. Next to the fireplace is an early spice cupboard, with a drawer below it. Other early features include a carved witch post, a feature once common in the area, but now the only surviving one in the parish.

Glaisdale Head Methodist Church is a historic chapel in Glaisdale, a valley in North Yorkshire, in England. The chapel was built by the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1821, along with an attached manse. The manse was extended in 1850. By the early 20th century, it was one of four Wesleyan chapels in the small valley. The building was grade II listed in 1969, along with the walls surrounding the churchyard. It is on the Heritage at Risk Register, due to damp caused by being built partly into the ground, but is still in use as a Methodist chapel. The original part of the building has a Westmorland slate roof, and the extension has a purple slate roof. The chapel has one tall storey, and a square plan with fronts of two bays. The windows are round-headed sashes with voussoirs, and on the west front is a gabled porch with an inscribed and dated oval plaque. The manse has two storeys and a basement, one gabled bay facing the road, and steps leading up to the doorway. The extension on the east side is approached by steps in the angle, and the windows are sashes. In front is a wall with heavy flat coping, and at the left are steps up to the chapel, with a large square dated pier with a domed square cap at the bottom . From this, railings with curved heads run alongside the steps. The interior is plain, with a pulpit and curved benches.
