The Battle of Wilson's Wharf (also called the Battle of Fort Pocahontas) was a battle in Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign against Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.On May 24, Confederate Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee's cavalry division (about 2,500 men) attacked the Union supply depot at Wilson's Wharf, on the James River in eastern Charles City, Virginia. They were repulsed by two African American regiments (about 1,100 men) of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) under the command of Brig. Gen. Edward A. Wild, who were in the process of constructing a fortification there, which was subsequently named Fort Pocahontas. The battle was the first combat encounter of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia with African-American troops.

Fort Pocahontas was an earthen fort on the north bank of the James River at Wilson's Wharf, in Charles City County, Virginia which served as a Union supply depot during the American Civil War. The fort was constructed by African-American soldiers of the United States Colored Troops under the command of Brig. Gen. Edward Augustus Wild.

Ruthville is an unincorporated community in Charles City County, Virginia, United States. The community was the central point of the county's free African American population for many years, even before the Civil War (1861–1865). Following Emancipation, the crossroads community included the Mercantile Cooperative Company and Ruthville Training School. The United Sorghum Growers Club also met here. Earlier known by several other names, the name "Ruthville" recalls local resident Ruth Brown. Her name was selected when the Post Office was established there in 1880.

North Bend Plantation is an estate located on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County, Virginia. It is located along State Route 5, a scenic byway which runs between the independent cities of Richmond and Williamsburg.

Kittiewan, originally known as Millford, is a historic plantation house near New Hope, Charles City County, Virginia, US, built in the 18th century. it is a typical Colonial-period medium-size wood-frame Virginia Tidewater plantation house, comprising a 1+1⁄2-story, main section with a gable roof, with an original gable-roofed ell and later lean-to addition. Its first known owner was Dr. William Rickman, the first Director of Hospitals of the Continental Army in Virginia during the American Revolution. Stewardship of the house and surrounding 720 acres (2.9 km2) is administered by the Archeological Society of Virginia. The house and grounds are open to the public by appointment. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Charles City County is a county located in the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. The county is situated southeast of Richmond and west of Jamestown. It is bounded on the south by the James River and on the east by the Chickahominy River. The area that would become Charles City County was first established as "Charles Cittie" by the Virginia Company in 1619. It was one of the first four "boroughs" of Virginia, and was named in honor of Prince Charles, who would later become King Charles I of England. After Virginia became a royal colony, the borough was changed to "Charles City Shire" in 1634, as one of the five original Shires of Virginia. It acquired the present name of Charles City County in 1643. In the 21st century, Charles City County is part of the Greater Richmond Region of the state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 6,773; it is still relatively rural and one of smaller counties in Virginia by population. Its county seat is the community of Charles City.Notable natives include the 9th and 10th presidents of the United States, William Henry Harrison and John Tyler.

Glebe of Westover Parish is a historic home located near Ruthville, Charles City County, Virginia. It built about 1745, as a 1+1⁄2-story, five-bay brick building, with an early 19th-century rear ell. It reflects Colonial and Federal style design elements. It also has an early 20th-century, one-story, frame wing. It was built as a glebe house for Westover Parish. The house was sold into private hands after the 1807 act of the General Assembly requiring the sale of all Virginia glebes.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Binns Hall is an unincorporated community in eastern Charles City County, Virginia, United States. Binns Hall lies at the intersection of the Glebe Lane and Liberty Church Roads. A post office once occupied the Binns Hall Store. The community had two schools and a hall of the Order of St. Lukes. Liberty Baptist Church continues to operate in the community. The historic homes of Binn's Hall listed on the National Register of Historic Places include Poplar Springs, a home of the Joseph Vaiden family;, and Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation, the plantation of Furneau Southall. Other historic homes include Meadow Springs, another Vaiden homestead; and Moss Side, built by Edmund Archer Saunders. The Harwood family cemetery is located on the grounds of Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation.
