Augsburg Innenstadt (German: inner city) is one of the seventeen highest level civic divisions, or Planungsräume (planning district), of the city of Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. Located in the centre of the city, it is the most populated planning district, home to 49,222 residents as of December 31, 2022.

The Battle of Lechfeld was a series of military engagements over the course of three days from 10–12 August 955 in which the Kingdom of Germany, led by King Otto I the Great, annihilated the Hungarian army led by Harka Bulcsú and the chieftains Lél and Súr. With the German victory, further invasions by the Magyars into Latin Europe were ended. The Hungarians invaded the Duchy of Bavaria in late June or early July 955 with 8,000–10,000 horse archers, infantry, and siege engines, intending to draw the main German army, under Otto I, into battle in the open field and destroy it. The Hungarians laid siege to Augsburg on the river Lech. Otto I advanced to relieve the city with an army of 8,000 heavy cavalry, divided into eight legions. As Otto I approached Augsburg on 10 August, a Hungarian surprise attack destroyed the Duchy of Bohemia rearguard legion. The Hungarian force stopped to plunder the German camp and Conrad, Duke of Lorraine led a counter-attack with heavy cavalry, dispersing the Hungarians. Otto I then brought his army into battle against the main Hungarian army that barred his way to Augsburg. The German heavy cavalry defeated the lightly armed and armored Hungarians in close combat, but the latter retreated in good order. Otto I did not pursue, returning to Augsburg for the night and sending out messengers to order all local German forces to hold the river crossings in Eastern Bavaria and prevent the Hungarians from returning to their homeland. On 11 and 12 August, the Hungarian defeat was transformed into disaster, as heavy rainfall and flooding slowed the retreating Hungarians and allowed German troops to hunt them down and kill them all. The Hungarian leaders were captured, taken to Augsburg and hanged. The German victory preserved the Kingdom of Germany and halted nomad incursions into Western Europe for good. Otto I was proclaimed emperor and father of the fatherland by his army after the victory and he went on to be crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 962 largely on the basis of his strengthened position after the Battle of Lechfeld.

The Maximilianstraße is a street in the old-town area of Augsburg in Germany. It is one of the city's most historic streets and is the site of the Fuggerhäuser.

The Schaezlerpalais is a baroque palace in Augsburg. The palace extends far back from the street, encompassing dozens of rooms, courtyards and gardens. The gilded mirrored ballroom was built between 1765-1770 and has survives intact. it is widely regarded as the most artistically significant Rococo ballroom in Germany. Carl Albert von Lespilliez was the architect of the Schaezlerpalais. The Free State of Bavaria has declared the Schaezlerpalais a registered historic monument. The Schaezlerpalais houses the following art collections: Deutsche Barockgalerie, Southern German paintings of the 17th and 18th century (1st floor) Karl und Magdalene Haberstock-Stiftung Baroque paintings, e.g. Paolo Veronese, Canaletto, Anthony van Dyck and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (2nd floor) Staatsgalerie Altdeutsche Meister with paintings from Southern Germany of the 15th and 16th century (in a former monastery ["Katharinenkloster"]), a subsidiary of Bavarian State Picture Collection (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen)Adjacent to the building complex, a Baroque garden is open to the public.

The Deutsche Barockgalerie is an art gallery housed in the Schaezlerpalais in Augsburg. It was set up in 1958 and displays works from the Baroque period from the city's collection (the Städtische Kunstsammlungen Augsburg) and from private lenders. The magnificent and extensive collection on display includes works by Caravaggio, Dürer, Holbein, Tiepolo and Cranach.

The Fuggerhäuser (Fugger houses) is a complex of houses on the Maximilianstraße in Augsburg, built for the Fugger family of businessmen. It is now owned by the Fugger-Babenhausen branch of the Fugger family who resides at Wellenburg castle in Augsburg and in Babenhausen, Bavaria.

The Fuggerei is the world's oldest public housing complex still in use. It is a walled enclave within the city of Augsburg, Bavaria. It takes its name from the Fugger family and was founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Younger (known as "Jakob Fugger the Rich") as a place where the needy citizens of Augsburg could be housed. By 1523, 52 houses had been built, and in the coming years the area expanded with various streets, small squares and a church. The gates were locked at night, so the Fuggerei was, in its own right, very similar to a small independent medieval town. It is still inhabited today, affording it the status of being the oldest public housing project in the world.

The Basilica of SS. Ulrich and Afra (German: Basilika SS. Ulrich and Afra) is a Catholic parish in Augsburg in Bavaria, which originated from the Roman tomb of St. Afra, who was martyred in 304. The building is a great example of Gothic architecture in Germany; in its interior it conserves three enormous and very precious altars of Renaissance, each of which is considered a masterpiece of the German sculpture of the period. Its high bell tower with an "onion" dome, which dominates the city to the south, served as a prototype for the construction of numerous baroque towers of Bavaria. In 1577 (officially) and 1643–1644 (virtually) the church, which was called the Benedictine abbey of Saints Ulrich and Afra, was elevated to the rank of imperial abbey. On October 18, 1777, a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart organ concert was held. On May 4, 1782, Pope Pius VI celebrated Mass in the basilica. Secularized in 1802, it entered the possession of the State of Bavaria. In 1810 the church was elevated to a parish church. From July 4, 1937, it was declared by Pope Pius XI as a minor basilica. On May 4, 1987, it was visited by Pope John Paul II.

St. Ulrich's and St. Afra's Abbey, Augsburg (German: Kloster Sankt Ulrich und Afra Augsburg) is a former Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint Ulrich and Saint Afra in the south of the old city in Augsburg, Bavaria. From the late 16th century onward, the Abbey of St. Ulrich and St Afra was one of the 40-odd self-ruling imperial abbeys of the Holy Roman Empire and, as such, was a virtually independent state. The territory of that state was very fragmented: the abbey of St. Ulrich and St Afra proper enclaved within the Free Imperial City of Augsburg, and several small territories disseminated throughout the region. At the time of its dissolution in 1802, the Imperial Abbey covered 112 square kilometers and had about 5,000 subjects.

The Goldener Saal (Golden Hall) is a ceremonial room in the 3rd floor of Augsburg Town Hall, which is famous for its ceiling paintings, murals, and golden wall decoration. It was finished in 1643 and is one of the most important cultural monuments of the late Renaissance. The room was built after plans by Elias Holl. In 1944, the Town Hall and the Goldener Saal were destroyed by an air raid and were reconstructed in 1996.

The Town Hall of Augsburg (German: Augsburger Rathaus) is the administrative centre of Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany, and one of the most significant secular buildings of the Renaissance style north of the Alps. It was designed and built by Elias Holl, Stadtbaumeister (Master Builder of the town), in 1615–1624. Due to its historic and cultural importance, it is protected by the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
