Glaisdale railway station

Beggar's Bridge is a packhorse bridge straddling the River Esk in Glaisdale, North Yorkshire, England. The bridge dates back to 1619 and was reputedly built by a former poor farm worker (Tom Ferris) who wanted to meet his love but could not due to the river being in flood. Having become rich working at sea, then becoming the mayor of Kingston upon Hull, Ferris built the bridge at that point when flooding prevented him crossing it years before. The structure is both a scheduled monument and a grade II* listed building.

Glaisdale is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England, within the North York Moors National Park. It lies at grid reference NZ775054 on the River Esk, between the villages of Lealholm and Egton Bridge, 8 miles (13 km) west of Whitby, and is served by Glaisdale railway station on the Esk Valley Line. The village lies on the regional walking route, the Esk Valley Walk, and on the north of England's Coast to Coast Walk. According to the 2011 UK census, Glaisdale parish had a population of 1,018, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 974. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Scarborough, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. St Thomas' Church, Glaisdale is one of five churches within the United Benefice of Middle Esk Moor. The present church dates from 1793. An earlier "Chappell of Glaisdale", a cruciform straw-thatched building, was located on the same site: a date stone of 1585 may be seen in the side of the steps leading to the present church tower.

St Thomas' Church is the parish church of Glaisdale, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. In 1585, a church was constructed in Glaisdale, acting as a chapel of ease to St Hilda's Church, Danby. It was demolished and a new church built between 1792 and 1794 in the Gothick style, from which period the nave and tower survive. The church was remodelled from 1876 to 1879, the work including a new east end. The building was grade II listed in 1969. The church is built of sandstone with a green slate roof. It consists of a continuous nave and chancel, and a west tower. The tower has a hood mould below the bell openings, which have two slightly pointed lights, a parapet stepped up at the angles, and a pyramidal roof with a ball finial and a weathervane. On the south wall of the nave is a sundial dated 1793. The building incorporates the datestone from the old chapel, inscribed "1585".

Delves Cottage is a historic building in Egton Bridge, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The cruck framed cottage was probably built in the 17th century. A chimney was added in 1713. The building was restored and extended between 1975 and 1977, and it was grade II* listed in 1989. The cottage's wooden frame is encased in sandstone. It has a thatched roof, and an extension with a pantile roof. It has a single storey, 2½ bays, and a lower single-storey single bay extension. On the front is a doorway, a fire window with a chamfered surround, a sash window and a casement window. Inside, there are three pairs of full crucks and an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressummer. Next to the fireplace is an early spice cupboard, with a drawer below it. Other early features include a carved witch post, a feature once common in the area, but now the only surviving one in the parish.

Hart Hall is a historic building in Glaisdale, a valley in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed as a longhouse in 1684. In 1768, the lower end was rebuilt to provide kitchen facilities, while the upper end was rebuilt in 1797. Probably in the early 19th century, the lower part of the building was raised from one-and-a-half to two stories. The farmhouse was grade II* listed in 1987. A legend holds that the building was formerly haunted by a hob, which assist with work in the fields. The farmhands left it a gift, which unexpectedly caused it to leave. The building is constructed of sandstone, the older part with a pantile roof, and the later part with a roof of green slate with stone ridges, gable copings and kneelers. It has two storeys, the main house with three bays. This has a central blocked doorway with quoined jambs, and a lintel with false voussoirs and a dated keystone. Most of the windows are horizontally-sliding sashes. The downhouse has two storeys, three irregular bays, and an outhouse on the left. It contains a doorway with alternate-block jambs and a dated lintel, a stable door with a re-set keystone, and sash windows. Inside, there is a cross passage, one wall of which is original. There is much early woodwork, including panelling, cupboards, and a chimneypiece in the parlour.

Quarry Cottage is a historic building in Glaisdale, a valley in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was originally a longhouse named Quarry Farm, probably built in the early 17th century. Originally there was only an attic over the forehouse, but in the 19th century, an attic storey was provided throughout. At some point, most of the byre was demolished, and most of the roof timbers have been replaced, but the building is generally well-preserved. It is also noted for its witch post in its original position. The farmhouse was grade II* listed in 1969. The farmhouse is built of sandstone on a plinth, with a pantile roof and stone copings. It has one storey and an attic, three bays, and a passage bay. On the front are chamfered mullioned windows, and a small larder window. At the rear is a wide buttress and an inserted casement window, and in the roof is a modern dormer and flanking skylights. Inside are some early doors, and the original firebeam and hood with a fireplace from about 1700.

The Horseshoe Hotel is a pub in Egton Bridge, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed in the early 19th century. It was altered and extended later in the century, and further altered in the 20th century. It was grade II listed in 1969. The business was sold in 2020, at which time, it was a free house with two bars, a dining room, and six hotel rooms, along with two rooms used as accommodation by the owners. In 2021, the new owners competed on the "Four in a Bed" TV show. At the rear of the building, a summerhouse was constructed in the 1930s, which was initially used to host the annual Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show. During the Second World War it was commandeered as a first aid post, then after the war served as staff accommodation, an ice cream shop, and then a holiday let, before becoming a farm shop. In 2020, a wooden bar building was added. The pub is built of sandstone, and has a pantile roof with coped gables, shaped kneelers and ball and pedestal finials. There are two storeys and attics, a main front of four bays, a lean-to on the left, and a rear wing with two storeys and two bays. The central doorway has a shaped tooled lintel, to its left is a fire window, to the right is a canted bay window, the other windows are tripartite, and in the roof are two flat dormers with casements. In the right gable end is a relief "F" in a circular surround with keystones.

St Hedda's Catholic Primary School is a school in Egton Bridge, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A Catholic chapel was in existence in Egton Bridge by 1743, by Bridge House, which was owned by the Smith family. By 1780, 415 Catholics were recorded in the district. In 1790, a church was built in the village, with a presbytery to the rear. In 1867, the new St Hedda's Church, Egton Bridge was consecrated, the old church was converted into a school, and the presbytery was extended. The school was extended in the 20th century, to the front, back and left. The building was grade II listed in 1969. The building is constructed of sandstone, and has a stone slate roof with stone coping and kneelers. It has two storeys and the entrance is gabled with one bay and a lean-to extension. The doorway is in the extension, and above is a mullioned and transomed window, a canopied niche containing a painted statue, an inscribed semicircular tablet, and a square bellcote with a shallow ogee cap and a cross.

Egton is a railway station on the Esk Valley Line, which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby via Nunthorpe. The station, situated 7 miles 66 chains (12.6 km) west of Whitby, serves the villages of Egton and Egton Bridge in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.

Egton Bridge is a village in the county of North Yorkshire, England. It lies within the North York Moors National Park, on the River Esk, between the villages of Glaisdale and Grosmont, about six miles south-west of Whitby, and on the route of the Esk Valley Walk. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Scarborough, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. The stone bridge that crosses the Esk was rebuilt in 1992, having been destroyed by flood in the 1930s.

St Hedda's Church is a Catholic parish church in Egton Bridge, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A Catholic chapel was in existence in Egton Bridge by 1743, and it was replaced by a church in 1790. In 1867, it was replaced by the current, larger, church, while the old church was converted into St Hedda's Catholic Primary School. The church was designed by Hadfield and Son. A pieta with a timber canopy were added to the west end in 1900. The building was grade II listed in 1998. The church is built of stone with Welsh slate roofs and terracotta ridge tiles. It consists of a nave, north and south aisles, a chancel and an apse. At the west end is a pointed arch rising to a gabled bellcote with a cross finial, and a doorway with a pointed moulded arch with a hood mould and columns, above which is a circular window. Most of the other windows are lancets. Inside, there is an organ gallery at the west end, and the original wooden pews and octagonal pulpit. There is a wooden barrel vaulted roof, with decoration applied by stencil. The chancel is lavishly decorated, including a painted and gilded altar and reredos. The font is circular and was made of stone in about 1790, probably having been relocated from the old church.

Egton Manor is an historic country house near the village of Egton Bridge, on the banks of the River Esk in the North Yorkshire Moors. The Grade II listed building was built in 1869 by the Foster family, whose descendants still live there today. Egton Manor, which is listed in the Domesday Book, lies at the heart of the 6,000 acre Egton Estate.
