Fairy Stone State Park

Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area is a 5,321-acre (21.53 km2) Wildlife Management Area in Patrick and Henry counties, Virginia. Named for the fairy stones that are common in the area, it comprises several parcels surrounding much of Fairy Stone State Park and the Philpott Reservoir in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area includes steep slopes and a small amount of bottomland, including an eight-acre (3.2 ha) marsh impoundment set aside for migrating waterfowl. Forests containing oak, hickory, pine, and beech are managed for the benefit of both game animals and other wildlife.Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The area is open to the public for hunting, trapping, hiking, seasonal horseback riding, and primitive camping. Access for persons 17 years of age or older requires a valid hunting or fishing permit, or a WMA access permit.

Spring Valley Rural Historic District is a national historic district located near Fries, Grayson County, Virginia, United States. The district encompasses 184 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, and 1 contributing object in the wooded and agricultural northeastern corner of Grayson County. It includes mostly frame or log structures, with a few brick buildings, and several well-preserved examples of early-19th century log dwellings still in use. Notable buildings include the Knob Fork Primitive Baptist Church (c. 1800), William Bourne House "Walnut Hill" (c. 1790), Austin King House (c. 1847), Tomlinson House (c. 1851), O'Donnell Place (c. 1860), Ephraim Boyer House (c. 1870), John Fielder Farmhouse (c. 1850, c. 1870), Ebenezer Methodist Church and Cemetery (c. 1884), Spring Valley Academy (c. 1880), Glenn Cornett House (1904), and Phipps Bourne Farmstead (1909). Located in the district is the separately listed Stephen G. Bourne House.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

Philpott Lake is a reservoir in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is impounded by Philpott Dam. The lake is at an elevation of 974 feet (297 m), covers an area of 2,900 acres (12 km2), and has a shoreline length of 100 miles (160 km). Philpott Lake extends into Franklin, Henry, and Patrick counties, Virginia. It is bordered by 6,424 acres (26.00 km2) of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed lands.The lake and Philpott Dam were created to control flooding along the Smith River, to generate hydroelectric power, and to provide recreational activities. Construction on Philpott Dam began in 1948 and was completed in 1952.Virginia state record lake trout and coho salmon were caught in Philpott Lake in 1966 and 1971, respectively. The last report of collection of a stocked Pacific salmon in this reservoir was in either late 1972 or January 1973, which may have been either a Chinook salmon or a coho.

Philpott Dam is a concrete, gravity dam on the Smith River in Franklin and Henry counties in the U.S. state of Virginia. It impounds Philpott Lake. Philpott Dam is located about 44 miles (71 km) above the mouth of the Smith River. It is about 7 miles (11 km) upstream from Bassett, Virginia. The Dam and Philpott Lake were created to control flooding along the Smith River, to generate hydroelectric power, and to provide recreational activities in a series of parks around the lake: Philpott Park, Bowens Creek Park, Goose Point Park, Ryans Park, Jamison Mill Park, Horseshoe Point Park, Twin Ridge Park, Salthouse Branch Park, and Tailrace Park (listed clockwise around the lake beginning at the south end of the dam). Construction on Philpott Dam began in 1948 and was completed in 1952. The Philpott Dam Powerhouse was completed and started generating electricity in 1953. The Philpott project is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District. The dam includes a spillway, a powerhouse, and switchyard. The top elevation of Philpott Dam is 1016 feet (310 m) msl and has an overall length of 920 feet (280 m). The maximum height above the streambed is 220 feet (67 m). The spillway has a crest elevation of 985 feet, msl and a total length of 120 feet (37 m) The power house has two vertical shaft Francis turbines rated at 6700 kW each and a smaller unit rated at 600 kW. Electricity from the dam is marketed by the Southeastern Power Administration.The dam is also a noted tourist and recreational area, and a place of great beauty. Over the years, a number of artists and photographers have used the dam site for their compositions. Jessamine Shumate, a local artist, did an early watercolor painting of the Philpott Dam in Henry County, and a second, unfinished painting. These two paintings were done during the construction phase of the dam, and both paintings show the temporary cement factory that was constructed to produce the cement locally. The cement mill was then taken down and removed after the dam was constructed. Her paintings are the only representations from this phase of construction, since most other photographic work concentrated on the construction of the dam itself, and not in the engineering aspects of the construction site. These paintings have recently (2010) been donated to the Philpott Dam. "Relatives of the late artist Ada Jessamine Shumate, who contributed two of her paintings of the construction of Philpott Dam to the dam’s visitor’s center. Jessamine Shumate was a native of Henry County, Virginia, who painted the construction during the 1950s. Sharing the paintings with the public is a fitting tribute to her work and a good way for people to get a sense of what went into creating the dam."

Philpott is an unincorporated community in Henry County, in the U.S. state of Virginia.

John D. Bassett High School, also known as Bassett Middle School, is a historic school building located at Bassett, Henry County, Virginia. It was built in 1947–1948, and is a two-story Georgian Revival style brick school building. A rear addition was built in 1961. It has three bay portico entrances at each end with cupolas above. They provide public access to the two community spaces on the interior – the auditorium at one end and the gymnasium at the other. The building features a hip roof with slate shingles, gabled dormers and octagonal cupolas; and Flemish-bond variant brickwork with corner quoins and a water table. It was replaced by the Bassett High School in 1979, and continued to operate as a middle school. The school closed in 2004.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Old Turner Place, also known as King's Grant One, is a historic home located near Henry, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1804, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, log dwelling with a gable roof and massive gable end chimneys. Also on the property is a contributing smokehouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Bassett is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henry County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,100 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Martinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded along a rail line by the same family that later started Bassett Furniture. Bassett Furniture's headquarters have remained in Bassett since it began in 1902.

Henry is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Virginia, United States. The community is located along Town Creek 12.9 miles (20.8 km) south-southwest of Rocky Mount. Henry has a post office with ZIP code 24102.

R.L. Stone House, also known as Ithaca, is a historic estate located near Bassett, Henry County, Virginia. It was built between 1930 and 1938, and is a two-story, brick dwelling in the Classical Revival style. It sits on a full raised basement and has a slate-covered hipped roof. Also on the property are a contributing garage and workshop, stable, and water pump.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Endicott, Virginia (GNIS FID: 1477306) is a small community in Franklin County, Virginia. Also known as "Long Branch, Virginia". There are only a few buildings left in the community. The elevation of Endicott is 1,158 feet. Endicott appears on the Endicott U.S. Geological Survey Map. Franklin County is in the Eastern Time Zone (UTC -5 hours).

On October 24, 2004, a Beechcraft Super King Air 200 aircraft, registered N501RH and owned by NASCAR team Hendrick Motorsports, crashed into mountainous terrain in Stuart, Virginia, during a missed approach to Blue Ridge Airport in Martinsville, Virginia. The aircraft was transporting eight passengers and two flight crew to Martinsville so they could attend the NASCAR event at Martinsville Speedway that afternoon. All ten people on board were killed; among them, members of the Hendrick family including John Hendrick, president of Hendrick Motorsports, his twin daughters, and Ricky Hendrick, former Busch Series driver and heir to the Hendrick empire. Hendrick Motorsports staff involved includes Kimberly and Jennifer Hendrick, General Manager Jeff Turner, and chief engine builder Randy Dorton. The pilots were Richard Tracy and Elizabeth Morrison. Other passengers include Joe Jackson, an executive at DuPont and Scott Lathram, Tony Stewart's pilot.
