Doncaster ( DONK-ə-stər, DONK-ast-ər) is a city in South Yorkshire, England. Named after the River Don, it is the administrative centre of the larger City of Doncaster, and is the second largest settlement in South Yorkshire after Sheffield. Noted for its horse racing and railway history, it is situated in the Don Valley on the western edge of the Humberhead Levels and east of the Pennines. The urban subdivision had a population of 113,566 at the 2021 census, whilst the City of Doncaster metropolitan borough had a population of 308,106.The city's suburbs include Armthorpe, Bessacarr, Sprotbrough among others. Adjacent to Doncaster to its east is the Isle of Axholme in Lincolnshire, which contains the towns of Haxey, Epworth and Crowle, and directly south is Harworth Bircotes in Nottinghamshire. Also, within the city's vicinity are Barnsley, Wakefield, Pontefract, Selby, Goole, Scunthorpe, Gainsborough, Retford, Worksop and Rotherham, to which Doncaster is linked by road and rail. As part of the Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours, Doncaster received city status by Letters Patent. A ceremony to confer city status took place at Mansion House on 9 November 2022 as part of a tour of Yorkshire by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Doncaster Mansion House is a Grade I listed building in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is owned and managed by Doncaster Council. The Mansion House stands on the site of the Carmelite Friary, which had been established in Doncaster in 1350 and remained until its dissolution on 13 November 1538, after which the buildings were destroyed. During the 18th century, Doncaster's position on the Great North Road brought wealth to the town. The town's corporation was frequently called on to host entertainments, initially at the mayor's house or the Angel or Three Cranes inns. In 1719, they took a lease on a house in the High Street for holding feasts, but let this lapse around 1727. They bought a site on the High Street in 1738, with the intention of building a permanent base for entertaining, but little construction took place for several years. In 1746, James Paine was appointed as architect in 1746. Although young, Paine had already worked on Nostell Priory and had designed Heath House, both near Wakefield.Mansion Houses had already been constructed in Newcastle upon Tyne (now demolished), York and London. Whereas these other buildings contained both formal reception rooms and living quarters for the mayor, Doncaster's differed in being designed purely for entertainment, although some later mayors used space in the building as accommodation.Paine planned a building along the now established designs of Assembly Rooms. It was completed in 1748 and officially opened in 1749, the construction having cost £8,000. Paine was immediately offered more local work, starting with alterations to Cusworth Hall. He published his designs for the Mansion House in 1751. This work showed the building flanked by two other structures, marked as houses for the town clerk and recorder, but these were never part of the commission and were not built.William Lindley extended the building between 1801 and 1806, adding an attic storey, a rear banqueting hall and rear landing.

The Corn Exchange is a trading space and events venue in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. The structure, which was commissioned as a corn exchange, is part of a Grade II* listed complex.

The Danum shield was a Roman shield found in the Danum Roman fort at Doncaster in 1971. It was discovered amid the remains of a bonfire and may have been intentionally disposed of during the partial abandonment of the fort. The shield was rectangular in shape and measured approximately 0.65 metres (2.1 ft) by 1.25 metres (4.1 ft). It is considered to have been part of the equipment of a Roman auxilium (non-citizen) soldier. An assessment in the 1970s considered it to have had an unusual vertical hand grip, suggesting a possible use by cavalry. However a recent work suggests the handgrip may have been horizontal and the shield used by an infantryman. The shield was covered in leather and was probably painted, though its original colour is not known. The outer face was decorated with bronze sheeting, possibly incised with a Celtic pattern. The iron boss and handgrip, together with other iron and bronze remains, are on display at the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery. A reconstruction of the shield, made in 1978, is also on display. The exhibition is due to relocate to the new Danum Gallery, Library and Museum later in 2020.

Doncaster Minster, formally the Minster and Parish Church of St George, is the Anglican minster church of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is a grade I listed building and was designed by architect designer George Gilbert Scott. The church was built in 1854–1858 to replace an earlier building destroyed by fire. It is an active place of worship and has a Schulze organ, a ring of eight bells, and a celebrated clock by Dent. The church is one of two parish churches to have minster status in South Yorkshire. The other is the minster church of Rotherham.

The Frenchgate Shopping Centre (formerly Arndale Centre) is a large shopping centre located in the city centre of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is named after the street of the same name that formed one of the old gates of medieval Doncaster. The centre has been the heart of the city for over 40 years and was originally called the Arndale Centre because it was built, owned and managed by the Arndale Group. It was renamed in 1988 after a change of ownership, with the new name reflecting the name of the street which passes to the east of the centre and which is one of Doncaster's main shopping streets. The sale of the centre came just a year after Frenchgate had undergone a £200 million facelift to transform it into the country's first shopping centre with integrated public transport and retail interchange. Before the change of name from Arndale to Frenchgate Centre, the centre was home to a controversial statue entitled 'The Lovers', which depicted a naked couple in a passionate embrace and which was the subject of many complaints from mothers who claimed that it was not appropriate for young children to see.In 2004 the Northern Bus Station and Gresley House, which were located on the northern side of Trafford Way, the road that passed round the northern side of the Frenchgate Centre, and where the rear entrance and service areas were located, were demolished to make way for a new Transport interchange and extension to the Frenchgate Centre. As part of this project the centre also received a major multimillion-pound refurbishment, incorporating the centre into the new transport interchange. During the building of the extension, which involved building a tunnel over Trafford Way, part of the tunnel collapsed, severely injuring one of the building workers from the site.The extension and transport interchange opened to the public on 8 June 2006.

The Grand Theatre is a closed theatre in Doncaster, in South Yorkshire in England. Station Road in Doncaster was widened in 1882. Following this, Frederick William Masters constructed a new circus hall on the street, noted for its lower walls being six feet thick, in order to support the weight of the elephants. The building was soon sold to the Salvation Army, and then in 1896 to J. W. Chapman, who renamed it the "People's Picture Palace", and showed the first films in the town.Chapman had previously run a small theatre in Doncaster Market Place, and in 1898 he had the hall rebuilt as a new theatre, to a design by John Priestley Briggs. Part of the frontage was retained. It opened on 27 March 1899, with a performance of "la Poupee". In the 1930s, the theatre was altered, with its capacity reduced from 1,600 to 1,300. In the 1960s, the Arndale Centre was constructed in the area, with the other properties on Station Road demolished, but the theatre was retained. The theatre became a bingo hall in 1963, and closed in 1995. It was Grade II listed in 1994.In 2006, the building was added to the new Theatres at Risk Register. In 2021, a study was undertaken into reopening the building as a theatre. It concluded that it could be viable, with a reduced capacity of 400 to 500, but would have to be reopened on a phased basis, and that urgent repair works were needed first.The three-storey theatre is built of brick, with a painted stucco facade. The front is curved, and the ground floor has Doric pilasters and round arched doorways. There is a full-length cast iron balcony on the first floor, and the upper floors are decorated with Ionic pilasters and various round-headed arches, some containing doors and windows and others blank. Inside, there are two curved galleries, a stage with a proscenium arch, and a decorative plaster ceilling.

It specialises in engineering, particularly railway engineering, and its newly constructed building in the town centre has capacity for 750 students.The UTC received a "Good" Ofsted inspection in 2022.
