Gail Adrienne Cobb (August 17, 1950 – September 20, 1974) was a Black American police officer from Washington, D.C., the first female police officer in the United States shot and killed in the line of duty. She was also the first uniformed female officer of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (MPDC) to have been killed in the line of duty.

Fairfax Village is a small neighborhood of garden apartments and townhouses located in southeast Washington, D.C. in the Hillcrest area. It is bound by Alabama Avenue SE to the northwest, Pennsylvania Avenue SE to the northeast, Suitland Road to the southwest, and Southern Avenue to the east.

Southern Avenue is one of three boundary streets between Washington, D.C., and the state of Maryland. Following a southwest-to-northeast line, Southern Avenue begins at the intersection of South Capitol Street in Southeast, Washington, D.C., and Indian Head Highway on the Maryland side. It runs for approximately 7 miles (11 km) to its other end at Eastern Avenue in Northeast, Washington, D.C., with an uncompleted gap between Naylor Road SE and Branch Avenue SE. Southern Avenue was built in pieces. For example, the portion between Benning Road SE and 46th Street SE was not started until 1928. One of the first residential developments on Southern Avenue was Fairfield, a cluster of luxury homes at the intersection of Highview Terrace SE and 34th Street SE in the Summit Park neighborhood.The Southern Avenue bridge over Suitland Parkway was the first orthotropic deck girder bridge built in Washington, D.C.

Cedar Hill Cemetery, previously known as Forest Lake Cemetery, and also formerly Nonesuch Plantation, is a cemetery located in Suitland, Maryland.

The Washington National Records Center (WNRC) in Suitland, Maryland, stores and references records of U.S. Federal agencies located in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.Physical records are transferred to WNRC when they are no longer needed by the respective agencies but have not met their scheduled retention period, including the records of the Federal Courts in DC and the Armed Forces. Those records remain at the WNRC until acceptance as permanent records by the National Archives, or else they are destroyed and recycled. The records are tracked individually in a database from the time they arrive at the WNRC. While court records are freely available to the public, the majority of records are controlled by their respective originating agency, and all records are subject to the access restrictions specific to that agency and national security classification. The WNRC encompasses approximately 789,000 square feet (73,300 m2) of space and has a capacity to hold over 3.9 million cubic feet (110,000 m3) of Federal records. Security systems, and fire suppression systems protect the records in the Center. Upon arrival, visitors to the Center must go through security, sign in, and present photo identification at the guard's station in the entrance lobby. In 2007, the WNRC opened a new Electronic Records Vault. The 976 square-foot vault allows Federal Records Centers to store and service temporary electronic records for Federal agencies. This was after a major criminal fire on Tuesday, 29 February 2000, which destroyed 700,000 pages, as reported by archives officials.

Naylor Road is an island-platformed Washington Metro station in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, United States. The station was opened on January 13, 2001, and is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Providing service for only the Green Line, the station is located between Naylor Road, Branch Avenue, and Suitland Parkway. Groundbreaking for the final segment of the Green Line occurred on September 23, 1995, and the station opened on January 13, 2001. Its opening coincided with the completion of approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) of rail southeast of the Anacostia station and the opening of the Branch Avenue, Congress Heights, Southern Avenue, and Suitland stations. The station won an award from the Portland Cement Association for its use of concrete.

Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library is part of the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) System. It was originally opened to the public in 1961. A new building on the same site, designed by award-winning architect David Adjaye opened on June 19, 2012.

The U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) is a tri-agency operational center whose mission is to provide worldwide navigational ice analyses for the armed forces of the United States, allied nations, and U.S. government agencies. It is represented by the United States Navy (Department of Defense); the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Department of Commerce); and the United States Coast Guard (Department of Homeland Security). The U.S. National Ice Center is a subordinate command of the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO). Originally known as the Navy/NOAA Joint Ice Center, which was established on December 15, 1976 in a memorandum of agreement between the U.S. Navy and NOAA, the National Ice Center was formed in 1995 when the U.S. Coast Guard became a partner. The U.S. National Ice Center produces global sea ice charts and various cryospheric GIS products. They also name and track Antarctic icebergs if greater than 10 nautical miles (20 km) on its longest axis. Icebergs must be a minimum of 19 kilometers in length to be tracked by the USNIC.

The National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO) is a United States Navy entity located in the National Maritime Intelligence Center (NMIC) Facility in Suitland, Maryland, southeast of Washington, D.C. In 1991 the NMIC was built on the location of 3 baseball fields used by the Census Bureau at the Suitland Federal Center.The mission statement of NMIO is as follows: Advance maritime intelligence integration, information sharing, and domain awareness to foster unity of effort for decision advantage that protects the United States, its allies, and partners against threats in or emanating from the global maritime domain. The NMIO was established due to guidance from the 9/11 Commission, The Intelligence Reform and Terror Prevention Act (IRTPA), Presidential directives, and maritime security plans. Its goal is to support national policymakers and decision-makers on naval issues and perform actions as directed by ODNI Strategic Guidance to create unity of effort and position leaders for decision advantage decisively and efficiently. The office's efforts focus on collaboration between Federal, state, local, tribal and territorial governments, acting in concert with the U.S. Government's international partners and representatives from the private sector and academia.NMIO is co-located with the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), the Naval Information Warfare Activity (NIWA), and the Coast Guard Intelligence Coordination Center (ICC).The Director of the NMIO is Rear Admiral Michael W. Studeman, USN; the Deputy Director is Captain Gene Anzano, USCG.

The Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility, also known colloquially as "Silver Hill", is a storage and former conservation and restoration facility of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, located in Suitland, Maryland, United States. Located adjacent to the Museum Support Center – a facility that serves the same purpose for other Smithsonian museums – the Paul E. Garber Facility was once the main artifact restoration facility of the National Air and Space Museum. The museum still stores aircraft and other artifacts at the Paul E. Garber Facility, but most storage and restoration functions have relocated to the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The facility is not open to the public. It is named in honor of Paul E. Garber, a Smithsonian curator who devoted most of his career to maintaining a collection of historic aircraft. It was created in the early 1950s by Garber to store, protect the museum's growing collection of World War II aircraft and provide space to restore them. The facility consists of 32 unassuming metal buildings. 19 of those buildings are devoted to storage of airplanes, spacecraft, engines, and various parts awaiting restoration. One building formerly housed a large restoration shop, and three buildings are for exhibition creation. To date, the largest restoration project undertaken by the Garber Facility was the B-29 Superfortress, Enola Gay. Work began in 1984. The fuselage alone took 10 years of work. The aircraft was finally delivered to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in 11 tractor trailer loads over the space of three months in 2003.Approximately 65 space suits from the Mercury, Apollo, and other U.S. space programs were formerly stored at the facility in an environmentally-controlled room; these have now been moved to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The roof collapsed on the facility's Warehouse #21 just before dawn on February 10, 2010 during a blizzard and the region's second 15 to 30 inch snowstorm during a five-day period. The warehouse, scheduled for eventual demolition after transfer of the artifacts to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, contained historic aircraft and spacecraft that were exposed to sub-freezing temperatures and blowing snow. They were not thought to be damaged, as all were in protective boxes or crates on shelving units that were still supporting parts of the warehouse.

The Smithsonian Institution's Museum Support Center (MSC) is a collections storage and conservation facility in Suitland, Maryland which houses Smithsonian collections which are not on display in the museums. It is not usually open to the public, due to security concerns, though occasionally special tours are organized.More than 54 million collections items are housed at the MSC. This comprises approximately 40 percent of the Smithsonian's collection which is not on display, while the rest of the objects are housed behind-the-scenes in the museums themselves or at other off-site storage facilities.The collections are housed in five numbered buildings, called "Pods," each about the size of a 3-story-tall football field. The pods total 435,000 square feet of collections storage space. Notable features include "enormous tanks for cleaning whale skulls, chambers to preserve Antarctic meteorites, art from throughout the ages, and a botany collection with five greenhouses."The MSC was dedicated in May 1983, after two years of construction and ten years of planning. It opened with the first four pods, plus offices, labs, and plans to expand into two additional pods. The fifth pod was dedicated in April 2007 at the east end of the MSC, and now houses all of the National Museum of Natural History's biological collections (25 million specimens) preserved in fluids, known as the "wet collections."The environment within the MSC is strictly controlled in order to minimize impact on collections, and is based on research by engineers at the Museum Conservation Institute (located at the MSC) and the Smithsonian's Office of Facilities, Engineering and Operations. The target temperature is generally set at 70 degrees Fahrenheit (+/- 4 degrees), with relative humidity at 45 percent (+/- 8 percent).In its laboratory and office areas, the MSC houses the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute (MCI), the Laboratories of Analytical Biology (LAB) and other numerous departments from the National Museum of Natural History, including the Department of Anthropology, the National Anthropological Archives (NAA), the Human Studies Film Archives (HSFA), the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit (WRBU), as well as branch of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries.
