Picayune station

Picayune ( pik-ə-YOON) is the largest city in Pearl River County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 11,885 at the 2020 census. The city is located approximately 45 miles (72 km) from New Orleans, Hattiesburg, and Gulfport–Biloxi. The Stennis Space Center is 10 miles (16 km) away. Picayune is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Hammond combined statistical area.

George Washington Carver High School was a public secondary school in Picayune, Mississippi, United States. It served as the high school for black students until the public schools were integrated in 1970. The buildings are now Carver Elementary School.

The Mississippi Army Ammunition Plant was a 13,480-acre (54.6 km2) government-owned, contractor-operated facility in Hancock County, Mississippi that was dedicated on March 31, 1983. Construction in the northern part of the John C. Stennis Space Center facility began on January 8, 1978. The plant was deactivated on March 4, 2009 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure, 2005. The plant was last operated by Mason Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Mason and Hanger-Silas Co., Inc.

The Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (COMNAVMETOCCOM) or CNMOC, serves as the operational arm of the Naval Oceanography Program. Headquartered at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, CNMOC is an echelon three command reporting to United States Fleet Forces Command (USFLTFORCOM). CNMOC's claimancy is globally distributed, with assets on larger ships (aircraft carriers, amphibious ships, and command and control ships), shore facilities at fleet concentration areas, and larger production centers in the US. CNMOC is focused on providing critical environmental knowledge to the warfighting disciplines of Anti-Submarine Warfare; Naval Special Warfare; Mine Warfare; Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance; and Fleet Operations (Strike and Expeditionary), as well as to the support areas of Maritime Operations, Aviation Operations, Navigation, Precise Time, and Astrometry. The Oceanographer of the Navy works closely with the staff of CNMOC to ensure the proper resources are available to meet its mission, to act as a liaison between CNMOC and the Chief of Naval Operations, and to represent the Naval Oceanography Program in inter-agency and international forums.

As of 2012, it is NASA's largest rocket engine test facility. There are over 50 local, state, national, international, private, and public companies and agencies using SSC for their rocket testing facilities.
