Coundon Grange is a village in the civil parish of Dene Valley, in County Durham, England. It is situated to the east of Bishop Auckland. In the 2001 census Coundon Grange had a population of 235.

The village became a civil parish, with a parish council, on 1 April 2003. It had previously been part of Shildon parish. The population of this civil parish as at the 2011 census was 327.

Close House is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated a short distance to the north of Shildon, near to Eldon and Coundon Grange. In the 2001 census Close House had a population of 296. The famed Gilbert and Sullivan star John Reed was born here in 1916.

Shildon is a town and civil parish in County Durham, in England. The population taken at the 2011 Census was 9,976. The town has the Locomotion Museum, due to it having the first station, built in 1825, and locomotive works on the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

South Church is a village just south of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England. St Andrew's church is the largest church in County Durham and a Grade I listed building. The church was built in the thirteenth century and acted as a collegiate church. The astronomer and mathematician Thomas Wright was buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's after his death in 1786. The area between the River Gaunless and the Bishop Auckland town boundary is currently unparished, but 2023 proposals recommend taking this area into the town. However, the village spills across the Gaunless into Dene Valley parish, so that part is parished already. South Church railway station opened in 1842 but was in operation for only about three years. Nowadays the area is served by Bishop Auckland railway station.

Shildon railway works opened in 1833 in the town of Shildon in County Durham, England. Originally built to serve the Stockton and Darlington Railway the works grew to cover 40 acres (16 ha) (11 acres or 4.5 ha roofed), employing 2,750 staff.

Grange Hill is a hamlet in the civil parish of Dene Valley, in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the south of Coundon, near Bishop Auckland.
