Sowerby-under-Cotcliffe is a civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was less than 100. It is 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Northallerton, 0.5 miles (0.8 km) south of Kirby Sigston, and 1.2 miles (2 km) west of the A19 road. The Cod Beck river flows to the east of the parish forming a border with KIrby Sigston and Landmoth-cum-Catto civil parishes. In 2011, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to be 40, which had dropped to 30 by a 2015 estimate. The area was recorded in the Domesday Book as belonging to King William and having 75 ploughlands with 100 acres (40 ha) of meadows. The name is a combination of the Old Norse Saurbi meaning swampy farmstead, and koteclyf, meaning Bank by the cottage. At the turn of the 19th century, a Roman Road was uncovered when building work was being undertaken to build a new road. The 72-mile (116 km) route went from Barmby to Stamford Bridge, Thirsk and then onto Durham.

There was a violent gas explosion in Ellerbeck in the late 1990s which destroyed a house in the village but did not cause any deaths.

The settlement was mentioned in the Domesday Book and the name of the hamlet derives from the Old English Lece or Lecan which means to drip or leak. All other places in England that are named Leake are situated near to water and an alternative etymology would be that Lece may be an Old English word for brook.Leake Hall is a grade II* listed house which dates from the 17th century. Originally built in 3 storeys to an H-shaped floor plan it now has a T-shaped layout with a 6-bay frontage. It is now a farmhouse.The grade I listed Church of St Mary dates from Norman times. The Norman tower has a Saxon cross built into it. The bench ends for the choir stalls in the chancel were rescued from Bridlington Priory at the Dissolution.

It is on the A168 road and 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Northallerton.It is in the Thornton's electoral ward for district elections and the District Councillor is Bob Baker. The population of this electoral ward taken at the 2011 Census was 1,852. The village is currently in the Thirsk and Malton Parliamentary constituency, whose incumbent is Kevin Hollinrake.The village has one pub called The Crosby behind which there is a campsite. In 2007 the Pub won "Best Pub Grub" in the Flavours of Hambleton Awards. There is a Methodist Chapel at the east end of the village and a Chapel of Ease at the west end. The graveyard looks over the Vale of York. The author Bill Bryson famously stated in his book Notes From a Small Island that he wants to be buried in Thornton-le-Beans, due to the oddness of the name.
