Dumfries and Galloway College is a further education college in Dumfries and Galloway, with campuses in Dumfries and Stranraer. Founded in 1961, the college has flourished to become a leading voice in green energy skills development to help tackle climate change and one of the main providers of learning and training across the South of Scotland. The college offers programmes ranging from senior-phase school partnerships to higher education, with a range of courses, including business, computing, care, childcare, construction, creative industries, education, engineering, hairdressing, beauty and complementary therapies, health and social studies, hospitality and sports and recreation. In 2008 their campus moved from Heathhall to its new main campus on the Crichton Estate, sitting nearby the University of Glasgow's and the University of the West of Scotland's satellite faculties in Dumfries. The college was recognised at the 2021 Green Gown Awards, winning the accolade of the UK and Ireland's Sustainability Institution of the Year award for 2020 and it regularly boasts of high student satisfaction rates - 97% among further education students and 94% among higher education students in the most recent 2018-19 Student Satisfaction and Engagement survey conducted by the Scottish Funding Council. This places Dumfries and Galloway College in the top 5 institutions in Scotland for student satisfaction.

Midpark Hospital is a modern acute mental health unit located in Dumfries. The hospital is managed by NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

The Crichton is an institutional campus in Dumfries in southwest Scotland. It serves as a remote campus for the University of Glasgow, the University of the West of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway College, and the Open University. The site also includes a hotel and conference centre, and Crichton Memorial Church, set in a 100-acre (40 ha) park. The campus was established in the 19th century as the Crichton Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital.

Dumfries Castle was a royal castle that was located in Dumfries, Scotland. It was sited by the River Nith, in the area now known as Castledykes Park.A motte and bailey castle was built in the 12th century. The town was created a royal burgh by King William the Lion in 1186. The castle was enlarged and rebuilt in stone in 1214. King Alexander III of Scotland visited the castle in 1264 to plan an expedition against the Isle of Man. Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale captured the castle in 1286. The castle was occupied by the English from 1298. King Edward I of England stayed at the castle in 1300. Robert de Brus captured the castle briefly in 1306 from the English-appointed constable Richard Siward. King Robert I of Scotland captured the castle on 7 February 1313 from the English appointed constable, his enemy Dungal Macdouall, who had turned King Robert's brothers, Thomas and Alexander, over to Edward I, who promptly executed them. According to the RCAHMS there is "a strong belief" that it was destroyed after the capture and never rebuilt.

St Joseph's College in Dumfries, South West Scotland, is a Roman Catholic secondary school. It began as a Catholic boys' boarding school run by Marist Brothers.

Dumfries High School is situated in a residential area of Marchmount in Dumfries, Scotland. It has been on this site since 1961, and has been expanded and improved since. It is adjacent to the David Keswick Athletic Centre, which provides sporting facilities both for the school and the local community. It is one of Dumfries' 4 high schools. The headteacher of Dumfries High School is Philip Cubbon.

The Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum is a volunteer-operated aviation museum located in and around the World War II-era watch tower (control tower) at the former RAF Dumfries, located two miles north east of the centre of Dumfries, Scotland, which was in service from June 1940 until 1957, when it closed. The site was sold to a private company in 1960. The museum, founded in 1977 by the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Group, has a collection of aircraft, both civil and military, aero engines, artifacts, and a small, but "ever expanding collection of memorabilia honouring airborne forces."

Troqueer is a former village and a parish in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway on the west side of the River Nith. The eastern-side was merged with Dumfries to the east in 1929, and today eastern Troqueer is a suburb of Dumfries.

Dumfries ( (listen) dum-FREESS; Scots: Dumfries; from Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Phris [ˌt̪un ˈfɾʲiʃ]) is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. It is located near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth about 25 miles (40 km) by road from the Anglo-Scottish border and just 15 miles (24 km) away from Cumbria by air. Dumfries is the county town of the historic county of Dumfriesshire.Before becoming King of Scots, Robert the Bruce killed his rival the Red Comyn at Greyfriars Kirk in the town on 10 February 1306. The Young Pretender had his headquarters here during a 3-day sojourn in Dumfries towards the end of 1745. During the Second World War, the bulk of the Norwegian Army during their years in exile in Britain consisted of a brigade in Dumfries. Dumfries is nicknamed Queen of the South. This is also the name of the town's professional football club. People from Dumfries are known colloquially in Scots language as Doonhamers.

Royal Air Force Dumfries or more simply RAF Dumfries was a former Royal Air Force station located near Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway Scotland. The airfield opened on 17 June 1940 and was sold in 1960 to a private firm. The disused airfield is now used as the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum.

Auchen Castle is a wedding destination near Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. With 26 bedrooms, a private lake and falconry school, it has a 5-star rating by the Scottish tourist board. The castle has hosted celebrity guests such as the Beatles, Barbara Cartland, Margaret Thatcher and the King of Norway, and is a wedding venue which has attracted several celebrity weddings in recent years.

Lochar Thistle Football Club are a football club originating in 1969 from the villages of Locharbriggs and Heathhall in the town of Dumfries in Scotland. They originally competed in the Dumfries & District Amateur Football League where they were First Division Champions on three occasions. The club also went on a record 42 game unbeaten League run between 2010 and 2012. They joined the South of Scotland Football League for the 2013–14 season. They play their home games at Maxwelltown High School which accommodates approximately 1,000 spectators. The club was accredited in December 2015 with the Standard Level Quality Mark from the SFA. The club have won The Potts Cup in 2015–16 season and were also the first winners of the Alba Cup in the 2016–17 season. In 2009, 80 year old club stalwart, George Kirk was awarded Volunteer of the Year in Amateur football.
