Chillerton and Gatcombe

Chillerton is a village between Newport and Chale in the Isle of Wight in southern England. Chillerton is in the middle of a farming community. It is in the civil parish of Chillerton and Gatcombe, along with nearby Gatcombe; the parish had a total population of 422 at the 2011 census.The nearby Chillerton Down is the site of an unfinished Iron Age promontory fort and a 229-metre (751 ft) antenna for the Isle of Wight radio station broadcasting on 107.00 MHz, as well as several other stations. It is the village's most prominent feature and can be seen from most parts of the island. It is known as the Chillerton Down transmitting station. Chillerton Down is flown by Paragliders in a E to SE wind and on days with good thermals the top of the mast can be reached. In 1907, a contract was signed that ensured that properties older than 1907 in Chillerton and nearby Gatcombe would receive free water, while newer homes receive it at a reduced rate. In 2009 Southern Water proposed that everyone to pay the same rate, claiming that the reasoning behind the initial pact is now invalid, as the costs for the original project have since been paid off.Originally, the main school was Chillerton and Rookley Primary School, located on the Main Road in Chillerton. It was a small village school with a total of 43 students on roll from local areas as of 2008. However, in 2010 it was announced that the school would be combining with primary schools in Godshill and Wroxall. The new school would have two campuses, in Godshill and Wroxall.Public transport is provided by Southern Vectis bus route 6, which runs between Newport and Ventnor and Wightbus route 36, running between Newport and Moortown.

Sheat Manor is a manor house in Chillerton, on the Isle of Wight, England. Considered to be one of the island's antiquities, Sheat manor house, is a fine old gabled mansion now used as a farmhouse. It has a pond and swans. It contains some interesting Jacobite carving. Sheat was one of the few properties whose Anglo-Saxon owner, Alaric, was not disturbed by the Norman invasion. It was run by the Urry family for some time.

Gatcombe is a village in the civil parish of Chillerton and Gatcombe, on the Isle of Wight, England. It is located about two and a half miles south of Newport, in the centre of the island. The parish, which includes Chillerton, had a population of 422 at the 2011 census.

Gatcombe House is a 15,234 sq ft (1,415.3 m2) manor house in Gatcombe on the Isle of Wight, England. The original building was constructed by the Stur (Estur) family as noted in the Domesday Book. St. Olave's Church, built next to the manor to serve as its chapel, was dedicated in 1292. It also belonged at one time to the Lisles of Wootton.The present stone building stands in hanging woods. It was erected in 1750 by Sir Edward Meux Worsley (c. July 1716 – August 14, 1762), and is typical of the country houses of the time of George III. The manor was afterwards purchased by Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton. It was later owned by Sir Charles Seely, 1st Baronet. Gatcombe House has been a Grade II*-listed building since July 1951.

St Olave's Church, Gatcombe is a parish church in the Church of England located in Gatcombe, Isle of Wight. It is grouped with Sts Thomas Minster, Newport, St John's, Newport and St Mary's, Carisbrooke.

Pidford Manor is a manor house in Rookley, on the Isle of Wight, England. It is a five-bay Georgian style home on 11 acres (4.5 ha), accessed from the A3020 roadway. Built in the mid to late 18th century, the front is of red bick. A doorcase features an open pediment over an arched doorway, while the interior has a Chinese Chippendale well staircase. The stable (c. 1795) at Pidford Manor became a Grade II listed building in 1993.

Rookley is a village and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. It is located five kilometres south of Newport near the centre of the island. It has a country park on the site of the last working Isle of Wight brickworks. There is a pub at the country park and another, the "Chequers", a short distance from the village. The latter was the centre of the island's smuggling trade in the 18th century. Southern Vectis bus route 3 serves the village on its way between Newport, Ventnor, Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde, including intermediate villages.The Village Association Playing Field in Highwood Lane hosts Godshill Cricket Club who compete in Division Two of the Harwoods Renault Isle of Wight League. It is also home to Rookley Football Club which is managed by Paul Wright. Rookley have two teams in the island leagues: their firsts in League 2 and reserves in Combination 2. Two major events are held in the field each year: Gardening Galore and Rookley Show.

The Isle of Wight Rural District was a rural district on the Isle of Wight from 1894 to 1974 covering most of the island, apart from urban areas. In 1933, the district was reduced by the creation of the Sandown-Shanklin and Ventnor urban districts. In 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, it was merged with these two urban districts to form the new non-metropolitan South Wight district.

Cridmore Bog is a 14.4-hectare (36-acre) Site of special scientific interest which is west of Godshill. The site was notified in 1985 for its biological features. It is adjacent to "The Wilderness", another SSSI in this area of the Isle of Wight

Billingham Manor (or Billingham House) is a manor house lying about a mile south of the village of Chillerton on the Isle of Wight. The oldest part of the house dates from 1631. The house was largely remodelled a hundred years later by Edward Worsley, son of Sir Edward Worsley of Gatcombe House. The house was owned at one time by J.B. Priestley. Considered to be one of the island's antiquities, it is a Grade II* listed building since 1951.It was the seat of the Worsley family, and owned at one time by a Mrs. Lawrence. British novelist, poet, writer and reviewer Olivia Manning was cremated and her ashes buried at the manor. At the time it was rented by Sir Shane Leslie, Billingham was regarded as the most haunted house on the Island.

Whitecroft Hospital was a mental health facility near to Gatcombe on the Isle of Wight, England. The clock tower is a Grade II listed building.
