The Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre hosted the sailing events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The center is located about four miles from downtown Athens along the coast. It was officially opened on August 2, 2004, a few weeks before the Olympics, though test events were conducted at the site in August 2002 and 2003. The center had a capacity of 1,600 for the medal ceremonies. After the Olympics, the site was turned over to the private sector (Seirios AE), and will become a marina with a 1,000+ yacht capacity, as part of Athens' revitalized waterfront.

Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport that has been part of the Olympic programme starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad (1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and possibly the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program in 2004 consisted of eleven disciplines divided over nine sailing classes. For each discipline multiple races were scheduled between 14 and 28 August 2004 along the coast near Athens. Athens hosted the Olympic sailing competitions for the second time, having done so during the 1896 Summer Olympics. However, in 1896, the sailing competition was cancelled due to heavy storms and further bad weather conditions. This time the weather conditions were good. The sailing event was executed on the several types of Olympic courses in different course areas using the 'Fleetrace' and 'Matchrace' formats.

The Hellinikon Olympic Indoor Arena was a multi-use sports indoor arena that was located in Elliniko, a suburban town in the southern part of the Athens urban agglomeration, Greece. It was a part of the Hellinikon Olympic Complex, and it was located adjacent to the Helliniko Fencing Hall. It was approximately 10 miles from the Athens Olympic Village. It was built on the site of the former Hellinikon International Airport for the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2004 Summer Paralympics. The arena had in use its full seating capacity of 15,000 spectators for basketball, and 13,500 for handball during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. However, only 12,500 seats were made available to the public for the basketball tournament, and only 10,700 for the handball tournament. After the Olympics, only the lower tier 8,500 seats have been made available by the arena's owners for public use. However, the arena can still hold 15,000 for basketball with the upper tier in full use. The arena was also known as the National Athletic Center Elliniko "Makis Liougas". It was demolished in 2022.

The Hellinikon Olympic Softball Stadium is a softball stadium located in the Hellinikon Olympic Complex in Athens. It hosted the softball competitions during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The venue consists of a main softball field of 4,800 seats - though only 3,400 seats were made publicly available during the games - and 2 warm-up fields nearby. Construction on the facility was completed on 29 February 2004, and it was officially opened on 30 July 2004. Softball however, has not been played at the stadium since the end of the 2004 Olympic Games. One minder of the stadium commented that, "The softball [stadium] is in perfect working order. It is not abandoned. It's just that nobody ever plays softball". The stadium has since fallen into disuse and disrepair.

The Hellinikon Fencing Hall was a multi-purpose indoor sporting arena that was located adjacent to the Hellinikon Olympic Arena, in Hellinikon, Athens, Greece. The venue was part of the Hellinikon Events Hall of the Hellinikon Olympic Complex. It was demolished in 2022.

Hellinikon Stadium is a stadium located at the Hellinikon Olympic Complex in Hellinikon, Athens, located approximately 8 kilometres south of the center of Athens, near Glyfada on the Aegean Sea coast. Ethnikos Piraeus F.C. currently plays its home matches there. The complex was built on the site of the former Hellinikon International Airport for the staging of the 2004 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Paralympics and consisted of the following venues: Hellinikon Indoor Arena (Basketball and Team handball); Hellinikon Fencing Hall; Olympic Hockey Stadium (Field hockey); Helliniko Baseball Centre; Hellinikon Olympic Softball Stadium; and Hellinikon Slalom Centre (Whitewater slalom).

The Hellenikon Metropolitan Park (also called "the Ellinikon") is an urban development under construction in Hellinikon, Athens, Greece, on the site of the former Hellenikon International Airport.It is to include a park as well as luxury homes, hotels, a casino, a marina, shops, and offices and will have Greece's tallest buildings reaching up to 200 meters in height. Construction had been scheduled to begin in 2008 and be completed by 2013, but the plans were shelved in the midst of the financial crisis. In July 2020, work began on the park and is due to be completed in 2024, while the Riviera Tower and Hard Rock Hotel Casino are due to be completed by 2026.

Olympic Airways Flight 411 was a flight from Ellinikon International Airport bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport and operated by Olympic Airways using a Boeing 747-200. On August 9, 1978, the flight came close to crashing in downtown Athens. Despite maneuvers near the edge of the flight envelope, none of the 418 passengers and crew suffered serious injury. Boeing reported that there was an "engine shut down" while taking off. Based upon review of the flight data recorder, Boeing concluded that nine seconds after takeoff, the flight crew had turned off the water injection pumps in response to warnings, which reduced thrust. Turning off the pumps when the plane was in takeoff climb limited the plane's ability to climb. Boeing states that thrust was increased manually after 325 seconds and then the plane climbed normally. Captain Sifis Migadis and Captain Kostas Fikardos managed to keep the aircraft in the air at an extremely low altitude below minimal speed. All Boeing simulations of the flight resulted in crashes.

The 1973 Hellinikon International Airport attack was an attack at the Hellinikon International Airport at Athens, Greece. The two attackers were members of the Palestinian militant organization Black September. The militants used sub-machine guns and grenades against the passengers waiting in the passenger lounge. The attackers took hostages before they finally surrendered to the Greek police. It is believed that the gunmen wanted to hijack a plane, but they decided to attack when they were about to be searched by a Greek security inspector before boarding.

Cape Colias (Ancient Greek: Κωλιὰς ἄκρα, Kōliàs ákra) was a promontory on the coast of Attica in ancient Greece, located about 20 stadia from Phaleron. The cape is most commonly identified with the modern promontory of Agios Kosmas. The site was historically significant as the location where the wreckage of the Persian fleet washed ashore after the Battle of Salamis, and it was home to a notable sanctuary of Coliad Aphrodite and Genetyllides. The location was also known for high-quality clay used for pottery.

On 7 October 1979, a Swissair DC-8 crashed while attempting to land at Athens-Ellinikon International Airport in Athens, Greece. Of the 154 passengers and crew on board, 14 were killed in the accident.

The Hellinikon Olympic Hockey Centre was the site of the field hockey events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Located in the Hellinikon Olympic Complex, the facility consists of two hockey fields. The larger stadium seats 7,200 fans – though only 5,200 seats were made publicly available during the Games, and the smaller stadium seats 2,100 spectators – though only 1,200 seats were made publicly available during the Games. The facility was completed on February 29, 2004, and officially opened on August 11, 2004, shortly before the beginning of the Games. During the 2004 Summer Paralympics, the Olympic Hockey Centre was the venue for Football 5-a-side and Football 7-a-side competitions. The hockey centre has since fallen into disuse and disrepair. No hockey has been played at the centre since the end of the 2004 Olympic Games.
