Wembury Marine Centre

Wembury is a village on the south coast of Devon, England, very close to Plymouth Sound. Wembury is located south of Plymouth. Wembury is also the name of the peninsula in which the village is situated. The village lies in the administrative district of the South Hams within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The South West Coast Path goes past the coastal end of the town. The National Trust has taken an active role in maintaining the scenic and historic characteristics of the village and its surrounding area The beach is well known for its surfing and rock pooling. Wembury Marine Centre educates visitors about what they can find in the rockpools and how they can help protect and preserve them. The centre is managed by Devon Wildlife Trust and was refurbished in 2006. Basking sharks can be seen in the summer near the Mewstone. There is also Wembury primary school There are three pubs within the Wembury parish; the Eddystone Inn, Mussell Inn and the Odd Wheel (the Oddy). Three shops are also in Wembury; Down Thomas stores, Wembury stores and Wembury Spar. The Spar was a Knighton Store before it was taken over in April 2012. Its electoral ward is called 'Wembury and Brixton'. The ward population at the 2011 census was 4,455.

The Yealm is a river in Devon in England that rises 430 m (1,410 ft) above sea level on the Stall Moor mires of south Dartmoor and travels 12 miles (19 km) to the sea, passing through Cornwood, Lee Mill and Yealmpton, a mid-sized village with a population of c.2,000 which is its largest settlement, before reaching its estuary which forms a ria bounded on its western side by Wembury. A deep inlet of this ria forms the waterfront to Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo on its eastern side.

Langdon Court is a former manor house, in Wembury, South Devon, England. It consists of a single courtyard mansion from 1693 and a walled formal garden. The house is a Grade II* listed building, and the garden is Grade II listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In 1960 it was bought and converted into the Langdon Court Hotel.

Warren Point is a promontory in South Devon, located southeast of Plymouth. The Warren Point foot ferry links Wembury, on the western side of the River Yealm, to both Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo on the eastern side of the river. This crossing is popular with hikers walking along the South West Coast Path.

Down Thomas is a village in Devon, England. The village is situated about 4 miles south of Plymouth. It is on the Wembury peninsula and is surrounded by farmland. The village is a part of the South Hams local government district. The village has a pub, post office, bike shop and a local village store. The population is 230. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Manor Farm was the owning building of the area. It burnt down in 1800 and the salvaged wood was used to build the new house on the same site.

Casa del Rio ("House on the River") is an Art Deco house built in 1936 to a Spanish theme, on the banks of the river Yealm at Newton Ferrers, South Hams, Devon, England.Once owned by the Berkertex family, the house was commissioned by the baker Walter Price, who had visited California in the 1920s, to research the bread trade there, and had met Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford at their house, Pickfair, which served as Price's inspiration.The house's features include a marble staircase made to look like a piano keyboard, and an outdoor swimming pool, since filled in and grassed over. The exterior is white stucco. A basement bar, pool room and cinema have been added in modern times, in the former garage.As of 2010, the house was available to rent as a holiday residence sleeping 20. The former servants' quarters are now a separate, ten-bedroom family home. In 2013, a full episode of the BBC programme "Art Deco Icons", presented by David Heathcote, featured the house.

Noss Mayo is a village in the civil parish of Newton and Noss in the South Hams district of Devon, England, 6 miles (10 km) south-east of Plymouth, one mile (1.6 km) inland on the southern bank of Newton Creek, an arm of the estuary of the River Yealm. On the opposite, northern, bank of the creek is Newton Ferrers. The first documentary reference of Noss Mayo was in 1286 as Nesse Matheu. The manor here was held by Matheu son of John from 1284 to 1309.The village's church, dedicated to Saint Peter, was built in 1880–1882 at the expense of Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke (head of Barings Bank) to a design by James Piers St Aubyn. It took over from the Church of St Peter the Poor Fisherman, Revelstoke, which was built in 1226, on the coast one mile (1.6 km) to the south.

HMS Cambridge was a Royal Navy shore establishment south of Plymouth UK, commissioned between 1956 and 2001. Formerly named HM Gunnery School, Devonport, then Cambridge Gunnery School at Wembury. The site was called HMS Cambridge after a ship of the same name an 80-gun third-rate ship of the line that was used to train seamen in gunnery in Plymouth harbour from 1856. She was replaced by the first rate HMS Windsor Castle (renamed HMS Cambridge) in 1869 before the gunnery school was moved onto land at the Plymouth naval barracks in 1907. This lasted until 1940 when a gunnery range used by the army and navy was opened at the old Wembury Point Holiday Camp (on the present site) which was named the Cambridge Gunnery School. In 1956 the school was commissioned as an independent shore establishment and was decommissioned on 30 March 2001. The site was purchased in 2006 by the National Trust; the main installation, which included mounts for a range of standard naval guns, was demolished and cleared, and the site returned to nature.

Coombe Dean School Academy, opened in 1976, is a secondary school located on the outskirts of Plymouth, Devon, England. As of April 2018, it had 970 pupils. The school gained Specialist School status in September 2003. Ofsted awarded the school 'Outstanding' status in 2009 and 2012. However, in November 2018 the school received 'Requires Improvement'. The school’s latest Ofsted report, in March 2022, returned a grading of ‘Good’. Improvements to the school’s progress 8 outcomes have placed it favourably in the rankings of other non-selective Plymouth schools. The school’s progress outcomes for disadvantaged learners in 2023 were significantly above the national average. The school’s values are Community, Integrity and Opportunity. As a high performing school, Coombe Dean was given the option to become an independent academy in 2010, which was actioned in September 2011. In 2004, work started on building a larger hall, an all-weather AstroTurf pitch and an extended Mathematics facility with eight new classrooms. A new English block with geothermal heat pump was built in 2007 and renovations to the Technology block were completed in 2008. Also in July 2008, solar panels were integrated into the roof of the School Drama Hall. A new Post-16 block was built as an extension to the Art block in 2012, and an overhaul to the PE block was completed in the summer of 2013. The Science (C) block was renovated to a modern specification in 2013, and the Library (D) block has been updated and extended to incorporate an extended Student Services / Inclusion department (L block.) The school offers The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and takes part in the annual Ten Tors event. Other applied learning events include; European exchange weeks, tall ships voyages and a sailing school. During the Easters of 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, students from the school visited Everest Base Camp to donate computer equipment and clothing to a Nepalese school.

Watch House Battery is a former 19th-century gun battery, built as one of a number of batteries to defend the Eastern approaches to Plymouth Sound, for the defence of the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport. The battery was originally built as a small pentagonal redoubt with emplacements for five guns. By 1893 it was armed with two 64 Pounder Rifled Muzzle Loading Guns. In 1901 the battery was reconstructed for two 6-inch Mark VII breech loading guns with the work being completed in 1903. During the First World War the battery was manned by the Devonshire Royal Garrison Artillery.After the Second World War the battery remained armed until the dissolution of coast artillery in the United Kingdom in 1956 when it was disarmed. It was released by the military and subsequently used as a children's activity centre for some years. It was Grade II listed in 1969.

Holy Cross Church is a Church of England parish church in Newton Ferrers, Devon, England. The existing church has 13th-century origins, with a major restoration and rebuild of 1885–86. Holy Cross has been a Grade I listed building since 1960.

St Peter's Church is a Church of England parish church in Noss Mayo, Devon, England. It was constructed in 1880–82 and designed by the London architect James Piers St Aubyn. St Peter's has been Grade II* listed since 1960.
