Fort Pocahontas

The Battle of Wilson's Wharf (also called the Battle of Fort Pocahontas) was a battle in Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign against Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.On May 24, Confederate Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee's cavalry division (about 2,500 men) attacked the Union supply depot at Wilson's Wharf, on the James River in eastern Charles City, Virginia. They were repulsed by two African American regiments (about 1,100 men) of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) under the command of Brig. Gen. Edward A. Wild, who were in the process of constructing a fortification there, which was subsequently named Fort Pocahontas. The battle was the first combat encounter of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia with African-American troops.

Sherwood Forest Plantation Foundation is located on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County, Virginia. The main plantation house, built in 1730, was the home of the tenth president of the United States, John Tyler (1790–1862) for the last twenty years of his life. It is located on State Route 5, a scenic byway which runs between the independent cities of Richmond and Williamsburg. The house is located approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the river. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

Lower Brandon Plantation (or simply Brandon or Brandon Plantation and initially known as Martin's Brandon) is located on the south shore of the James River in present-day Prince George County, Virginia. The plantation is an active farm and was tended perhaps from 1607 on, and more clearly from 1614 on, making it one of the longest-running agricultural enterprises in the United States. It has an unusual brick mansion in the style of Palladio's "Roman Country House" completed in the 1760s, and was perhaps designed by Thomas Jefferson.The Virginia plantation was established in 1616 by Captain John Martin, one of the original leaders of the Virginia Colony at Jamestown in 1607. The plantation was owned by the Harrison family for over two centuries, from 1700–1926. Restored by Robert Williams Daniel in the early 20th century, it is a National Historical Landmark.

Kittiewan, originally known as Millford, is a historic plantation house near New Hope, Charles City County, Virginia, US, built in the 18th century. it is a typical Colonial-period medium-size wood-frame Virginia Tidewater plantation house, comprising a 1+1⁄2-story, main section with a gable roof, with an original gable-roofed ell and later lean-to addition. Its first known owner was Dr. William Rickman, the first Director of Hospitals of the Continental Army in Virginia during the American Revolution. Stewardship of the house and surrounding 720 acres (2.9 km2) is administered by the Archeological Society of Virginia. The house and grounds are open to the public by appointment. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Binns Hall is an unincorporated community in eastern Charles City County, Virginia, United States. Binns Hall lies at the intersection of the Glebe Lane and Liberty Church Roads. A post office once occupied the Binns Hall Store. The community had two schools and a hall of the Order of St. Lukes. Liberty Baptist Church continues to operate in the community. The historic homes of Binn's Hall listed on the National Register of Historic Places include Poplar Springs, a home of the Joseph Vaiden family;, and Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation, the plantation of Furneau Southall. Other historic homes include Meadow Springs, another Vaiden homestead; and Moss Side, built by Edmund Archer Saunders. The Harwood family cemetery is located on the grounds of Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation.
