It is a centrepiece of what Pevsner's Guide to Wiltshire described in 1960 as “a stretch of palaces” along Fore Street. Built in around 1720 for the wealthy cloth merchant Robert Houlton, Parade House has an elegant and symmetrical façade typical of the Georgian period. The ground hosted its first Minor Counties Championship match when Wiltshire played Bedfordshire in 1895. From 1895 to present, the ground has hosted 121 Minor Counties Championship matches and 10 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches.The ground has hosted a single first-class match, which came in 1990 when a combined Minor Counties side played the touring Indians. The Indian team contained the likes of Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar. The ground has also hosted List-A matches. The first List-A match played on the ground was between Wiltshire and Yorkshire in the 1987 NatWest Trophy. The station is 24 miles (39 km) south east of Bristol Temple Meads and is managed by Great Western Railway. Originally opened by the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway in 1848 as part of their Thingley Junction to Westbury line, it gained a link to Bath and Bristol nine years later thanks to the Great Western Railway. This is now the main line, as the original route to Chippenham has been singled and reduced to secondary status.
