The Palace of the Public Ministry of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Portuguese: Palácio do Ministério Público do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul), or simply Palace of the Public Ministry, also known as Fort Apache (Portuguese: Forte Apache), is a historic building in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. It is located in the Mother Church Square and integrates a complex of buildings of great architectural and historical significance. Due to its multiple uses and design over time, this building received many names, such as Provincial Assembly Building, Provisional Palace, Public Offices Building, and Public Works Building.

The São Pedro Theatre (Theatro São Pedro in Portuguese) is the oldest theatre in the city of Porto Alegre, the state capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Greater Porto Alegre or the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre is the 5th most populous metro area in Brazil, with an estimated population of 4.3 million inhabitants encompassing 34 municipalities around Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Currently, it comprises 10 234,012 km2 with a total population of 4 293 050 inhabitants, according to IBGE data of 2017. Only the metropolitan areas of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Brasília, respectively, are larger than Porto Alegre. Porto Alegre has the 4th largest GDP in the country, estimated at 92 billion dollars. Greater Porto Alegre is a strategic area for the development of the state, the Southern Cone, and the Mercosur, with an economy based on manufacturing, chemicals, automotive, food, education, steel production, semiconductors, and services, to name a few. It possesses an enormous industrial potential and is home to some of the largest companies in Brazil, and also of many multinationals. The region is also home to several technology parks and universities, with the federal university UFRGS being recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC) as the best in Brazil for three years in a row.

Its population of 1,488,252 inhabitants (2020) makes it the 12th-most populous city in the country and the center of Brazil's fifth-largest metropolitan area, with 4,405,760 inhabitants (2010). The city is the southernmost capital city of a Brazilian state.Porto Alegre was founded in 1769 by Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda, who used the pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo to hide his identity; the official date, though, is 1772 with the act signed by immigrants from the Azores, Portugal. The city lies on the eastern bank of the Guaíba Lake, where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos, a giant freshwater lagoon navigable by even the largest of ships. In recent years, Porto Alegre hosted the World Social Forum, an initiative of several nongovernment organizations. The city became famous for being the first city that implemented participatory budgeting. The 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches was held in Porto Alegre in 2006. Since 2000, Porto Alegre also hosts one of the world's largest free software events, called FISL. The city was one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, having previously been a venue for the 1950 FIFA World Cup. In the middle of 2010s, Porto Alegre had a growing wave of violence, being ranked as 39th among the world's 50 most violent cities in 2017. Nevertheless, the number of violent crimes has been dropping steadily since 2018.

Praça Marechal Deodoro, better known as Praça da Matriz (in English: "Matriz Square"), is a historic square in the city of Porto Alegre, the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is located in the heart of the city, in the Historic Center, and has existed since the early days of the capital. It is listed by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage.

Júlio de Castilhos Museum (Portuguese: Museu Júlio de Castilhos) is a museum located in the city of Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). It is the oldest museum in Rio Grande do Sul state. Its collection, over 10 thousand pieces, is Brazilian national heritage, and comprises objects of historical, artistic, ethnographic and archaeological character, mostly related to the history of Rio Grande do Sul. Its sections for the Ragamuffin War and the Paraguayan War are specially rich. The museum also preserves a few but very important examples of sculptures produced within Indian Reductions by Jesuits and indigenous peoples.

The Otávio Rocha Viaduct is an outstanding engineering work in Porto Alegre, capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is located in the city center, at the intersection of the Duque de Caxias Street and Borges de Medeiros Avenue.

Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Rio Grande do Sul is a contemporary art museum in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Created on March 4, 1992 and it is located on the 6th floor of the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana – CCMQ, occupying the Xico Stockinger and Sotero Cosme galleries and the Microgaleria Tatata Pimentel. The MACRS collection comprises 2,229 artworks from the second half of the 20th century to the present, covering various visual art forms. It mainly features Brazilian art, with a focus on contemporary artists from Rio Grande do Sul, along with works by international artists. Its collection consists of works by artists such as Iole de Freitas, Felippe Moraes, Maria Lídia Magliani, Lia Menna Barreto, Dudi Maia Rosa and Vera Chaves Barcellos.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Mother of God (Portuguese: Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Madre de Deus), also called the Metropolitan Cathedral of Porto Alegre (Catedral Metropolitana de Porto Alegre), is the Catholic metropolitan cathedral of Porto Alegre and the seat of the eponymous archdiocese.The founding of the church is closely related to the origin of the city. With the transfer of the state capital of Viamão to Porto dos Casais, it became clear the need to build a new church, with dimensions corresponding to the new status of the city. On July 12, 1772, the viceroy ordered that land for the construction demarcate.This Baroque style cathedral was designed by an unknown architect and has two bell towers flanking the main entrance. These towers were brought from Rio de Janeiro in 1774.The current cathedral was built in 1921–1972.

Clube do Comércio (English: Commerce Club) is based in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Founded in 1896, it is one of the city's most traditional clubs. The headquarters, located on Andradas Street, was listed as a landmark site by the Porto Alegre City Hall in 1996.

The Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul (Portuguese: Assembleia Legislativa do Rio Grande do Sul) is the unicameral legislature of Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil. It has 55 state deputies elected by proportional representation. The first legislature was on April 20, 1835, in the first day of the assembly, the deputy Bento Gonçalves is accused by the president of the province of articulating the separation of the Rio Grande, this marked the beginning of the Ragamuffin War. From September 20, 1835, to June 15, 1836, only the Farrapos attends in the assembly, the revolution also suspends the elections in 1837, the assembly is closed until the second legislature, that begins on March 1, 1846.
