Tanton, North Yorkshire

The A172 is a major road in North Yorkshire, and the unitary authority of Middlesbrough, England. It runs from Ingleby Arncliffe to Middlesbrough. The road derives its adumbrated number from 1969 when a thoroughfare link connected South Teesside with the Lackenby Docks in Middlesbrough. Since further urban infrastructure development it has been extended into the North Yorkshire Moors, when it transforms into A174.

An electoral ward of the same name stretches north to Newby and had a population at the 2011 Census of 5,537.Stokesley is about two miles south of the Middlesbrough borough boundary and eight miles south of Middlesbrough town centre. Stokesley is between Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Northallerton in a farming area. Local attractions nearby include Great Ayton, Captain Cook's monument and Roseberry Topping in the North York Moors National Park. From 1894 to 1974 the town was one of the North Riding of Yorkshire's rural district head towns.

It was named after the town of Stokesley, which it contained.The district was enlarged in 1932 when it took in part of the Middlesbrough Rural District. It lost parts in 1968 with the creation of the Teesside county borough.In 1974 the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972. It was split three ways, with the northern parts going to the boroughs of Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough in the new county of Cleveland, and the rest becoming part of the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire. The parishes that went to Stockton were: Castlelevington, Hilton, Ingleby Barwick, Kirklevington, Maltby and Yarm, whilst Nunthorpe went to Middlesbrough.

Stokesley School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Stokesley, North Yorkshire, England.It was established in 1959 as secondary modern school but became a comprehensive in the 1970s. The school converted to academy status in April 2015, however it continues to coordinate with North Yorkshire County Council for admissions, and has an intake of pupils from Stokesley, Great Ayton, Hutton Rudby and the surrounding villages.Stokesley School offers GCSEs, BTECs ASDAN courses as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels.

Newby is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. Close to the border with the borough of Middlesbrough and 7 miles (11 km) from the centre of Middlesbrough. Newby is located 6.3 miles (10.1 km) west from the North York Moors at its closest point, which became a National Park in 1952. According to the United Kingdom Census 2011 Newby had a total population of 214.

Stokesley railway station was a railway station built to serve the town of Stokesley in North Yorkshire, England. The station was on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland line between Sexhow and Ingleby, which opened in 1857. The line was extended progressively until it met the Whitby & Pickering Railway at Grosmont. It was closed in 1954 to passengers and eleven years later to goods. The station was located 16 miles (26 km) south of Stockton and 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Battersby station.

Seamer is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England, near the border with the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees and 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Stokesley. According to the 2011 census, the population of the village was 566, which North Yorkshire County Council estimated had dropped to 560 by 2015.Its name is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Semer(s), with later medieval attestations including Samara. The first element is Old English sǣ 'lake'; the spelling of the second element suggests variation between Old English mere 'sea', Old English mersc 'marsh', and Old Norse marr 'lake, sea, pool'. The dominant meaning of the name therefore seems to have been 'lake by the sea'.This rural village supports a small farming community. There are two churches in the village, a Methodist chapel and St Martin's Church of England. St Martin's is an 1822 rebuild of a medieval church, which was located in the same place. It still retains some 14th-century stained glass and is now grade II listed. The village also has the King's Head pub, and a duck pond on the village green.
